  • Here is where we go over some of the materials we can use, and also the physics of what goes on inside an enclosed air column when you excite the air within with vibration. The correct bore-to-bore-diameter ratio for a basic transverse flute is also covered here.
    Today's blog post which is mentioned in this video is here; rockfreakinsoli...

    Finally I found you again in the back of my mind. I wanted to tell you how you helped me into making and playing my own flutes during a time in which didn’t have anything except for a house, food and much more time on my mind than I could handle. Now I am several years and some 25 flutes further and some fine bamboo is waiting to be crafted into music. You brought me a lot of calm and joy over the years and a very healthy admiration for tubes. Last flute I made was g major in green fish tank acrylic. Thank you for that.

      Hello from Nagoya, Japan! This is me, Rockfreakinsolid, via my other YT username... I'm very happy to see your comment! I've been working hard these last few months to resurrect this old channel of mine - hopefully very soon, I'll be posting again... I've spent years learning many more instruments, woodwinds, strings, percussion, as well as experimental - there will be tons more content... I hope to provide good things for musicians, makers, woodworkers, teachers of math, science, music, art - and all the homeschoolers out there, as well as those who wish to earn a living making musical instruments of various types. I hope this reply finds you and yours being well, safe, and living a good life! Again, Thank You ❤😊❤

    I played flute and Recorder for years and never gave it a thought about its complicated physical make up, and science involved. Thanks for taking out of your time and explaining it in such intersting manner. Funny too! PVC? I used PVC to plumb my Koi pond, never occured to me I could use it as a flute. I stumbled here accidently, now I am glad I did. I have better appreciation of my instruments.

    I can see how practicing on pvc makes a lot of sense- but when I figure it out, I'm definitely going to use wood. That's something I've got plenty of in the pacific northwest- bamboo grows like a weed here, there's no end of it. I'm enjoying your videos, I'll probably watch them all...very explanatory for someone like myself who hasn't studied music but wants to learn. And you have ridiculously good hair;-)

    During my last 4 yr. prison bid for marijuana cultivation, i made side hole flutes out of paper and toothpaste. It was a very productive hustle. Had the place lit up.tuning didn't matter. The idea stuck with me to make some out of bamboo. Very informative. Figured out how long to make the flutes from bamboo a Rasta friend gave me. Now I shall seek where the holes like to be placed. Nice to have found you

    I got that wrong. Start with no holes, then make the lowest hole and get it tuned how you want it, then work your way up.
    All the holes below the hole you're tuning have an effect on it, so do them from the low end up. If you start by making the top hole right for the note, it will keep getting higher as you make the holes below it.

    What would be your advice, if I want to use an external pump like a bicycle pump or whatever rather than my mouth to blow the air into the flute? That way it becomes possible to sing and play the flute + (hopefully dance as well) at the same time?

    However, it may make more sense to make a D flute (trad Irish), since it only has six holes. The fingerings are then the same a a C flute, apart from the F and F# - you get an F# with your left hand holes closed and your first right hand hole closed, and you need to flatten it to get the F. The other notes will be more what you're used to though - first finger hole closed for a B, all holes open for a C#, and play the C like on a sax (second hole closed, first open) - no C at the bottom, just D

    You'd play the F# as a flattened G - finger for a G, leave at least one hole below that open, then close at least one hole below that. E.g XXOXOO or XXOOXO or even XXOOXX, whichever sounds closest. See my other comment though - fingerings on a 6 hole C flute are a bit weird. A 6 hole D would be easier to learn to play, for a concert C flute player.

    How would you produce the note of f# on your flute if it is tuned to the key of c?Also, how do you know how long to make the flute? What note do you tune it to to get the final length? I know how to find the positioning of each of the notes, but how do you find the length of the tube? I have checked all of your videos and your website and have found no luck. If you could answer these questions I would be immensely great full. Thank-you so much!

    @rockfreakinsolid embouchure? Not sure if you call it the same thing as when playing harmonica? I'm fascinated by this since I love Native American flute music - but I'd rather be able to buy a cedar flute. I just don't have the tools or skills to build one. Love the idea, though - since I do other DIY hobbies/crafts.

    The length is from the inside of the cork or stopper to the end of the pipe? How do you decide where to place the embouchure hole? (Blow hole, if you like :))

    • @VinlandAlchemist
      @VinlandAlchemist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make the embouchure hole's center point be one bore diameter's distance from the plug wall (inside), and make the embouchure hole no more than a half bore diameter wide. Sorry it took so long to reply (long story... deaths in the family, divorce/custody battle, immigration office issues here in Japan, etc.) - it's me, the guy in this video - typing via my other TH-cam account. I'll be resurrecting this channel (Rockfreakinsolid) soon.

When I measure the length is that end to end? You talk about how the vibration starts but not about the angel of the hole. I got the mouth hole but not sure Well as you said it is just pvc Ill do math for a c and cut it end to end
