Excellent experiment. I'm glad you did this even if it hadn't worked. I wouldn't suspect it to work very well either but it's a fair question. And it worked a bit so that's nice.
I use hot glue a lot and in pretty large quantities and I think switching to the lower temperatures is definitely what made the second attempt succeed. The higher the temperature and the longer it's hot the more glue like it gets.
Oh and a small tip. If you want hot glue to settle faster all you need to do is cool it off. You can set the workpiece on something that will transfer the heat. throw it in the fridge, or even just blow on it. If I can touch the workpiece without touching the glue I'll even just use my hand to sap away the heat. Hot glue doesn't really hold on to its heat. Those first molds only took a long time because they were big globs. But do anything to them, like even just moving them around the desk away from the spot they just made warm and it will dissipate a lot quicker.

release agent on your master. and it popped right off of your silicone dish, because the only thing that sticks to silicone it silicone. vaseline brushed on would not leave a texture on the master . could have added more glue to the wobble one, to make a flatter base.

Would be great for historical 28mm scale round shields

you problbly figure it out, but you dont put oil on the piece you want to copy, you put on the edges of the hot glue you want to make the piece, either in the surface, or if a two part mold in the previously dry hot glue, but not on the piece.

Well if you use resin that heats up it will just remelt the glue stick so 🤷‍♀️ that doesn't make sense... I use hot glue in silicone molds to make copies of whatever the silicone mold negative is. That works.
