This show is wonderful! Right now we are aiming on uploading two episodes of Frieren per week (not in 50 year increments), on Tuesdays and Fridays (Frieren Fridays 😎). Welcome aboard as we see what lies beyond the journey's end!
A Taiwanese man helped stop a knife attack on the Taichung metro because his anime hero, Himmel from Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, "would've done the same."
I read in a reddit threat, so there is doubt, from a japanese teacher that kids are using a phrase that translates to "Himmel logic", to describe why they did a nice thing.
You're in for a treat. I don't usually rewatch shows, but I'm on my 3rd rewatch today. I put it on in the background while doing housework because it's become such a comfort show for me
The pacing too. It never felt rushed at all, and it really lets you take time to digest each character. It's a fantasy show heavy with a lot of action, but most of the time it really just feels like a slice of life anime and I'm so so in love with that.
@@zavs350 Yeah. Just the right amount of world-building, character development and action to keep you interested and hungry for more. Wanted a season 2 15 seconds after episode 28 ended.
welcome to the anime of the year, the storytelling, characters, animation, music. I rushed to the links to see if you guys had a Patreon that was ahead so I could binge!
Being a big fan of reaction channels myself, I feel you on that lol. Patreon is definitely a goal once we get into a good rhythm of recording and editing! Thank you for the comment, reading stuff like that is very motivating.
Just found your channel through FMAB, and now you're watching Frieren! Excited to see your reactions. A little tidbit of trivia, all the names in this show are German words, these are the meanings of the ones we've seen so far. Frieren - Cold/freezing Himmel - Heaven/Sky Eisen - Iron Heiter - Cheerful Fern - Distant Flamme - Flame Ewig - Eternal
So a fun note I don’t think many think about but Frieren’s comment about the meteor shower is actually incredibly deft from the writer. “The views not very good from here” and “I know somewhere you can see them better.” On a surface many just see this as touching on how long she will live compared to them and setting up the future moments but it is also a reflection of how long she has already lived. This meteor shower that happens every 50 years for most people is something most will probably only see once, maybe twice if they are lucky. But by Frieren’s comments not only has she seen them multiple times but she’s seen them enough times to have started considering it in terms of where the best view is. Not the type of thing people would tend to think about seeing them even 2-3 times hinting that she has seen this once every fifty years occurrence many times. Just really layered writing with the author managing to plan out a moment to where it showcases far more than just what it has to.
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Sousou no Frieren! I hope you really enjoy this anime series! A lot of modern Japanese fantasy is tailored after the Lord of the Rings. Frieren is very Tokeinesque, so Elves are nearly immortal, Dwarves live a few hundred years and humans 70-90 years. Just a few things if no one else has mentioned it; this anime is really about paying attention to little details, as small things make emotional impacts later in series. For instance, the reason why Frieren buys a hair clip in Episode 3 that had a butterfly design was because in Episode 2 the first time Fern showed Heiter her magic, she made an illusion of glowing butterflies. You DO learn why Frieren has a habit of collecting spells, and it all starts with her master, who is revealed in Episode 4 and you learn way more about her in the penultimate mid-season episode 10. There is speculation that since Priests are the only ones who can effectively use holy magic (dispelling and resisting curses, casting holy affinity offensive magic, blessings and healing) that they are also granted longer lives than normal. Some people even say that Heiter passed away when he was over 100. Every name in Frieren is a German word and they have meaning. There is a school of thought that this whole story is Frieren's reminiscence, since people are named for concepts that encapsulates a memory/impression, rather than normal German names. Frieren - Freezing - it's speculated that Frieren's emotional state was frozen by tragedy revealed in Episode 10, and that her master was instrumental in thawing her, culminating in meeting with her friends. Another interpretation is that Frieren's relational state was frozen, an her time with Fern will continue the change in her that her time with Himmel did. Himmel - Sky or Heaven - pay attention to the times they show the Sky, as it almost always refers to Himmel or the memory of him Heiter - Jolly - Heiter is shown in future flashbacks as deflecting difficult emotional stress with humour or self-deprecation. Eisen - Iron - a great name for one of the strongest warriors in history Fern - Remote or distant Stark - Strong Flamme - Flame - The founder of Human Magic, Frieren's human Master. Potentially named for the Promethean legend, the giant who taught the gift of fire to humans (technology & civilization) in Greek mythology, but also for setting Frieren on the path to thawing her heart. Qual - Torment Aura - Aura Lügner - Liar Linie - Line, as in production, watch the way she summons things Draht - Wire Graf Garnat - Count Garnet - the stone that is part of the family amulet is a red garnet. Kraft - Power, Strength Sein - Being or Existence Kanne - Container or pot Lawine - Avalanche Wirbel - Whirl or Vortex Übel - Evil or Villain Denken - Thinking Land - Country Richter - a reference to the founder of hte Richter Scale, the measure of earthquake intensity Laufen - Runner Ehre - Honor or Glory Scharf - Sharp Sense - Scythe Genau - Exactly or Precisely Falsch - Wrong or Mistaken Lernen - Learn Edel - Noble Blei - Lead the metal Dünste - Steamy or hazy Ton - Sound or Tone Länge - Length of time or duration Methode - Method Serie - Series, as in items in a group (a book series, for example) - obvious, given her encyclopedic memory and her offer of "privilege." Notice that the way time is marked in the anime is based on Himmel's death (such as "20 years after the Death of Himmel the Hero.") It's not certain if this is universal or how Frieren marks her time. Frieren recently toppled FullMetal Alchemist from the top spot on MyAnimeList (MAL), where it had sat for more than a decade. Both are Shonen manga that start with loss. Both are praised for excellent characterization, complex and nuanced issues, delicate handling of plot, emotional intensity and touching sentimentalism. Lastly, the series is named "Sousou no Frieren." While this has often been translated as "Frieren The Slayer" that is INCORRECT. "Sousou no" is the act of "sending off" as in a funeral. So while the manga title may be translated as "Frieren, the Final Farewell to the Dead" since that's more literary, the more precise translation is "Frieren the Undertaker." This has more than one meaning, but the two most common interpretations is that we learn that Elves in Frieren are essentially immortal, so Frieren will eventually "send off" all her non-elven friends. The second meaning is to "see someone off" is also a euphemism for killing and is Frieren is first identified by a demon as the titular character in Episode 8.
Hope your Frieren journey continues to the end! The first 4 episodes were released as a single "pilot" or "prologue" and it makes sense by the end of episode 4.
I find it interesting how you can actually be put in Frieren's shoes here. You can get attached to these characters so quickly and grieve when their gone even though it's just a "Mere first episode"
I'm glad to see you both watching _Frieren_ as your next choice of an anime to react to, and I'm looking forward to following your videos closely to reexperience the joy and majesty of watching this incredible series again with you both. Kim is right in that it will tug at the heartstrings, but while the first episode is quite sad, the future ones are probably more aptly described as bittersweet with moments of melancholy, so I think it's safe to say that it's not going to be the tearfest that she's worried it might become, and I'll leave it at that. At a high level, the story really shines in how it includes rare and unique themes of long-term thinking, along with how small forces or ideas can bloom into larger consequences, and then interweaves those with more familiar concepts like history repeating itself, the meaning of friendship, feelings of regret, and more. The show is at its best when it gives you stories that show you - in even the smallest detail of the setting or the simplest of actions by the characters - the overwhelming weight of the slow, inexorable passage of time. You're in for a rare and special treat with _Frieren_ I think.
Very well said. We are only two episodes in so far, but we can already see how having an ageless protagonist like Frieren can let the show do so many interesting things with the theme of time and its effects. We are really looking forward to watching more.
Alright, a new Frieren reaction series! I've probably seen this first episode 25 times now and I still cry every. single. time. Looking forward to seeing what you think of the show and getting to know the two of you in that weird parasocial way that happens when you watch people watch TV. 😅
Hope you have fun with this one! hard not to. Also there's another elf roaming around called Marcille that looks a bit like one of you. Worth a shot as well.
Every name in this show is German. For better understanding you can just put the names in a translator. For example frieren meaning frozen, to be cold. Himmel meaning heaven, sky. Eisen meaning iron. Fern meaning far away.
I am angry that you just uploaded this today and I can't just move on to the next episode with you. I like to binge my reaction videos the same way I binge everything else.

Actual from lisbon to beijing as a round trip is 304 days walking without pause. So the 10 year roundtrip is on a really huge continent. This anime is better than peak. Small funfact of Priest: Actually the priest are the ones, in the middle-age, that brew the first time beer (but the Egyptians invented this) The oldest brewery of beer that still work till today is the Weihenstephan Brewery near Munich. over 1000 years. "Get that man a Guilette razer", i can hear Gimli saying NOT THE BEARD. here also a funfact about Heiter and Himmel. We German using the word HEITER also for describing the (weather and sky) Himmel, when the weather is nice and clear without clouds. That could probably also a deep connection of Heiter and Himmel. Theres a lot of double and triple meaning in all of the names used here. i guess that the ending is giving the vibe Frieren is singing about Himmel.
