Sliding Barn Door Hardware Made From Salvage Material

  • Today we make some rolling hardware for another set of sliding barn doors out of a combination of old wheels with a bit of history and some salvaged pipe hangers from a jobsite many years ago. So there's a little metal lathe work with a Jet lathe, a little welding with a Snap-On welder AND a little milling on an old Bridgeport. A quick and simple job to get done as long as you have a little patience. Yes, you can just order a sliding door hardware kit from Amazon, but what fun is that when you can make a heavier set up with some salvaged materials.
The old furniture company closed up probably 80 years ago or more and my grandfather managed to salvage a lot of pattern making tools at that time. He got a huge bandsaw for the blacksmith shop and a patternmakers lathe that topped 15' in overall length and rested for the next 50 years in the old well house on the farm. There were large carts and dollies for the docks and smallerr machines for production that rolled on these little wheels. My Much Older Brother has had these wheels in his possession since he was a little boy in the 1940's. #slidingdoors, #diy, #salvagematerials

My word Mr Wendell, you are a true craftsman!! Those turned out absolutely amazing!!! I have to admit, I have found many uses over the years for those pipe clamps, but never anything that creative!! I can't wait to see the next step and the track!! Thank you sir for bringing us along!! 😁😁👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸

Nice to see that there are still people left that care about decorative parts of barn doors. For sure they will look really nice. Great job!

Thats well done and saved a bit of money. That hardware is getting real expensive. I did a door at the camp a few years ago and it cost some good coin. It pays to save up a lot of stuff....CHEERS

Good looking project. The way I understand it, to machine that UHMW, use very sharp tools to get the best results. It looks like you do OK.

It trims up pretty good but I like to 'fine tune' it a file though. I just ground a HHS cutter to a 60* and ran with it. It works really good for drawer slides.

I got that one at Northern Tool at least 20 years ago. I don't know if they have the same one anymore at all. I have it anchored to the concrete. When not in use I just remove the bolts and push it to the corner. The flush anchors stay in the floor.
