Thanks for this upload!! I was all but 10 years old when this game went down. My birthday was a couple of weeks before this game and my parents got me a subscription to Sports Illustrated. I don't remember what I had for breakfast today, but those first few issues of SI I got, the covers to this day are seared into my head. I can still see the cover when K State beat OSU in the tourney!! Anyway, thanks for the post as I really never watched this team play.
Was he any good in the NBA, I don't recall hearing his name in the NBA that much at all. Must have flown under my radar, I guess I followed too umch of Sampson
He had a mediocre 10 year career averaging 11 pts & 5 rebs per game. Johnson was an oddity who was a great fg percentage shooter but was only a career 63% ft shooter. He still may have the all time fg percentage in college.
NBC College Basketball Announce pairings 1981 National Games-Dick Enberg, Al McGuire, Billy Packer ECAC/Big East-Marv Albert, Bucky Waters SEC-John Ferguson, Joe Dean Big Ten-Bob Costas, Steve Grote Big Eight-Jay Randolph, Gary Thompson SWC-Frank Fallon, Rudy Davalos PAC 10-Barry Tompkins, Lynn Shackelford
Did anyone have a Broadcasting gig for The Western Athletic Conference? Danny Ainge and Alton Lister to name just two were big Hoops stars at the time.🤔🎤🏀B.W.
@@chrismalloy7960 They must have been a pretty high seed in the tournament that year. I was real young in '81, and don't recall much about that year's tourney, except that President Reagan got shot on the day of the championship game between Indiana and NC.
They were upset in the first round that year IIRC by a Lamar Cardinals team from Beaumont. The Lamar Coach was Billy Tubbs, a Jack Nicholson lookalike who guided The Oklahoma Sooners later on to a National Championship game against Kansas. Oddly enough, that Jayhawk team starring Danny Manning was Coached by former UCLA Coach Larry Brown!😂😏🎤🐻🏀B.W.
Billy Packer and Al McGuire were in Lexington, Kentucky that day calling the Kentucky/LSU game with Bob Costas. The gentleman calling the game with Dick Enberg, Gary Thompson played his basketball at Iowa State, called the Saturday Big Eight Game of the Week on NBC with Jay Randolph and called some split national games with Don Criqui as well.
UCLA had been in previous NCAA Final Four. Lost Championship Game to Louisville. Kiki VanDeWeghe. Larry Brown. Went on to coach Danny and Miracles at Kansas.
Your collection and recent uploads from 1981 are amazing. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any NCAA tournament games from 1981? Ie. Oregon State vs. Kansas State? Happy Thanksgiving
Thanks. I just added a batch of games from that era but no NCAA tournament games are among them. It looks like there is a 1981 Oregon State vs USC game so I will post that at some point down the line. Enjoy the holiday!
It made no difference if Oregon State and DePaul had made it to the final four because neither team would've come close to beating my Hoosiers. IU found their rhythm just in time for the tournament and steamrolled everyone. Besides the UCLA teams under Wooden, it was rare for a team to dominate each game in the tournament.
I've posted a couple of Marquette games from the 1980's but I don't have any broadcasts of them from the 1970's. One of my uploads "1970 Converse basketball review" does open with good footage of the Warriors winning the NIT vs St. John's at MSG.
I'm sorry I don't. If you are a UCLA fan hopefully you have, or will check out, the extensive uploads I recently added of the Bruins 1980 NCAA tournament run.
The resolution of the picture on this video couldn't be worse, if a coke bottle had been used for a lens. And what a deal, you not only have to dodge the commercials from the original program, but also those that TH-cam puts up.
@stevemcdonald1033 Congratulations! This upload has had over 15,000 views and you are the first one to complain. It actually is a good deal though because no one forced you to watch any of it and you don't have to watch any of the other non HD quality forty plus year old college basketball broadcasts that have been posted.
Cry harder waww touch the doll and tell us where the HD hurt you. Most people back then had to listen to this game on the Radio N btw I did was out cutting firewood w my dad I was 14
I always loved Ralph Miller's passing-driven game. Great coach, and a fine teacher of the fundamentals of motion and passing.
Pauley was rocking like you wouldn’t see nowadays.
My nostalgia meter just blew up
That's what this channel is all about. "Welcome back to yesteryear!"
old pauley pavillion ....very under rated atmopshere. It got really loud back then

No three point line, no shot clock to bail out the defense....beautiful

@@madbrowniac7871 I believe it was Larry Zimmer and Irv Brown
NBC played that Kenny Loggins song for the NCAA tournament, I think it was "This is it make no stay where you are"
Don sawyer legendary public address announcer st Pauley loved his work
Go Beavs!!
Wow. Oregon State was the #1 team in the country in March of 1981? Did not know that and would not have guessed it.
They were legit for for about a three year span. Had a great run in the 80s and early 90s.
81 team was loaded. They lost Johnson to the draft, but AC Green was a freshman the next season.

This was a Final Four team 100%. The fact that they lost early in the NCAA Tournament when they did is confounding to me.

What a team UCLA was in the 60’s and 70,s. It’s been a while since the Bruins were on top.
thank you, great upload!
Glad you enjoyed it
This team was such a downer in the tourney. The lost their last reg game and then laid an egg in their yourney opener.
March 1, 1981
Michael Holton is now the Blazers’ color man on radio.
This is only one of a few times that Enberg worked a nbc game
with a partner that wasn't Billy Packer or Al McGuire.

Ehh? Looking to relive that Rolando Blackman shot at the buzzer?
@@browburk Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrgggghhhh 😩
I went to Jr High and High School with Darren Daye. Played ball with him many times
This UCLA team is stacked if Larry Brown stayed he would have won another national title
Love this!! My God the officiating back then...If you breathed on someone it was a foul.
I like to play these games @ 2x so I can get a feel for how they used to play sports in the silent film era.
3:10 Gary Thompson's hair!
Hurricane proof...
Lester Connor and Steve Johnson of Oregon State had long NBA careers
Oregon State lost their first game of NCAA Tournament to #8 Kansas State , Rolando Blackman, 50-48.
Here at Pauley Pavilion.

Larry Brown did leave UCLA after the 1981 season btw
Larry Brown, to me, kinda started the era where coaches changed jobs like they changed their shorts.
I think it was this 1981 season where Darren Daye did a reverse dunk and Larry Brown was yelling at him for show boating. 😂
I guess Brown got fed up.
I hope y'all will reply to this it was odd to see Larry Brown without glasses
Johnson 12 dribbles before a free throw.
The Bruin band--none better.
Awesome, do u have UCLA vs Indiana NIT Championship game
I'm sorry I don't. If you are a UCLA fan hopefully you have, or will check out, the extensive uploads I recently added of the Bruins 1980 NCAA tournament run.
The color analyst Gary Thompson was either wearing a helmet on his head or that was the worst toupee since Hank Stram in SB IV.
UCLA was small at center giving Johnson grub hub
Oregon State would lose on this same floor in the NCAA tournament in about two weeks.
A lot of these guys fly into the lane with no apparent goal other than to create contact and hope for a foul.
Mark Eaton
Indiana won it all that year. YEAA
