Kalandra is by far my favourite band of the year 2020 and 2021. They have given me goosebumps. They have brought me to tears. They have just forced me to fall in love with them and have my hostage with every track. Especially covering Helvegen.
I love this band so much and I love seeing them being appreciated. I found them through their song Virkelighetens Etterklang - one of their very few songs in Norwegian. (I adore the fact that they even have any songs in non-English). And the language somehow adds even more to the atmosphere and feeling of their music. It works amazingly.
You can't go wrong with anything from Kalandra. I absolutely love them. Lullaby (Live from Storas, Norway) is a great showcase of the band. It's an awesome performance and Katrine is an absolute powerhouse. Falling in love with this band and Katrine's amazing voice has been the best thing about 2020.
Thanks, Adam. Glad you liked the song, too. 😁 As for recommendations, I’m still absorbing their new album, but: • Helvegen (Kalandra cover) • Brave New World (Lyric Video or Live) • Virkelighetens Etterklang (Official music video or live) • Slow Motion (Official Music Video) • Sell Your Voice • Concrete Landscapes (Official video) • Not Some Fairytale • Lullaby (Live) • Across The Sea (Live) From this little old list I’ve never mentioned. 😅
I had exactly the same reaction and thank you for not keep stopping and talking softy over the music, this is one amazing song to be soaked up in silence
She reminds me so much of Aurora as well but with the added voices of the men reminded me of Wardruna. As you said…. Aurora and her having a duet would be MAGIC!
When I first heard this song, it reminded me of the banished royal siblings in the novel "A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula Le Guin. Ged, the book's protagonist, was stranded in a small island after having been attacked by a shadow creature. He was rescued by an elderly brother and sister who were once a prince and princess in a faraway kingdom to the north. When their uncle killed their father and took the throne, he could not bring himself to kill his young nephew and infant niece. Instead, he had the children sent to this tiny and remote island to die there. By some miracle, the two managed to survive and grow into old age. The two siblings were mostly forgotten by the world by the time young Ged arrived. He can talk to the older brother since the latter could communicate to a certain degree due to his limited vocabulary. He was the one who told Ged their sad story. The woman, on the other hand, never learned to talk and would often blush whenever Ged was around since he is the first man she had seen in her entire life, other than her older brother. She could only look longingly at him and then run to a corner of the cave to hide. For some reason, Ged both terrified and fascinated her. When Ged was finally able to build a small boat, he offered to take two to any place they wished to go. They kindly rejected his offer, fearing the outside world in their child-like minds. So Ged cast a spell that created a spring that produced fresh water and made sure that the two would have no trouble fishing or looking for clams. He then left the island and never saw the two ever again. This particular part of the story stayed with me and I sometimes wonder what became of the elderly brother and sister. As far as I know the two were never mentioned again in the "A Wizard of Earthsea" books. Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded of them.
Thank you so much for this reaction Adam ❤ Beautiful ❤ Read the article "Meet Kalandra, a Nordic folk infused alternativ rock band" on Music Norway for an interview for more information ❤
@@AdamStraughan Speaking of how you love vocalization ... A recommendation for another great group of artists: SKÁLD - Fimbulvetr I guess you may like it.
There is nothing to add 😊. I am of your opinion. Her voice is not from earth 🙈. Have goosebumps too 😍🥰. I love it so much. Thank you for your reaction video and your impressions.
Yes they sound similar ... of Kalandra this is my favorite .. to me it shows the foolish people who left and abandoned the gods. Yet the gods never left them.. you can still feel them in everything.. the black sand, the sea, the mountains and the forests are where the heartbeat of the gods remains and to me this illustrates this perfectly. The 2 in the water visualizes the struggle to return to the safety and comfort of what xtianity represents even though it'll drown you. To find peace you stay with the gods, the ancestors and you're true kin even though it is uncomfortable and puts you on the borders, that's where they reside and that's where you will find them if you look to the borders of safety and become truly alive... Kalandra truly are the Skälds the world needs and Ragnarok films captures it all in amazing fashion
The best way you can describe it is it’s like her voice is a combination of Emilie Nicholas’ oscillation and the softness of Aurora’s voice. Norway really sounds melancholy. Are they okay?
I know that many many people think Aurora and Katrine's voice are similar, I find them a lot different. Anyone else feels the same way? Its like saying porcupine tree sound like Pink Floyd.
For more Kalandra and the talented Katrine, check out Virkelighetens Etterklang from Auerbach, Germany and Brave New World from Kulturkirken Jakob. The first is in Norwegian and would absolutely be worth having the lyrics handy while you listen to add that extra beautiful depth and Brave New World is simply an amazing song that both hauntingly and superbly encapsulates the novel, Brave New World. Great channel, by the way. Keep up the good work :)
"Not some fairytale" could also be recommended. Well directed video. Thank you for this one. Dont think Katrine and Aurora sounds similar -is it just me?
No, not just you. Katrine has a stunningly beautiful voice but in my opinion Aurora has something more. I love the way Aurora uses her voice, the nuances and the quirkiness adds to the beauty I think. Katrine’s voice I’m not that familiar with yet since I stumblet upon Kalandra for the first time only a few weeks ago. Her voice has its own qualities don’t know how to pinpoint it. I’m really looking forward to listening more to Kalandra!
@@elsemargrethetnder883 Agree A's got more nuances, but it's the very approach to their music. Kalandra's got more "right-ahead"-attitude in both lyrics and music. I guess I just don't want to compare -they're great, altogether.
Aurora sometimes employs this genre but not always, but overall her singing style and pronounciation (both being norwegian) is very similar to Katrine's. I see others here like Aurora more. defo disagree, I like both of them, but i prefer Kalandra.
Ok too late, just wanted to suggest to you to react to this one. Here you see Kat and her band members. First and new album out today. Did you watch their Helvegen cover video.
@@AdamStraughan I guess you will love it. At the moment I envy the people in Norway which could get a ticket for Kalandra's live show in Oslo on October 30 (sold out). I'm not sure I would say that AURORA's and Katrine's voice are similar (claiming, if they both would sing the same song, of each other, I could tell who was who), however, they both have voices and vocal capabilities to tell stories and easily create emotions and I could imagine that they pretty well could interpret each others songs. Also they're both multi-talented, doing singing, writing, composing, arranging and what else. I discovered Kalandra shortly after they released their 'Helvegen' cover a bit more than a year ago and I instantly fell in love with them.
Please check out Brave New World by Kalandra if you haven’t already. Soooo good. Also, Einar from Wardruna did a collab with a group called Anilah which I think you’d really dig.

Kalandra has a cover of Wardruna's Helvegen, which is insanely awesome, you should check out this, it's also played live.
Yes, Katrines voice made me think about Aurora, but she has her own style that make her stand out so wonderfully.
i like katrines voice more, although i love both

Kalandra has actually also made a cover of Wardruna's "Helvegen", which I highly recommend giving a listen to
im really enjoying this journey, who knew i had to go via newcastle to discover a band from home
Haha love this :)
We should get back the ferry between Newcastle and Bergen.
Same here, if I hadn't found Adam I've never found Kalandra!
Katrine has a cleaner high tone than Aurora
