So so underrated. What I don’t get is how Marvel fans will hate this movie and then go on and on about how great Tony’s character development is and that’s why his death has so much weight when so much of that development comes from this film
It literally gets the same hate that TLJ got for pretty much the same reason. “The main character is a coward now...it goes against established lore and character points!” They’re human and they’ve been through a lot, some of which was caused by their own ego and fears. They can have a mental breakdown that changes their response to triggers. Luke put himself into exile and Tony gave a terrorist his home address. Luke can’t bring himself to face his mistakes and Tony literally suits up after a conversation with a child about his past trauma. I did not like this movie when it came out because the internet convinced me that it was terrible...years later I revisted it and I think that it’s deeper than most of the MCU films. Hopefully both get the same second chance from the fans to really explore what was presented in both films
I love Aaron, but 100% with Beau on this. The Mandarin is a brilliant move and Ben Kingsley plays both sides perfect. I think it'll round itself out when Shang-Chi finally comes out.
This movie is one of my favorites from the MCU. My wife watches her cheesy Christmas movies at the end of every year and I watch die hard and iron man 3. The movie is underrated and deserved another review. Thanks guys and keep up the great work.
@Don Shepard yeah the only ones that stand out are this one and evacuating Sokovia in Age of Ultron, otherwise it was a bit laughable that only 74 people died in the New York battle in the first Avengers
The movie itself is fine, good action and story. The problem is the twist. People don't like to be baited and switched and tbe trailers promised us one thing and we were delivered another. I thought Killian was a fine villian and in a movie about Aim I would've dug it. But this was like going to see the Dark Knight after the Joker had been hyped up in trailers and near the end of the movie the Joker goes to metropolis and Batman fights Killer croc instead. Even if that fight is good you feel a little robbed.
The climax of the film gave me blue balls. As a fan of some of the comics, it was awesome seeing all of these Iron Man suits. But he never really utilized them in the film. I get that it was focusing on the man in the suit, but I think a better balance could've been struck. And the fact that they were smashed apart with such ease shook my immersion as well. I definitely enjoyed the film, but the kid in me always wants these films to expand upon the awesome armor. If we can't have both though, I'll always settle for character development over flashy visuals.
Truly an underrated flick, to the point where it irritates me. The personal growth that Tony has to go through is wonderfully shown and it's not through some hammy over acted crap. The subtlety is perfect.
I really liked how it brought things back to earth after such a huge movie like the Avengers, and it shows how he wants to move on and ensure Earth is protected, hence his Ultron and Civil War arc. Mandarin wasn’t great but Tony’s story itself was great. Also how many villains did Tony unintentionally create? This film, the other two iron man films, homecoming, ultron, far from home, civil war, all due to Tony or his company
This movie is only hated because it messes with the "lore" and Mandarin isn't what he was in the comics. In fact it's a really entertaining and witty movie with awesome Iron Man action.
While I may not watch it often, *Iron Man 3* is one of my favorite *Marvel* films. IMO, it gives us a bit of what *Captain America Winter Soldier* does ~ it is less cookie-cutter in places, while still being an entertaining extension to the series. More importantly, it delves deeper into the character the way a solo movie should. We get elements which not only makes sense, but that we might not have seen otherwise.
Aaron’s point about the villain being a repeat from the first Iron Man is exactly why I hate the twist. In the first movie they set up the terrorist organize having ties to the 10 Rings which is tied to the Mandarin traditionally. It seemed like they were building the world and expanding on hints from the first movie, and then they farted all over it by saying he was just a drug addicted British actor. That’s why they had to walk to all back with the All Hail the King short
Glad you mentioned how the marketing played a role in the hate for the movie. People have to remember that it was marketed like this super serious movie with Kingsly playing what seemed like a really cool villain, so the fake out and tone on the movie in general was pretty jarring on first watch. I also enjoyed it a lot more years later when I watched it again.
Nah tbh it’s really good. We get the explore Tony’s mind a lot more and we get to see how he’s not just a guy in a can he can get out of situation using his mind and i love it
I'm not sure Teddy realizes how ironic his Tom Cruise comment was. Long before connected universes started to become the norm, Cruise often was trying to put together the first Iron Man film since like the mid 90s. As producer and of course star, but as with so many other Hollywood 'what ifs' it just never came together. Mind you once Marvel started to gather momentum as their own film studio with characters they still had by around 2005 Cruise was never part of the conversation at all to be involved.
What I am hoping they do is bring back Sir Ben Kingsly and reveal that he WAS the real mandarin the whole time and plays the actor to hide himself in plain sight.
I didn’t hate this movie, but I definitely saw it as more of a Shane Black film than a Marvel film. The voice over and ptsd is so derivative of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Lethal Weapon.
I have not watched a marvel movie in about 10 years, I'm just not into it and have no plans to watch any in the future. However I will watch the soup reviews cos soup. That is all.

Not only that the villain had an incredibly stupid origin story and was the same dork turned villain story from Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Spider man 3 and the Amazing Spider man
What bothers me about the movie isn't the mandarin twist itself, its that the replacement villain sucked and was just a boring rip off of syndrome from the Incredibles, who never once became an interesting character or a threatening, memorable villain. Even his powers aren't that cool towards the end in the direct one on one fight, since they made the mistake of giving him an army of henchmen with the same abilities, and its never established why he's any more powerful or any more of a threat to Tony than any of the other henchmen Tony has already defeated earlier in the movie

frankly they already did the closest they were ever likely to come to that in Iron Man 2, the paladium material more or less acted as its proxy. Something he was "self medicating" with that was making him feel better in the more immediate sense but ultimately it was doing way more harm, leading him to sort of spiral out in a blaze of self pity and lashing out (basically all that leads up to the Nick Fury diner scene). With Coulson coming to the house it was even sort of like an abbreviated version of him going into rehab.
Tony is really just the smartest idiot in the world. I'm happy you guys are doing these so I didn't have to rewatch the Iron Man movies. I really dislike RDJ's Tony Stark. Especially in Civil War. "Hey, I want all of you to pay for MY failures because I feel guilty for MY failures." In the first Avengers, New York was getting messed up whether or not the Avengers were there. The aliens were literally coming to destroy everything and were destroying everything. Age of Ultron and the deaths in Sokovia is entirely on Tony. He's the one who needs to be regulated.

I think the scene where iron man saves everyone from that falling airplane is one of the best scenes from any iron man movie.
