I'll repeat because I think it's super important. The small blenders in the US that use Sutliff tobaccos to blend their blends are in trouble. Country Squire uses all Sutliff tobacco...Boswells. The list is long. The owners of Mac Baren that decided they are more interested in real estate than tobacco have NO idea what they have just done.

It’s more than just the actual tobacco. Sutliff also helps with importing and distribution of tobacco for smaller companies. Also I’m not sure if STG could care less about what this does to the overall pipe tobacco market. That wasn’t their revenue.
Thanks for the news. I am Peterson/ they did not keep MacBaren Plumcake. Glad they are keeping the Dunhill/Peterson blends for the US market. My one Sutliff blend will be gone. Planning a move; so buying before 2/28 cellaring would not be ideal for me. Will just have to find a comparable C&D blend. Moving forward Happy New Year ! Happy puffing to all!
Let's face reality for a moment. I have been selling bulk blends in my retail stores since the 1970's and frankly, Sutliff grossly overextended its line of bulk tobaccos to the point where their bottom line must have suffered greatly. Macbaren is a little different situation where they were headed in the right direction where they probably got tired of hearing their basic blends being called "macbitey" blends for obvious reasons. When they introduced the HH series a few years ago many of us retailers rejoiced that Macbaren had finally got the message and starting producing flavorful blends which did not bite your tongue off. But too little too late, Both of these problems are a direct result of corporate decision making at its worst. Props to Cornell and Diehl who have the distinct advantage of being a smaller company who are still dedicated to producing a quality product. Hopefully they may pick up the SPC line which deserves a better fate than being just another item on the ash heap of the grossly overextended Sutliff bulk line of overextended SKUs

I wonder what will happen with blends like Cobblestone Hiking. It isn't made by Sutliff but it was imported by them. Would this be a case of finding a different importer and the distributor lines remain as is? All of this is a nightmare.

I know this will be felt for months, but I do think it will help some of the smaller companies to grow their lines. I picked up two blends yesterday, they had an open tin of one at my b and m. But yes it’s going to be a change for many pipe smokers
We shouldn't be sad, we should be angry. The right thing to do here is boycott STG, whether or not we think it'll get them to do the right thing. Give your money to businesses which don't hold their customers in such low regard. Gawith, G.L. Pease, Cornell & Diehl are all still options.

Just received two tins of Capstan Blue (flake) and tried it for the first time. Really enjoyed it. Enough that I went and found only one out of three online retailers on the East coast who I looked into who had any left in stock. They reported having only 6 tins, so I ordered 2 more, just in case it becomes even harder to get soon.
It’s hard to believe a company would shoot itself in the foot so terribly the fun of this hobby IS variety, if they are to discontinue blends who’s recipes are potentially rather old at least put out the blending recipe so a match company can put their efforts into maintaining the legacy Unfortunately a company like stg is so gutless and uncertain of itself as an empire it will never give small companies the benefit to work without their massive shadow looming over them ):

I’m not for boycotts, but I refuse to buy anything STG. Laudisi and Gawith will be the only pipe tobacco I buy. Ever. C&D needs our support. My hope is Laudisi and Gawith will somehow benefit from this terrible cutting by STG. Gawith uses very high quality tobacco in their flakes. And the long tradition needs to survive.

The EU is talking about banning all tobacco manufacturing and distribution in the next couple of years. I don't know if Denmark is part of the EU but if it is they really shot them selves in the foot. With Germany currently in the EU that means HU tobaccos will be in trouble. If sutliff was still going to be around the existing factory in VA would be the logical place to make it

The European Cancer Organisation and other European societies have called for the EU to take more aggressive action against the tobacco industry. They want the EU to create a "Tobacco-Free Generation" by 2040, where less than 5% of the population uses tobacco.
This is the McClelland nightmare all over again. We have ONE custom blend left without a Sutliff component. (I manage a B&M that has a WALL of jars.) And people are absolutely panic buying. I’m just not going to bother for our blends - it’s just delaying the inevitable. I’ll do it now while it’s slow. I already have a plan for 90% of it 👍 C&D is about to have a record year, I’m guessing! *And don’t get me started about how STG simply does not care about pipe smokers, B&M’s - and our entire community. 😡 Add the fact that I’m in NY - and they want to raise the tax from 75% to 95% and ban smoking on patios. (Weed is taxed at like 15-20%, btw.) I’m be been crabbing about this for a while, sorry! This is just….so sad.

When McCellands closed shop, I didn’t take it seriously and didn’t buy much prior to the closure. Deeply regret that decision. Won’t make the same mistake again here.
Terrible news. It's extremely difficult to find good pipe tobaccos here in Italy, even more so after samuel gawith stopped being imported, and HH blends were easily available (if pretty pricey). I'll have to go more frequently in Switzerland to buy cornell and diehl and GL Pease tobaccos. Luckily I live near the border. Strange move cutting HH tobacco production. Damn corporations, ruining everything that's nice.

What’s amazing to me is how they cut out the majority of the HH line. I always thought those were highly profitable blends.

The 1lb bags will be re-sold in smaller ounce form by retailers as they do now. Bulk is split up by B&Ms and online retailers.
Buy C&D, gawith, Dan tobacco. No stg. I’d recommend the briar fellowships blends as well
