Don’t know what this guy is talking about but he’s out there. I’ve been smoking some flavorful aromatics in a thick walled curved stem pipe. The pipe stays lit with no problem. When it comes to pipes it seems like everybody has a video.
@@edz2974 Cool if that works for you. This is the method that works for me and a lot of people seem to struggle with smoking aromatics so this video is to help those people. People also have commented about how, since using my methods, they've been able to get a good smoke as opposed to what they're used to. My method isn't the only method, but it definitely helped a lot of people and clearly works.
Agreed. I'm wondering how long this guy has been smoking. He talks like someone who has been smoking for a very short time and is excited to talk about it, but is saying things that he's either heard, such as aro's have no flavor but also the flavor ghosts a pipe, or things he's just decided are "proper", like saying you need to clench your pipe more when smoking aros. I also have no idea where he got the stem shape idea from. Using straight stems like that for goopy aro's is a recipe for getting a mouth full of dottle.
@@wtfserpico So you're saying I'm wrong if I talk about things I've heard from someone else, but I'm also wrong if I talk about things I found through experience? 😂😂 I also never once said you HAVE to clench your pipe between your teeth when you smoke aromatics... "A mouthful of dottle" has never been an issue for me consider I know what a pipe cleaner looks like.
@@TomSmokesPipes we have no idea if what you say was completely different than what you did because you chopped up your footage in the edit so much. you immediately follow a cut with claiming you showed a good example, despite the cut removing our context of what you actually did realtime.
Bent stems do tend to build a lot of moisture if you puff too fast But sometimes you have to puff fast in the beginning to keep it lit, or else it goes out quick
number one key to smoking any tobacco enjoyably: don't be shy about using pipe cleaners to extract the excess moisture from combustion and saliva. When buying any non- straight stem pipe test the pipe with a pipe cleaner to ensure you can get the end of the cleaner down into the shank and/bowl. Avoid the gurgle.
Tom did a great awesome video for all of us pipe smokers; the quality of his records are also next level which makes it pleasant to watch, thank you! BUT .. ( there goes that “ but 🤦🏻♂️😅 ) my gent forgot to mention the BEST PIPE FOR SMOKING AROMATICS : A meerschaum pipe! And NOP ! Not the Missouri ( all thou that works too , much better than a briar ) That’s the best pipe for aromatics , they don’t ghost and they don’t affect the flavor of the tobacco at all. If you like to smoke aromatics , do yourself a huge flavor and a wonderful gift - buy a Turkish authentic Meerschaum PIPE ( or a corn Missouri if your on a tight budget ) - you won’t regret it, and the best part : you only need one for all your aromatics. Turkish Meers pipes also DONT NEED REST. Thank me later gents! Have a nice smoke 😎💨
Thanks John! Around the 2:00 mark I did mention the Corn Cob pipes and how they're very hard to ghost, so I got you covered on that. Unfortunately I've never actually had the opportunity to smoke a true Meerschaum pipe, but now I might have to pick one up for myself! Thanks!
@@TomSmokesPipes Yeah brother, indeed you did mention and if I’m not mistaken there is one corn cob sitting on your table as well, my bad! I’m glad to hear that I’ve inspired you to get a Turkish Meers’ pipe 💪🏻 I’m 100% sure it’s gonna be an awesome addition to your collection! Make sure to get an authentic one ( got mine from the MeerschaumMarket - an srv premium ) & research a bit how they’re different from the briars when it comes to handling and cleaning so you won’t have any unpleasant surprises! Waiting on you with another good quality episode to follow up on this once you got it and used it ! 😎 keep up the good work 👍🏻
Pipe collector and smoker here: I agree with all your pointers: Pack looser than you think you have to. Tamp more lightly than you want to. Puff gently, and attend your smoke. Pay attention to the taste. I would add to be careful drinking alcohol and smoking. Every time I burned my mouth, alcohol was involved. I dulls your attention to the smoke, and strips your mouth of moisture.
I definitely mentioned that alcohol thing in my Favorite Drink Pairings video! Also it increases the risk for mouth disease by mixing tobacco and alcohol.
I love your vids. Thank you so much for sprinkling in a few "F" bombs. It makes your videos honest and authentic. Very fuckin cool brother. Ashton Rainy Day is my favorite aromatic... it tastes like a Christmas fruitcake with a cognac note. It's on a different level from the Captain Black/Sutliff stuff.
You mean to tell me that not only did I start out with the wrong type of tobacco, but I used the wrong packing method? And here I thought I was just terrible at pipe smoking.
Great video! The only American aromatic I smoke is Autumn Evening. I am a Lakeland fiend though haha. I may have to give this a try! How do you feel about Lakelands? I do enjoy some of their less floral stuff like chocolate flake and Kendal black Cherry. But I go straight for the soap stuff haha: Kendal flake, brown flake scented etc.
@@TomSmokesPipes there is nothing like them. I am smoking one now haha. They're not goopy and more synergistic with the leaf because they use stronger Virginias, burleys, and dark fired. They are worth trying at least. I thought I would hate them but love them!
I wish I have seen this video before I started pipe smoking. I started off with aromatic tobacco, thick bent bruyere pipe and wondering why it tastes like regular cigarette at best and ash at worst. Not to mention why I have to relight at least 12 times in a sitting.

If you are only getting aromatic smoke without much flavor, then you need to try some flavorful aromatics! Cult Blood Red Moon, Tombigbee (formerly Old Toby), Sun Bear - Black Locust, Riverboat (formerly Rivendell), Warped - Scarecrow, etc.
The way I think of it : its like drinking a very strong, sweet red wine. You just take a few sips here and there. Btw: "molto dolce" means "very sweet" in Italian.
I think acrylic stems are superior in every way. If it's too hard for your teeth (like it is for me), then just get a rubber pipe bit/sleeve. Not sure what they're actually called but they are super cheap and easy and make pipe clenching much easier and more comfortable. It also saves your stems from being all chewed up or even broken from clenching.
@TomSmokesPipes I love the mixture of colours and textures on that one. Thank you. If you recall any other brand that have that design feel free to tell me. Wish you peace and health.
Awesome informative video😊 I enjoyed watching along and learned a couple things too...Nice to see a pipe video regarding pipes and tobacco lol not religion and politics like most lately😂 Cheers, hope your day is awesome
@@TheDeviusPiper I've noticed the weird amount of religion and politics in a lot of the more popular pipe channels. Very strange, and also somewhat off-putting considering not everyone is interested in that stuff. Gonna try to keep it neutral on this channel!
As a former pipe smoker, trick of smoking aromatics is you should blow through the stem and let the hasidic substances collected inside chamber and mouthpiece go out.Cigarettes and cigars clean themselves because they don't go out after you light it. On pipes the hasidic content stays inside pipe and you should blow it away before taking to the smoke in.In every single puff you should do the same.So casing and flavouring is not the issue here even you smoke cigarette tobacco or cigar tobacco in your pipe you still get tongue bite.Because pipes are very old way to smoke tobacco cigarettes and cigars are by design superior to pipes they are high IQ products.
Silly question but I don’t know 🤷♂️, do you inhale or just enjoy the smoke like you’d do with a cigar? Great video, I’m going camping and fishing this weekend and I’d like to try aromatics.
@@chiefppq8584 You CAN inhale. I choose not to. You could also do something called Retrohaling which is when you take the smoke into your mouth and then breathe it out of your nose. Most people say it enhances the flavor as well. I'd do some research on this one though!

@TomSmokesPipes i was mostly joking, im a newbie to pipe smoking i never smoked cigars/cigarretes and jumped straight to pipes. Im learning a lot right now, bingeing at videos of how to properly smoke a pipe. Thanks for this video.
Thanks tom. People say that aromatic pipe tobaccos are like the candies of the tobacco world. People also say that its more of a beginner tobacco? Is this true?
@@michaelmouawad3575 Aromatics are typically the opposite of a beginner tobacco because it requires good technique and practice to smoke properly. If someone is trying to imply that they're beginner tobaccos because they "taste better" or something like that, they're wrong. The type of tobacco you like is all preference. Some beginners try Virginia's and love them, some beginners try English blends and love those, and some beginners dislike aromatics. It's all preference, just like beer, food, etc.
Starting out on aromatics teaches you early on how to properly smoke a pipe. Due to the wealth of informative content on TH-cam, I already knew before I ever smoked my first bowl that there was some sort of technique to smoking a pipe in order to get the most enjoyment out of it, and so my main goal was learning how to smoke as slow as possible. Keeping it lit came second. So in my opinion, from my own personal experiences, aromatics probably made the learning curve take place sooner rather than later, and prepared me for whatever might be going into my pipe in the future. When you think you’re smoking slow enough, smoke slower.
No honorable mention to Autum Evening by C&D? I generally only smoke aromatics while walking the dog in this case i will use a butane to light and have a zippo style lighter incase i need a relight. This is a fairly comprehensive list for those of whom that are relatively new to pipes/tobacco. But i dont think a new smoker should begin on a aromatic due to the chances of tounge bite.

Bent stems do tend to build a lot of moisture if you puff too fast
But sometimes you have to puff fast in the beginning to keep it lit, or else it goes out quick
number one key to smoking any tobacco enjoyably: don't be shy about using pipe cleaners to extract the excess moisture from combustion and saliva.
And NOP ! Not the Missouri ( all thou that works too , much better than a briar )
That’s the best pipe for aromatics , they don’t ghost and they don’t affect the flavor of the tobacco at all.
😎 keep up the good work 👍🏻
@@JohnJordache Unfortunate that they rarely make Meerschaums with Vulcanite stems! My teeth can't stand acrylic. Too hard for me!
have any of ya'll tried a falcon pipe with a meerschaum bowl, they seem to be affordable - well less expensive than a true meerschaumn pipe?
@@lonnierussell1926 I haven’t but looking into getting one of those as well, a briar with meers bowl is quite intriguing 👍🏻
@@TomSmokesPipes I'll check that video! I've found a nice hot beverage is best for a smoke. Non-alcoholic beers are my #2 pairing.
I’m in. Thank you for teaching this.
@@JohnsPipeJourney You're very welcome!

I love your vids. Thank you so much for sprinkling in a few "F" bombs.
It makes your videos honest and authentic. Very fuckin cool brother.
I ordered the corn cob pipes and the three tobaccos from your links in the other videos. I'm waiting for my shit to get here.
Can't wait to get started. Thank you.
Love your videos! I am so excited for my hobby to begin
I subbed because of your pronunciation of ‘sutliff’. 😁
Great video. Thanks! 😊✌️
Ashton Rainy Day is my favorite aromatic... it tastes like a Christmas fruitcake with a cognac note. It's on a different level from the Captain Black/Sutliff stuff.
Amazing video my man.
@@mnk9073 Thank you!
You mean to tell me that not only did I start out with the wrong type of tobacco, but I used the wrong packing method? And here I thought I was just terrible at pipe smoking.
Excellent video, thanks man!
@@MisterDearly Never tried Lakelands! Will have to give em a go
@@TomSmokesPipes there is nothing like them. I am smoking one now haha. They're not goopy and more synergistic with the leaf because they use stronger Virginias, burleys, and dark fired. They are worth trying at least. I thought I would hate them but love them!
I want a cap that stays alight as long as yours. Mine needs to be relit continually and I also get scalp bite!
I wish I have seen this video before I started pipe smoking. I started off with aromatic tobacco, thick bent bruyere pipe and wondering why it tastes like regular cigarette at best and ash at worst. Not to mention why I have to relight at least 12 times in a sitting.
GOOD Evening 😊 Just Found Your Channel and Subbed 👏🏼 Fantastic Video👌🏽 Your Video is Informative and Educational 👍🏼 Thanks For Sharing 👏🏼 Have a Great Day and Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Wow where did you get that hat it’s so cool with the flame coming out of the top😮🇬🇧👍
If you want aromatic, try Clan … it’s like living in a custard powder factory. Nice!
Hey man what pipe is that on the thumb nail? Thanks
Bruh i thought youre on fire. Literally 😂
By any chance do you know what is the brand of the pipe in the thumbnail?
@@jacobliddiard158 Not sure, but it looks like it could be a Rossi!
@TomSmokesPipes
I love the mixture of colours and textures on that one. Thank you. If you recall any other brand that have that design feel free to tell me. Wish you peace and health.
So apparently everything about my pipe is wrong for smoking aromatics, gonna take your advice and get me some straight stemmed corn cob pipes
Ha man I'm all new to this and was wondering what are some good barbin and brown surger tobaccos my grandfather smoked it when I was younger and I loved the smell and want to try some also what's a good starter pipe that's not a Cobb I don't really like how they look
I dont know why pipe smoking is supossed to be relaxing with all this. I would need to relax after doing all this.
@@Ulfhednar-o9t once you learn it's second nature
@TomSmokesPipes i was mostly joking, im a newbie to pipe smoking i never smoked cigars/cigarretes and jumped straight to pipes. Im learning a lot right now, bingeing at videos of how to properly smoke a pipe. Thanks for this video.
is a black cavendish considered an aromatic? im trying it now in a straight corncub and it's smoking better now.
Black Cavendish is similar to aromatics / can be used in aromatics but it's not exactly synonymous
very informative
Is this going to cure gurgling?
Nice ima try it
No honorable mention to Autum Evening by C&D? I generally only smoke aromatics while walking the dog in this case i will use a butane to light and have a zippo style lighter incase i need a relight.
This is a fairly comprehensive list for those of whom that are relatively new to pipes/tobacco. But i dont think a new smoker should begin on a aromatic due to the chances of tounge bite.
@@alexpomerleau9795 I do enjoy autumn evening as well!
