Bohuslav Martinu - First Sonata - Flute & Piano

Flutist Uri Shoham and pianist Chanoch Gruenfeld, long term collaborators, play the First Sonata by Bohuslav Martinu. Uri Shoham, former Principal Flute of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, joined the IPO in 1951 and retired in 1997.
Bohuslav Martinu fled to the USA during World War II. He spent the summer of 1945 on Cape Cod where he composed the First Sonata while hearing the calls of the countless Whipoorwills that live there (third movement).
The First Sonata is dedicated to Georges Laurent, Principal Flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the time.

An excellent performance ! I don't remember the 1st time I heard this work, but I do remember falling in love with it immediately. It has everything in it from the slight darkness of the middle movement to the sense of liberation in the final movement!

Martinu wrote this piece before leaving the US to Europe at the end of WW2 but communism in his native country prevented him from finding an occupation there. He lived then in western Europe.

My first introduction to this piece was hearing a pianist playing it in a practice room next to mine at music school. I had to ask him what it was. Great performance!

I did play it for a competition years ago - it is kind of a love-hate-relationship. I totally sucked at the competition, but right now I start practicing it again and it is easier than I remembered ... I love hearing it though. Playing it not so much ...
