    This phenomenal band suffered the tragedy of poor timing as the scene turned to grunge... John Sykes should be a household name for any fan of Rock/Metal. The best guitarist/vocalist combo in history.

      The Blue Murder album is truly an all around incredible release! Everything from the writing to the production absolutely kills,not to mention the fkng guitars! To your point,the timing wasn't ideal and the record label botched the marketing so sales suffered greatly. I'd put the debut album up against Whitesnake '87 any day.
      Another harsh reality is that David Coverdale fired Sykes and the rest of the band that recorded the smash hit WS '87,so fir all the casual fan knows it was Viv Campbell and Adrian Vandenberg who played on the album since they did the touring. Had John done that tour he'd have gotten the widespread exposure he'd earned IMO.

      Doing so well in Whitesnake and then all the work going in to the Blue Murder Album it's amazing things didn't continue. Music changes but still even Metalicca are going to this day and even others making a comeback. I don't know too much about the other members except Phil Lynott (thin Lizzy) was part of original line up. But used to have this song on cassette 😀 many yrs ago. John has great talent to play rythm and lead guitar and sing flawlessly

      Not so much, any more, of a debut album. More of an "only album". Rumour has it that Sykes is locked into some kind of lifetime contract where it's not worth doing anything else- probably got stitched up by Coverdale.

    Thank you so much for this share. I absolutely love this recording. The killer tone of Sykes guitar, his amazing soulfull vocals at the top of his range, it is really the best version of Valley Of The Kings. And speaking of a Tony Martin composition, I guess he´s also has a hand in writting Out Of Love because the melodies remind me so much of his work in Eternal Idol and Tyr albums.

    Damn, this is about as good as it gets. How this guy isn't a household name of 80's guitar greats is stupefying. Great voice too. Looks like he had the having too much of everything curse and he got HATED on big time. Coverdale had two GREAT guitarists (Campbell/Vandenberg) replace him and they both in tandem could't come close to Sykes. Another 80's guy overshadowed by a frontman is Richie Sambora. Really versatile guitarist with a great singing voice that can do the quasi-shred stuff but also play with feeling.

      I agree, in a way… a huge part of Whitesnake was John Sykes and it’s not the same without him but Coverdale is still one of the greatest singers ever and super emphatic with emotion in his vocals. So is John Sykes on vocals and guitar. I can see why D.C. got him out. John Sykes was a triple threat. Guitar skills, vocal skills, and looks. Two forces too powerful for each other. I think they should’ve done something like The Cars. Have both on lead vocals. But at least we got what we got from WS and BM. Art.

      Coverdale owns Whitesnake. It's HIS band. He hires who he wants. Always has. Sykes is great but it's hard to have 2 alpha males together in one band. Just ask Ted Nugent and Derek St. Holmes.

    • @dougvolinski5824
      @dougvolinski5824 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Coverdale dragged his feet recording his vocals so the band rehearsed the songs to stay sharp. Sykes sang while rehearsing, coverdale walked in and heard it, got scared that he was gonna get replaced in his own band so the coward fired them. Insecure a hole ruined the band. Sykes formed Blue Murder, record execs incorrectly (my opinion) chose others over Blue Murder. Too bad, they could have been monsters
