    The reason why this looks so similar to Disney animation is because it’s from Don Bluth. Who used to be a chief animator with Disney. He left the Disney company over creative differences and started his own animation studio. Don is responsible for basically every popular non Disney animated film. (Anastasia, American Tale, Thumbilina, All dogs go to heaven, and Land Before Time)
    This story was pretty successful because people all over the world were captivated by the Romanov story. Victims of a brutal uprising. Her disappearance is a mystery and the story has been romanticized by many people. There are many people who believe she was secretly smuggled out of the country.
    If Rasputin sounds familiar, it’s because he is voiced by Christopher Lloyd. (Doc Brown from Back to the Future) Fun fact, he couldn’t preform the song so voice actor Jim Cummings sang In the Dark of the Night. Little known fact about Jim Cummings is he had to step in for Jeremy Irons in Lion King. As when Irons was singing “Be Prepared” he tore his vocal chords. The second half of the song is Jim Cummings.

    This movie was made by Fox initially, Disney now owns it since they acquired Fox.
    It's also based on the rumour/myth that Anastasia survived the tragedy. The beginning is real historical events, Rasputin was involved with the Czar and his family as an advisor I believe (granted he wasn't magical in real life) and when the Russian revolution happened the family were all taken and executed. There is a woman in the 20s or 30s who famously claimed she was Anastasia, and she looked close enough and was the right age that many people believed her. She was proven with DNA to not be Anastasia, and since the bodies all seem to have been found in a mass grave.
    The info above is all off the top of my head, I apologize if some is incorrect as I haven't looked into Anastasia in a long time.

      There is a very good docuseries on Netflix and it’s called The Last Czar, goes into Rasputin and the revolution. I watched it so long ago I’m not sure if it went into Anna Anderson or not at the end. Also, just recently they truly confirm the DNA on the remains, that were found years ago.

      Anastasia and her brothers' bodies were not in the same grave as their parents and 3 sisters. Their grave was found many, many years later, so that's why they thought she might have survived. The little brother stood no chance because he had hemafilia, and the smallest scratch could potentially kill him. That's why no one even considered he could have survived even when his body was undiscovered.

    The reason why Dmitri and Anastasia have American accents is because they're John Cusack and Meg Ryan, mainly 😂 They were kind of banking on the rom-com casting draw, and to do that they had to sound like themselves. Though ironically, Rasputin is Christopher Lloyd and the Dowager Empress is Angela Lansberry, and they managed to sound semi-recognizable (Mostly?) while still attempting to be Russian. Though Kelsey Grammer went completely full-on for Vlad haha, you'd never notice it was him if you didn't know.
    The truth of the story is pretty shitty. There was whole Russian revolution, the people rose up just preceding WWI, the entire Romanov family and their servants were shot and buried. Originally, when they found the bodies, one of the sisters remains was not with the others, so it was speculated that the youngest survived somehow. A woman (who was a fraud) actually came out in the 20s saying she was her, much like in this film, it was a whole thing. But later on they found another body somewhere else, and it was disproven that any of the Romanovs could have survived. Rasputin was a drunk womanizer who had the royal family convinced he was holy man somehow, because the youngest child, the only boy, had hemophilia and he somehow knew how to calm his attacks. But rumors often spread that he was sleeping with the queen, that he was actually corrupt or an evil magician like in this story, and he was attacked and killed - had to be killed multiple times in order for it to take because he was so drunk he couldn't feel pain, most likely, which didn't help the rumors.

    • @BragoGaaraLover
      @BragoGaaraLover 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A main reason why he seemed to heal Alexei Nikolaevich's hemophilia was because he apparently disallowed the administration of aspirin. It was widely used at the time to control pain but it was unknown that it was an anti-clotting agent until the 1950s.
      As for his inability to die, that story came from a memoir by Prince Felix Yusupov, one of the nobles responsible for Rasputin's death. He supposedly tried to poison him with cakes and wine and when that didn't work, he was shot multiple times. However, later analysis by Dr Carolyn Harris notes that the actual circumstances were apparently less dramatic than Yusupov's account. Rasputin's daughter recorded that her father disliked sweet food and would not have eaten the supposedly poisoned cakes. An autopsy account by the official surgeon involved has no record of poisoning or drowning but simply records death by a single bullet fired into the head at close range. Dmitry Kosorotov, a senior autopsy surgeon, found no evidence that Rasputin had been poisoned.
      I realize that you may have been saying the part about him not dying was a rumor.
      For the record, I'm not defending the man. He was not a holy man and used his power and influence to get what he wanted such as having sex with multiple women.

    as a Russian, I wouldn't say the lack of accent of main characters ever bothered me. Mainly because I have watched this in russian translation :) Yet, it's interesting to me that american movies do that thing with accents in general. In russian cinema they don't imitate accents to indicate the location of a movie, and an accent usually indicates that the character is a foreingner to a country where the plot is set.

    As I'm sure many people have talked about this being a true story and how people really did believe that Anastasia survived. The reason for this belief was because when the soldiers were ordered to get rid of the bodies, they separated Alexei (Anastasia's brother) and one of the sisters (Now assumed to have been Maria) only about 50 ft away from where they buried the rest of the family, this was done to confuse anyone who might have found the other bodies. They orginally were all dumped in a mine shaft but then retrieved to be covered in acid and burned (So that they couldn't be identified) And buried in a different location. However, Alexei's remains were discovered along with one of the sisters, they assumed to be Maria, they were discovered in 2007. They believe that because the body of the girl was probably Maria's body, they figured that Anastasia was actually buried with the rest of her family. Sadly the story of the Romanov's was very brutal, and very likely to leave no survivors. The soldiers that carried out the assassination, shot each other during the act because of how crazy they were going, they were just shooting, not caring where the bullets flew as long as they hit someone. Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, their five children Olga (22), Tatiana (21), Maria (19), Anastasia (17), and Alexei (13), along with 4 of their remaining servants were killed during the Romanovs assassination. Also with the family were 3 dogs, Ortipo, a French bulldog, belonging to Tatiana, Jimmy/Jemmy, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, belonging to Anastasia, and Joy, a King Charles spaniel, belonging to Alexei. Two of the dogs were killed because of their howling but Joy survived because he wasn't making any noise. Yes, Nicholas II was not a good ruler, but his children did not deserve to die especially as brutally as they did, for his actions.

    This entire movie is a fantastical retelling of the Fall of the Romanov Hours, the takeover by the Bolshewiks and the persistent Rumors that Anastasia Romanov (as well as maybe her younger brother Alexei) might have survived the purging of the family.
    This takes place shortly after WWI. Nicholai Romanov was, by all accounts a mostly inoffensive Tzar, no better or worse than many of his predecessors. BUT when the War broke out, he decided as Tzar, _he_ should be leading the armies personally. The Problem? He was an absolutely Shite Leader. His direct intervention cost hundreds of russian Soldiers their life.
    This, together with a general anti-rpyalty sentiment that had been bubbling since the french revolution and a famine due to bad harvests were the last sparks the Russian populus needed to decide to overthrow the Royal Family, which at that point was made up of Tzar Nicholai, his wife Tzarina Alexandra and their 5 Children, Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and Alexei.
    They were held captive for quite sometime, before the Red Army executed them in the basement of the house they were kept in, because the danger of them getting rescued by one of the other european royal familys was getting to high.
    At that point, they coated the bodys with acid and buried them in two different graves, The Patrents and three of the girls in one, Alexei and one of the other girls in a second, to make it harder to identify them. At first , only the first grave was found, which then led to rumors that Crown Prince Alexei and one of the younger girls, Anastasia or Maria may have survived. The public at some point focused on Anastasia, because her name means "Ressurection" in Greek.
    Sadly, later, the second grave was found and it has been since concluded that all 5 Romanovs died that day (If you wanna know more, I reccomend the channel "ask a mortician" she has a good breakdown on what happened to them, according to what we know or suspect)
    There was a string of impostors, one even lived with Grandmama in Paris for quite some time, but in the end, all have been proven false. One of the true statements in this movie is that Grandmother Romanov never saw her Anastasia again.
    Now, about Rasputin: He _was_ a real person, just like most of the other people here, _but_ he had nothing (directly) to do with the downfall of the Romanovs. In fact, he died before the revolution started. He also remained on good terms with the royals until his death.
    He was tauted as a miracle healer and especially Alexandra believed fervently in him. The young prince Alexei had sadly inhereted Hemophillia from her side of the family, something she greatly blamed herself for. He was extremely fragile, as even the slightes bumbs and bruises took days to heal. At one point he was nearly on the verge of death after a bumpy Carriage ride.
    Those were the times when Alexandra summoned or wrote to Rasputin, begging him to pray for her Boy. Rasputins answer was that he would and that she should keep the doctors away from him, which she did. Alexei recovered remakably quickly after that, which Alexandra took as a sign that rasputin was the real deal.
    Modern scientists believe that it was probably because the Doctors where giving Alexei _Aspirin_ a bloodthinning, bloodclotting-preventing drug, as a painkiller, which, as a modern person probably realizes, is _terrible_ Idea when you ahve a patient who already has bad clotting. So sending them away is actually what helped Alexei to heal.
    All in al, while I love this movie it has barely any basis in historical fact. Still avgood movie and if you made it till here, Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk XDD

      I love this movie but it bothers me that they changed Anastasia's age. It takes away any historical basis.
      I actually remember another animated film about Anastasia, it was really old and I have no idea which company produced it, but it took a more realistic approach to the story. It followed the theory that she might have survived thanks to some jewelry (I think it was some brooch) that stopped the bullet. Then a young revolutionary soldier that she's been in love with took her body wanting to bury it, and realised that she was just unconscious. He escaped with her and they lived happily ever after.

They were actually first cousins, though. The father of the current king of England was brother to the mothers of the xar and kiser, and their mother was queen Victoria. This is why she was known as the grandmother of Europe because sll her kids married into European royal families. Though today of the three on the English monarchy survives.

    I love this film! I love how it feels kinda like a play but within a “real” setting.
    This film is actually pretty offensive though. The rumors that Anastasia is alive is offensive given that the entire family was held captive and then murdered. This includes Anastasia. The youngest one killed was Alexei. He was 13 and the heir to the throne. There were a number of women throughout the years who claimed to be Anastasia because of these stupid rumors.
    Both Alexei and his mother had a life threatening blood condition that prevented their blood from clotting if they got a cut or nose bleed. It was for this reason, that their mother trusted Rasputin because he claimed to be a magic man who could stop the excessive bleeding. Alexei meant everything to Alexandra! She tried so hard to produce a boy for the throne and there was pressure on her to do so. She was so disillusioned by Rasputin that she ignored complaints about him. From what I’ve read, he did some terrible things to the girls (being vague but should be obvious what I’m implying).
    It’s also true that Rasputin was a pain in the ass to get rid of! The amount of attempts on his life and still survived is kinda wild.

    • @ravenm6443
      @ravenm6443 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@leno_o17 it’s the misrepresentation of what happened that’s offensive. The movie sorta makes a mockery of everything. For example, Rasputin is shown to be your typical stupid villain who can’t get his way. But irl he was very clever and quite effective with his manipulation. He was known to SA the girls and got away with it because Alexei was heir to the thrown so protect him at all cost. As for the reason he “needed” Rasputin, it was because both him and their mom had a blood clotting disorder that if they got injured, they could bleed out. But Rasputin, who claimed to be a magic man, knew how to stop the excessive loss and for that reason, Alexandra blindly trusted him and refused to see the red flags added to the pressure of Alexei being the only heir. She also faced a lot of pressure from the public to produce a boy. So the pressure on Alexandra was pretty substantial. The overall story is loosely based on a woman who either intentionally or unintentionally claimed to be Anastasia. She did actually meet with Sophie, who wasn’t the Grand duchess’s cousin but rather a Baroness and close friend of Alexandra’s. The Grand Duchess was truly heartbroken when she found out about her families deaths. So much so she didn’t want to believe it but also didn’t seem to question it either. When people started to pretend to be Anastasia, she outright refused to meet them. I think for her she felt it was better not knowing whether they were alive or not.
      In general, I don’t think most people would want a film that misrepresents loved one’s lives in such a mocking way. I get the film is kind of a “what if” scenario, but regardless of who knew them or not, these people we’re important to their country (regardless of how awful the tsar was). Their incarceration and deaths uprooted an entire nation in a very negative way. So it’s fare that some Russians would feel some kind of way about this film. Especially since this event didn’t happen that long ago. My grandparents would have been born around the time of their deaths.

    • @leno_o17
      @leno_o17 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ravenm6443 I know the history. I'm from Poland, so it's also a part of my country's history. Poland was under Russian occupation throughout the 19th century until World War I. Shortly after the October Revolution, the Polish-Bolshevik War began. By the way, the most famous "fake Anastasia" turned out to be a Polish woman years later.
      I understand that the movie is not historically accurate, and I also don't like the magical aspect. But I don't think there is anything particularly offensive about it. I haven't come across any Russians who were really "offended" by it
      ...because, like you said it's just a "what if" scenario and another deconstruction of a popular story. Similar "offensive" movies and theories have been appearing constantly over the past 70 years, and they have made this story a permanent part of pop culture. Moreover, this rumor/urban legend was also very popular in Russia itself. It's just a natural social phenomenon.
      Another aspect is that the story of Anastasia was probably a coping mechanism in response to Bolshevik terror. We can say a lot about the Tsar and how bad life was for the people under his rule, but the brutality and destruction brought by the Bolsheviks/Soviets shook Europe. In fact, what I like about this animated version is that they show some of the bleakness after the Bolsheviks took power. Honestly, the moment when Volodia realizes that the documents are no longer blue and that he hates the new regime because everything is now "red" made me chuckle a bit. It's a nice social reference.
      So, to sum up, I understand that taking on real history is always risky, but it's hard to blame people for embracing a story that was like a glimmer of hope in response to trauma. People wanted to believe that an innocent girl had a chance to survive these bloody times.

      @@leno_o17 I had heard that when it came out, it was not received well in Russia due to the things I mentioned, that’s not to say that people’s opinions couldn’t have changed. Also possible media over exaggerated (as media does unfortunately).
      We are indeed talking about the same woman who faked being Anastasia. It was officially confirmed she was Polish in the 1970s.
      Cheers 🌸

    I don't know if you went into this with a negative mindset, but this was the first reaction of yours that I didn't enjoy. You evidently missed all of the exposition of the beginning of the movie and then proceeded to complain about being confused as if it's somehow their fault you missed things they explicitly said. I love this movie, and don't think you gave it a fair shake.

      You're right, I don't know why I wasn't feeling this one as much as the others.
      From memory I recorded it during a heatwave around Christmas which was pretty tedious and disruptive to my schedule.
      But I agree, it wasn't my best work
