I found your explanation of the basic approach toward grass growth , palatable dry matter and requirements of the stock very helpful. You have a beautiful looking farm there. How many Hectares do you have? Enjoy your vlog! Keep them coming please.

    Good one again.
Do you buy some steers as well as breed?
Gee whiz you have some steep country.

      Thanks,
Yes the Steers with the 2ths are purchased in from a station not far from us. They’re nice quiet animals which is what we like.
Hm some of the hill faces a fairly vertical.

Good question, the opening weekend I must have shot close to my limit and then have had some good shoots since.

Hi there we have been following your videos the past few months from the south of Ireland. We farming sheep here the same as you. You put up a video back in jan about lambs ears and heads swelling and you referred to it as facial eczema. Do you think this is as a result of lack of zinc and do you use any specific type of mineral drench against this
    Very interesting videos.
    Thanks in advance

Awesome, thanks for the follow! It’s not from Zinc deficiency as such but supplementing with a certain dose of Zinc does stop facial eczema damage.
Facial eczema is a toxin produced by fungi at the base of grass or sward that attacks the liver which means the liver can’t produce melatonin which stops the inflammatory process of sun and sunburn. So therefore they are super sensitive to light and end up swelling. Zinc can be given to stop the damage to the liver either weekly orally as a drench or a bolus which can protect for weeks. We’ve never had to do this but there are many other things we do to help protect us from FE. We graze longer pastures, buy rams from a breeder who tests for FE tolerance and we avoid mowing pasture and leaving trash on the fields when temperatures and conditions are right for fungi growth.
In NZ most Vet clinics are testing pastures in their area for facial eczema and put this info out publicly so that people know when to be vigilant.
Hope this helps but it might be irrelevant to your situation.
      Thanks, Will.
