6 Families, 3 Homesteads | Regenerating an Abandoned Pasture | My Mentor

  • My sister Coreen and I walk her homestead property and discuss where the fences should go, the location of a food forest and the existing flora on the future pasture that will have to be replaced over time with forage for livestock.
Welcome to our self reliant homestead! Join us, Shawn and Dervla, as we create a resilient, abundant and sustainable ecosystem that feeds our families from the land in Ontario Canada. Using permaculture as our guide, we strive to become independent in water, food, energy and shelter, focused on beauty in form and efficiency in function.
Our Self Reliance is a life of compromise between my two daughters and my wife's preference for culture, comfort and formality, and I, with my love of chaotic and beautiful but challenging and often uncomfortable wilderness living. The resulting homesteads are an eclectic blend of modern with traditional, whimsical with practical, formal with informal, civilized with rustic.
Over the last five years, my wife and I designed and built our dream homesteads from scratch with very little outside help; from undeveloped, declining forest to a comfortable home and cabin with a prolific edible landscape for people and wildlife equally. For many years, we have strived to lessen our burden on others by taking full responsibility for the health and welfare of our immediate family while building a strong community around us, both online and offline. Now that the infrastructure is in place here, we will be spending more time working cooperatively with community members, including extended family, to collectively become more resilient while living a deeply satisfying and meaningful life. Thank you for being part of that!

The best way to regenerate the pasture naturally is to put livestock. Drop the best quality hay for them and the hay will seed the pasture and the livestock will do what they do to fertilize. Rotation works well to all rest and regrowth.

The inspiring journey of six families across three homesteads working together to regenerate an abandoned pasture is a powerful testament to the spirit of community, dedication, and sustainable living. Your role in this transformative project not only reflects your commitment to revitalizing the land but also highlights the incredible impact of mentorship and collaborative effort in achieving meaningful change. It’s a beautiful reminder of how working together and learning from each other can breathe new life into neglected spaces, creating thriving environments for future generations. Your efforts are truly commendable and uplifting. And I am Floating Village Life.

Sorghum.. darling. Plant lots if Sorghum ...you cam feed stalks and all to cattle, pigs, chooks...just put stalks through a chipper and Feed then this with the seeds heads. Told you before about chipping curb stalks etc and feeding the chooks pigs goats, cattle not as much, they are picky......you can fertilizer make....build two dams, one higher than the other.. .look after can send you the info. My dad who was a biologist university prof retired the ba farm..he devised a way of anaerobic animal faeces through the dams to fertilize the sorghum...yes it was safe the two dams made it so... You could use the water on all fruit trees too . . I'm too old l
to do this stuff now but I'm willing to teach what I know....

I find this new endeavor very interesting because a lot of us would like to move further out, but the remote properties we can afford are LIKELY to be tired, abused, or have serious problems with soil fertility or other issues. As a mom with 6 kids, age 18 to 40, and two grandchildren, only one has been able to afford a house, while the rest are on a hamster-wheel of work and living expenses. My dream is to cash out our "nice" house and buy 80 acres in LeaveMeAlonesVille where we can carve off 5 acres for each kid for a "tiny house" and pool our resources for more involved projects, such as growing food.

Shawn if you have a barn loft you can stalk the hay up in there for the Winter time !!! We did that one winter when the tractors broke down !!! Left some on wagons close by the barn with Tarps over them !!! What the Cows or goats don't eat then they lye in it then !!! Then that is used for gardens in the Spring time !!! It was always something to do there I know that so never fear about the potatoes they are great for empty tummies on a cold winter night !!! With ham slices of potatoes plus milk & some butter baked for awhile it is a meal in it self for you !!!

Land's sake, Shawn. Praying for your sons-in-law-to-be, to show up, man! You're the only man in the family! Essentially the only one who can work. You need help in those things you do. Thank the Good Lord above, my husband is finally understanding about nutrition and health. Finally. Because his health and life are in jeopardy. He's seeing the sugar and additives in junk food and processed food. The sugar, the soy, the hidden ingredients. He's finally listening. And this is a large reason why people move to homesteads to grow/raise their own. We are lied to, and must take matters into our own hands. Eating meat and some vegies here; the good stuff. He's lost 16 lbs in 2 weeks by stopping carbs! Regards from far north California

I would love to meet your sister on camera if she’d ever want to join the channel!
I’m so excited to watch this joint homestead development. It’s the path I’m on with my 3 kids and I’m always looking for new ways of thinking about food production
