My personal favourite thing about the Suikoden series is the army recruitment mechanic and watching as your castle changes accordingly. It's such an empowering feeling 😃. Also for anyone who's new and might be playing along; while Kai is good for his unite attack with the hero, he's actually pretty rubbish stat wise compared to other people you'll be getting later. Camille and Cleo on the other hand are good with both magic and physical attacks throughout the game. I'm not going to tell you who to use (except for one important case later on) and actually encourage you to experiment with different party members, but just remember that some are just stronger than others 😏.
Having only played Suikoden V, it's crazy to me how quickly you reach the 'name your castle and start building up the recruits' part in this game. You know, the... the part that's Suikoden.
I honestly wish it took a little longer here, Just to give you more time to show what the Empire truly is like and get to know the characters better. It seems like this game kinda rushed to get you to this point and the pacing suffered a bit for that.
Hazy Runes increase your chance to dodge. Counter Runes increase your chance to counterattack. Now, one unspoken rule about this is you cannot counterattack unless you dodge first, so both rely heavily on TECH, which determines your chance to dodge and counterattack. So characters like Tir and Kai, who have high TECH, also have a high chance to both dodge and counterattack. Additionally, putting a Counter Rune on someone with low TECH is a bad idea.
I don't think I used Luc in my S1 party until near the end of the game, when I needed a beastly magic user. And I second the Kai recommendation; having him in my party got me through most of the game.
I think what the design idea was meant to portray was that stone tablets have text carved into it, therefore the poor color choice. Assuming that is true, it makes logical sense however the text is difficult to read so it really is not justified.
Arrrrgghhh I feel like watching these the day they come out leads to me wanting more and not having it. Rewatching your Suikoden 2 lets play to pass the time inbetween this one.
That's really cool,I thought recruiting people would be just party members you may or may not want to use.Recruiting people to add on to things you can do or improve on in your castle is freaking awesome.
The Kai/Tir buddy attack is up there with the Riou/Jowy attack from Suikoden II. I think even the multipliers are the same; it's pretty wild that you can use it over the entire game unlike in Suikoden II.
Here's my song for this playthrough Do you wanna build an army Do you have much room to play We're recruiting everywhere Everywhere we are recruiting everyday These recruits are our buddies Now we are building an army today Do you wanna build an army Yes I want to build an army
WOOOOOOOO ANOTHER SUIKODEN EPS... :D Don't worry about being ill Lucahjin, glad to see you're feeling better though. @luchajin: Also the percentage for the Counter Crystal is 1.5%
It's definitely hard to come back to the original Suikoden after the second one was just so great, especially since it streamlined so much and gave it a lot of quality of life improvements. But this game still has some great features... we have yet to see. Also Kai *does* kinda break the game over your knee for a bit of it. But that's fine. Break away. ;)
Making mistakes and doing stupid stuff is not only what makes a Let's Play feel real, but is often the part I find most enjoyable. It presents a self inflicted difficulty, stirring real emotions and subsequently enthralling commentary. This is all my opinion of course, so you don't need to apologize on my account, I just go get the popcorn at that point.
I know Lucah keeps talking about these, but the Double Beat Rune in Suikoden 1 works differently than Suikoden 2. It works much more like how high Speed works in Suikoden 2 where your character will jump to the next character before finishing their turn. It does NOT guarantee two attacks per turn, particularly when there is only 1 enemy on the field (ex. boss fights). There is also only 1 Double Beat Rune in the game, affixed to Eikei, but it's removable.
I LOVE MARIE~!!! Her screen time was so little, but she seems like such a good soul~!!! edit: lol and then we just sleep for days and she's probably like really confused and sick of seeing our faces like "Why does the army leader keep freaking sleeping? THERE'S A WAR TO WIN!!" XD
I love the counter rune on Gremio. Then he can stay in the front row. And I love it when you get the rare drop of the Zombie Dragon and get a Lightning Rune! Yay!!!
Yeah, I used Tir and Kai together in the same team a lot. Like you said, it was definitely useful with group encounters, not as much with single bosses.
Lucah, its a Role Playing Game and you have Play the Role of the leader of an army, it works perfectly. I have a major beef with Sansuke! I've never ONCE succeeded with his special effect and I did get him right now like Lucah did.
i got antonio at like the finale of the game almost dude did not want to join me. Also I think I like this games castle more than Suikoden 2's in terms of aesthetic the music in the castle, not so much, tho it did grow on me with time.
If not mistaken counter crystal give you around 25% change of counter. In Suikoden V counter crystal paired with fully upgrade counter skill make your counter change become 50%.
From what I remember, Suikoden is significantly shorter than the second game; I think S1 takes maybe 20-25 hours to finish, depending on whether you try to recruit all 108 stars, whereas S2's run-time can easily double that, especially if you decide to pursue most of the sidequests.
In all my time playing this game. I never once got the rune from the beastgirl. Just never grinded for it. Oh well lol I like to grind in the great forest before I take on the zombie dragon.
Lucajin I just heard something about Suikoden. I can't test it because I don't have the game but apparently walking in long straight lines on the overworld like you are going somewhere and know it encounters less enemies than just wondering taking a turn every few steps like you are lost does. Could be useful if that is true. However I heard it in a video list of x number of different hidden things games do so yeah I don't know if it is true but worth a test just incase you want to maybe encounter more or less enemies for reasons like x overworld encounter group can give you y item or z experience points and money or something.

it became longer since Suikoden 3

Man I can't wait for us to meet up with your dad again. "Hey dad, you left for two weeks and I became the leader of the rebel army what up"
explodingcrayon more like " hey uhhh dad ...well uhhh I may have become the leader of the rebellion but I left the house clean
Man, just watching you walk along the world map next to the coast... It's a really well detailed coastline!
Let's get down to business! To defeat! The empire!
Did they send Gremio? When I asked, for Pahn?
I enjoyed your suikoden 2 let’s play and I’m enjoying this let’s play as well
I don't think I used Luc in my S1 party until near the end of the game, when I needed a beastly magic user.
And I second the Kai recommendation; having him in my party got me through most of the game.
"Welcome to the Salty Spitoon, how tough are ya?"
"How tough am I? I made it through the eight episodes of sick Lucah to the light on the other side."
Lucah im colourblind and when you went to the tablet to view your army i literally couldn't see anything
I think what the design idea was meant to portray was that stone tablets have text carved into it, therefore the poor color choice. Assuming that is true, it makes logical sense however the text is difficult to read so it really is not justified.

Woot woot! Loving the series, still, lol.
Good to know your feeling better!
You didn't sound ill in the last episode - well done for a great job!
Here's my song for this playthrough
Do you wanna build an army
Do you have much room to play
We're recruiting everywhere
Everywhere we are recruiting everyday
These recruits are our buddies
Now we are building an army today
Do you wanna build an army
Yes I want to build an army
theyankeegal13 I approve this song :-) it works so well with the game as a whole
Is it just me or is Lucah developing a Canadian accent? It's kind of adorable.
Oniphire she definitely did. "Like woht?" and "aboot" lol
I love how much you go on about about the inventory system, sure it's bad but you make it sound like it's an old D&D game.
For a minute I thought we'd spend the entire episode just sleeping at Marie's inn. And I would have watched it because I like this LP that much! lol
I hope Lucah also plays Child of Light some day. It's such a beautiful and cute game! I'd love to hear her narrate it. :)
WOOOOOOOO ANOTHER SUIKODEN EPS... :D Don't worry about being ill Lucahjin, glad to see you're feeling better though.

Mighty J that and the first game is pretty light hearted compared to the sequel

I love the counter rune on Gremio. Then he can stay in the front row. And I love it when you get the rare drop of the Zombie Dragon and get a Lightning Rune! Yay!!!
I've only just got Antino I didn't even notice her text change because I was just grinding and staying at the castle because I'm cheap.
Poor Maas is obsolete before you even get him.
If you tried to leave the first screen, the game would loop you back to the beginning. This forest is a maze, one of the villagers tell you about it.
Honestly i used Antonio in battle alot,i love seeing his sprite in battle its so funny!
I find it kinda relaxing watching you do the inventory stuff. Maybe I'm just crazy?
This series made me go back and finish the Suikoden 2 series and pick up one and two for PSN, even though I have the disks
Yeah, I used Tir and Kai together in the same team a lot. Like you said, it was definitely useful with group encounters, not as much with single bosses.

I have a major beef with Sansuke! I've never ONCE succeeded with his special effect and I did get him right now like Lucah did.
technically, a doctor in the fantasy/medieval times will be very important and can serve as a strategist.
Need more of these episodes sooner. :D
i got antonio at like the finale of the game almost dude did not want to join me. Also I think I like this games castle more than Suikoden 2's in terms of aesthetic the music in the castle, not so much, tho it did grow on me with time.
Gotta catch em all suikomon!
If not mistaken counter crystal give you around 25% change of counter. In Suikoden V counter crystal paired with fully upgrade counter skill make your counter change become 50%.
She forgot the holy crystal! She. Would have dashed
Was this castle in Suikoden 5? It's been years since 5.
With weapon level up, does the limit of how much you can level up depend only on story progression?
Yes it does!
Hey Lucah? How long is this game compared to the sequel? Is it longer than Suikoden II or shorter?

RevolverLink
Oh really? Cool! I was wondering because we got people like Antonio waaaaay later in Suikoden II, especially with the castle.
Definitely shorter, this game has a lot less in terms of its filler, and the world isn't quite as big.
27:19 ish, Lucah i like hard pickles though. they're sour and delicious.
Man, I was so spoiled with Unite Attack on Suikoden 2 - SO THANKFUL when I got Kai!
LETS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS!!!
TO DEFEAT, THE IMPERIIIAAAALS!!!
I always found it interesting that Yamkoo was a playable character in 1, but not in 2.
In all my time playing this game. I never once got the rune from the beastgirl. Just never grinded for it. Oh well lol
I like to grind in the great forest before I take on the zombie dragon.
aw yeah
awees wheres no 10 =( i was so enjoying playing along with you
The Holly Boys need plushies
i wish these games were on a portable system, they look fun and a more of a...portable gamer
You can get them for the PSP!
lucahjin Is there a North American release for the PSP?
Lucah should play Danganronpa. If shes liking ace attorney she'll prolly love danganronpa!
how about no
Danganronpa is overrated.
Lucahjin should definitely play Persona 4/5
"I don't like Luc as much"
HOW THE FUCK ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH REESE!
:D
:D
D:~
Can you talk to the cat in Kaku? :3
We can do something with the cat later on :3
Yay! I look forward to it! (I bet Bagel does, too) =OwO=
Geeks ASSEMBLE!!!! YOU CAN PLAY IT REAL LIFE

Lucah, do you play this game on emulator ? if yes, can i know the emu version ?
Eh? But... I want Luc doe :'(
1455
I'd rather not see Luc in your party at all...
Why not?
WildKatGirl Not sure how to answer that without spoiling too much
