I burned through 2 starters at autozone and 3 at o'reillys until I finally took it to a shop and he told me he had to call a friend who works at Ford Company and he told him that it was a wire but he would not tell me exactly wtf the problem was because he wanted to charge me another $625.00 if it did it again. I changed everything else from the alternator, solenoid, to fuses but I wish I would have changed the wire that connects the ignition to the battery to the starter as it was very doable. but thats how they charge you by keeping you in the dark about simple shit!! I like to thank you Sir for this video and trying to help people because money isnt easy to come by for some of us fa real..take care and peace

1968 F250 FE360 My starter solenoid smoked one day and wouldn't engage starter.New solenoid and when I reconnected battery the starter stayed engaged while battery connected.I had to get a new relay and then all was well.Thanks for your info.Heck,even I can understand it
What will make it do that is a low battery if you’re cranking it and it does not start once the volts in the battery get too low. It will not let it disengage the solenoid because I’ve had it do the exact same thing on a GM and the solenoid is mounted on the starter on them.

I have a 70 chevy truck with the ford solenoid. My solenoid only has the s wire hooked up. When releasing the key back to the run position, it continues cranking. I have a coil cut off, so the engine wont start unless energized. By watching your vid, my thought is the ignition switch is the culprit...Any thoughts before spending cash on a new switch ?
This is very odd.. I have a 89 f250 with a 91 f150 engine inside basically same configuration as stock f250 engine when it comes to solenoid, but same exact issues thing is I just replaced the solenoid because of a different issue, this started recently after taking apart my steering wheel column tilt to fix and I put back together exactly the same. My solenoid only has one wire that clips onto the solenoid(the one you disconnected to diagnose the solenoid) and it still cranks with that off. Perhaps I got a defective one?
My 91 f150 did this tonight and I had to go find a wrench to get battery cable off before a meltdown , very exciting, glad to hear it's the solenoid I recently replaced the actuator in the steering column but was very careful while in there.
What about the other post, mine sparks and kills the engine. Starts and runs find until you hook the ignition wire to the Post . Ignition has been replaced.
Has the coil been replaced? Also inspect that wire and make sure its not rubbing against anything. Sometimes with the rubbing and the heat of the engine it can cut through the wire causing a short to ground. I would follow that ignition wire all the way and inspect it.
@@johnnyrodriguez2493 so being a GM it will have one but it will be located on top of the starter itself. This is on a Ford which on a Ford they liked putting these external solenoids. Let me know if this didn't help so I can continue to try to assist you
Got an 89 f-250 with the 460 and I have burned out 7 solenoids by now and one starter with this issue! Checked all wires for shorts or corrosion, I changed out the lock cylinder and pinion, ignition switch, new starter and solenoid and it started fine and ran for 3 days and the same thing happens at a clients house! Super embarrassing.. this has been an ongoing problem for 3 months now and I'm about ready to just let it burn all together lol. Just lost here now. Still working on finding the actual problem.
Jesus! Add a switch to interrupt the coil wire so your client can kill it there. Can also serve as a anti theft system. Lol But yes I can see how this would not be ideal.
@@edboyle9347 still not 100%. I found a bad ground wire hidden under the truck and changed that out a long with a new starter and so far so good. Been running good for about 2 months. Ground I'm guessing.

@@AndyHernandezLopez if the moment you connect the thin wire which would be your solenoid signal wire to energize the solenoid, then that wire must have power. I would then check into the ignition switch to see if it's no faulty and staying on at all times even in the off position.
You have a direct short somewhere. Something that may appear to be off is on. Maybe an actuated relay or a positive wire touching metal somewhere causing it ground and with that short present you will also have battery draw
Here’s my problem: i have a 1997 Ford F-250 power stroke diesel. The truck has been sitting awhile and i took the batteries out and had them charged up. But when i hook just one of them up the truck starts to crank on its own without even putting the key in the ignition. Got any ideas why?

2010 dodge Challenger cut off driving. I turned the key fob and let off starting spinning fast. I heard the starter spinning when it cutoff.

I have a 70 chevy truck with the ford solenoid. My solenoid only has the s wire hooked up. When releasing the key back to the run position, it continues cranking. This is good but for me I needed to disconnect the ignition switch fuse on my 2014 Chevy Silverado so it would stop running.

I replaced that starter solenoid and the starter itself and I still run in too that same issue

I just got a brand new solenoid and installed it and it wont stop cranking. Everything online says to replace it but it’s brand new out of the box
What car? I just replaced mine on a 1960 thunderbird before reviving it back to life after sitting for 6 months.

I had major sparks when I touched the battery. But nothing turned on. Lights off, radio off. There is nothing else on my old truck.

You may have this issue to where the hot automatically energizes the starter solenoid

Does the wire going to the s stud go to the alternator
Negative, the S stud comes from your ignition because thats the one that gets the power when you turn the key on.
Is the ignition wire the biggest out of the 3 on an 86 Chevrolet truck
Had this exact same issue. But I disconnected the negative cable. Not the positive. Same issue.
And you are definately right to remove the ground cable first
