The VW T2 camper van set 10279 had working steering which reminded me of the Model team sets of the 80s and 90s this is like Model team 2.0 with added suspension
I will just note that a classic defender does indeed have live axles whereas the new one has independent suspension all around. So both models are true to life
It’s called a high lift Jack to be exact, designed to be used in locations you can’t use a normal Jack or if your rig is too big.

Lego certainly are onto something with this Technic crossover: It adds functionality to a System build without sacrificing the looks, so it's a really attractive proposition for car fans in particular. I wonder if they can keep the same level of outside detail and fidelity on a different build, because this could be the start of a whole new line.
@@Unbrickme I think that car could be a Lancia Delta and that it has some type of gear box and that it was rc for 130 like the lego technic off road buggy.
I really like this set, but that price tag is scaring me off. This set would have easily been $200 if we still had the $150 cars. I think the DeLorean at $200 made Lego push the price to $240.
In a couple of years it will go on a discount. I've got a Camaro for 135+double points and a promo on the Lego website, and an Ecto-1 from Smyths for 150
This is probably my favourite Lego car of all time, and i have a lot of them, everything from speed champions to three of the big technic supercars. As a Brit, who loves cars, this is a must have. Ill probably have the classic v8 in it. Personally, i don't have the technic one, it isn't bad, but its a modern Land Rover, which i thought was a poor choice, however, i love this classic one. P.S. the suspension on the technic car is accurate to the irl modern Land Rover, but this live axel suspension is accurate to this age of land rover
Just recently picked this one up do you think it's possible to convert it into a fully motorized model with a technic inner chassis and Lego outer frame using the defender model itself merely as a shell
I think that the 40 dollars come from all the sand green parts that are a bit more expensive than normal Lego parts. Also great car!! I always loved the old land rover defender but in my opinion this set should cost $180 rather than $240. It is just too expensive for it's size compared to the Technic one.
No you can select the position of the steering wheel it while building it. In fact the instructions by default show to build the steering wheel on the right side, but it says in text in the instructions “choose where you want the steering wheel to be”
This set just blown my mind. I'm definitely planning to buy it (not immediately though on April, since I want to save my money) and motorize this car with LEGO Mindstorms 51515. This is also the first off-road vehicle in the Icons theme, maybe perhaps we could get a Jeep in the Icons theme? Also the LEGO Classic Land Rover Defender 90 is not even ready to travel to the ocean. It needs all of its accessories for off-roading before it can even travel to the ocean 9:24.
Thanks, but the Technic Defender is way superior. More pieces, more functions, HOG (and traditional) steering, bigger size, all while costing $90 (CAD) less!
I got mine direct from Lego, loved building it and it's an amazing model, really re-ignited my love of Lego. Goes nice with my real LandRover too. I had no interest in the technic version as I have no interest in the real car.
I would love this model but I have the technic land rover and I think having both of them is a bit wasteful, I would prefer each of my lego models to be a bit different from one antoher
Lego should have made a technic set of this instead of the icons set... and preferably in the same size as the sechnic landrover defender. It would be wpnderfull to have 2 similar in size landrover defenders next to eachother
It’s kind of sad that many Technic sets these days have less functionality than this one while looking worse. I’m not saying that Technic looks bad, it’s just that system looks better.
To me, the Technic version has a disappointing gearbox. The use of U-joints and the backwards gearing were IMO bad design choices. I've been a fan of appropriate combining of Technic and System elements; this looks like a good start.
Great review of this set, and that yellow part you built was a floor jack. This set looks fantastic, but unfortunately I can not justify the price for these set, I feel this set should be under 200. There are far too many great alternative brands that have unique and original models with equal to better brick quality for far less money. I still love Lego, but I'm far more conservative when buying there sets now.
Everyone in the chat acting like technic and system cross overs are new? LEGO has many many sets that include a plethora of technic internals and a healthy blend of system outer layers. Model Team ring a bell anyone? Cough MODEL TEAM cough
The system defender is muchhhhhh more value for money compared to the technic one . Why? Well, sand green is an extremely rare colour in lego and considering the fact that you can get so many of them in a 240 dollar set is definitely good .
I love all the stuff you are doing to beef up the channel, very entertaining. But I do think you are way too uncritical. The price is absurde and the thing was literally falling apart during the last shot lol. But thanks!
@@Unbrickme Let me repeat though, I LOVE all the new energy and action and humour you put into 're making' your channel, I am sure you will have good succes if you can keep it up! Consistency is the name of the game. But you are doing very well so far!
Nah, there are people who hate Technic (ahem, Tiago). Others, like me, want to enjoy our Technic in peace and keep the low-quality, badly-clutching System tiles off our cars. Look at those pieces, the car's exterior is falling apart. Icons Defender gets the best from the both systems, but there are issues. So yeah, I'm not against mixing Technic and System, it's how it should be for the sturdy structure and functions in Creator cars, but adding a lot of System into the Technic sets is still a no for me. I like the unfinished boxy look of Technic bricks. Don't want the models to be tiled off.
This is not true technical set. Disappointing this is normal now they are cutting corners and trying to save money and maximise profits . The second series of original lego technical car 8860 back in 1980 , 43 years ago that now sells for $1900 usd is way more advanced than this offering in 2023. They are cutting back on the engineering of models many are smaller today and not as engineered as the older technical sets were . Adults who grew up on the 8860 sets know what's happening to lego . Those older sets command massive dollars today because they were so good .
But that's the point. It's not a Technic set. That's what drives me away in those Creator cars. Too many parts are falling apart like in the blue VW camper. A display model that can't be driven around.
This is probably one of the greatest system-technic crossovers ever
Agreed!

the yellow accessory is a carjack so you can lift the car on the front right for example to change the wheel

I totally agreed! Next icons system car should have a drivetrain, and then maybe we could even get a transmission in a system car!
@@Unbrickme I think that car could be a Lancia Delta and that it has some type of gear box and that it was rc for 130 like the lego technic off road buggy.
I think it’s a cool idea how the steering can be on either side but it’s a very british car so i personally think it should belong on the right
The yellow tool is a representation of a hi lift jack, used for changing tyres or as a rudimentary hand winch.

The yellow thing is a jack, to jack the truck up when you have a flat tire!
10317 even shows the ladder frame during the build. So much attention to details!
I think the yellow tool is the car jack
Yep
Thanks!
It is
The yellow jack Is a jeep jack. Don’t see alot of people use them anymore
Thanks for letting me know
@@Unbrickme no problem. Thanks for making an amazing video. Can’t wait for you to review more sets.
This is most often called a Farm Jack. It is used often here in the southern USA.
It’s a high lift jack I have one in my defender 90. It’s not specifically for a jeep.
That intro is fire. Congrats on starting the manual gearbox driving lessons, btw! It's been a great time for me when I've been learning, enjoy!
perhaps the best review on youtube of what is a truly legendary set
Now we need a countach from the icons line
Hi Unbrickme! I don't like System sets so much but I definitely buy this one because it is incredible! Nice content as usual!

Does it leave oil stains?
It looks so good. I also like thecolour alot more than on the technic version (I have them both), I like to keep my clean without any accessories
It’s such an iconic 4x4 and Lego did an amazing job recreating so it’s a must have for me. I put in my order this morning! Nice review thanks.
The independent suspension is on the new (technic) model as in the real model. The old one has serious off road suspension.

Did you ever find out what the strange yellow tool is?
Its an off-road jack
High lift jack
I don't see any lateral stabilization of the live axles like a Panhard rod or a Watts link. Did I miss something?
You didn’t miss anything, in fact, this car does have a tendency to move side to side on the live axles
@@Unbrickme But only very slightly.
Do they change the position of the drivers seat depending on what region the set is sold in?
No you can select the position of the steering wheel it while building it. In fact the instructions by default show to build the steering wheel on the right side, but it says in text in the instructions “choose where you want the steering wheel to be”
@@Unbrickme Oh cool
I hope they can make more sets that have a great system brick exterior while having a complex and practical workings inside using technic
Worth noting that both 42110 and 10317 introduced new fender elements 😂
I thought Lego aren't allowed to make vehicles used in the military? 🤔
absolutely gorgeous. this is a must get for me
they should have connected the front bumper to the chassis, maybe using some technic pieces. it would have been much more realistic.

Why is it left hand drive, its a British car.
Because you can put the steering wheel on either side while building. I just put mine on the left

Wow! I really like the setting! Seashore and Unbrickme in a Land Rover(?) with sunglasses. Nice :)
