    Angie I love watching your videos. I also have a son with down syndrome. He is now 20. I pulled him out of public school half way through 5th grade and began the homeschool journey. It wasn't easy but rewarding in the end. We tried so many different curriculums. Math was always hard. I felt like we would go 2 steps forward 3 steps back. Never really found one that worked perfectly for him. But I wanted to let you know I found bits and pieces of reading and spelling I liked. We started with sing spell read and write. He loves to learn by singing and her concepts to music. Also spelling u see Level A was great for sound recognition and writing.. I never felt like he understood all of our crazy English rules so I didn't push them, but he would memorize by the way a word would look.. We also liked explode the code. For online help he loved Reading Eggs and we would do Math eggs too. He learned a lot from this program.
    Luke burned out around 17 / 18 and school became a major battle . Now we focus on life skills. I know in my heart he received more with one on one teaching than he would have in school. All of Luke's siblings are older and out of the house so he didn't have the benefit of seeing his siblings learn. Rosie will learn so much just watching her brothers and sisters. I am looking forward to seeing your video about what works with Rosie . I would love to see how your school day is played out for her. Your doing great job!
    Blessings
    Christine

    I never thought I would homeschool! I saw people keep their kids home from school rather than home school! I had a close friend who started homeschooling her three children. By the time my daughter was in the 8 th grade looking like a fish out of water; my husband and I took her out of public school and my friend loaned and gave us curriculum for homeschooling! Audrey absolutely soared!! She is now 38 years young with children who she might be homeschooling too. Thank you Angela!! You are the best! Love a blessed Mom and Grandma! 🥰😍

    Omg, you’re so right about the pressure when you can’t see the child as having a special need on the outside, the pressure is so great! I am definitely starting homeschooling for my 10 year old daughter on the spectrum. I’m so tired of the public school system teaching subjects and using strategies that are mainstream and not individualized for the child. They just keep moving on whether the child masters the foundations or not. It’s setting them up for failure and feeling like they’re not good enough. It’s awful! So glad I stumbled upon your channel and thanks for all the information!

    Dyslexic students are perfectly capable of everything anyone else is they are often incredibly intelligent but struggle to write it down well often if you ask the student to explain the concept verbally they can do it . Dyslexic students also tend to learn better with practical hands on teaching . Something I found useful in the beginning of learning language is count the letters in the word it allows the child to count on their fingers checking if they added an extra letter or left one out it can be very helpful- A. We love All About Reading. We do one concept a week. We take our time and we do a lot of repetition. This is also helpful if your child is dyslexic. But we don’t go fast through it because we want it to stick! I highly recommend All About Reading. All About y is going well for us also.
    And just a note; AAR works well for my 3rd grade kid with a very short attention span. We do the one lesson over 4/5days then we read the related story over 4/5 days. We do a lot of review each day and break down the review reading pages over a few days and this is just enough to keep their attention, not to mention the games. They are a life saver! Really do highly recommend AAR!

    I love watching your videos! You present things in a way that speaks to me. Lol.
    Just wanted to put this out there, since you said you’re thinking about using Abeka’s online program. We used all Abeka last year with the videos and it did NOT work for us. The video lessons take so much longer than if I just taught it myself. The classroom setting is a neat idea, but one reason we homeschool is to get through subjects faster so we have extra time to enjoy our hobbies. Abeka video courses takes away that freedom, in my opinion. I’ve heard lots of positive things about Abeka, but it most definitely did not work for us. My son was in tears during the math every day. My daughter would get very distracted because the teacher wasn’t very interesting.
    Thanks for all you do for us homeschool moms. I’m also really enjoying your video about your clothes. I’ve order some of the sweaters and love them!
    God bless you and your family.

      At the Christian preschool, where I teach, we use Abeka curriculum, and it is very rigorous. Some students cannot handle all of the learning pages, so I really try to incorporate more hands-on approach to learning letters and sounds. For instance, I will use Play-Doh and popsicle sticks, and even shaving cream right on the desk to have them make their letters. the secret stories better alphabet is incredible for teaching, the letters and their sounds and special “secret stories” explaining hunk and chunks/blending, etc.
      Love Orton Gillingham approach as well, and so much of the research that has gone into the science of reading for children. Phonemic awareness and being able to hear the sound, as they see, the letter is so much more important, in my opinion than so many pages of work material.

    My son used IXL in public school, last year for fourth grade, and it’s actually one of the many reasons we pulled him out of public school. He did NOT do well with IXL, they relied heavily on it and had no alternatives for the students that didn’t respond well to it. I truly hope it works well for you, definitely wasn’t for us, but that’s the beauty of homeschooling, you get to make those choices. ❤

    So Abeka is a wonderful curriculum…however it’s not at all something I would recommend unless you child is super advanced. Abeka tends to be very far ahead of what you would normally have in a specific grade level. When we pulled our oldest out of public school that’s the curriculum we chose…she just literally struggled the entire year it was terrible. Also like you said it’s not at ALL flexible! There are no ‘sick days’ or ‘field trip’ days or else it’s a nightmare to try to catch up…We now use ACE for all 4 kids and it’s been amazing. Of course it also has its flaws and we will change things up a bit next year. But I definitely just wouldn’t recommend Abeka unless you have a ton of money, want a strict school schedule and basically have started from kindergarten or have a very advanced student.

    This is our third year using Lexi core 5 in our homeschool. It's particularly helpful for kids with dyslexia. Obviously we love it or I wouldn't be mentioning it ;)
    Edit to add, we are also big fans of All About Reading and use it in our homeschool. We've been homeschooling for about 12 years now. Have 2 highschool graduates. Why I love the relatively new addition of Lexia Core 5 to our homeschool curriculum is that you can do as little or as much as you want throughout the week. It tracks very specific skills your student has accomplished. It's extremely engaging and there is no prep for the parents / teacher.

      @@homeschoollifemom yes. We pay a yearly fee for it. A good friend who actually has 5 kids, all with dyslexia introduced me to it. It has taken an enormous load off my shoulders. I still love and use All About Reading but Lexia has become our core curriculum.

      @@matanotofeden999 is it just for reading or other subjects as well? I’m using AAR for my dyslexic child but we don’t love it. 🙈 unpopular I know.

    • @matanotofeden999
      @matanotofeden999 ปีที่แล้ว

      AAR has been great for our slightly struggling reader, but for our child with significant dyslexia, Lexia Core 5 really made all the difference and to be honest, dyslexia or no dyslexia, all of our kids greatly benefit from Lexia Core 5. Additionally, in the beginning, we also used the first 2 levels of the Barton Method, so that's another option to look into. The Barton Method does the job very effectively as far as helping the child with dyslexia to crack the code of reading, it's just very dry. Besides for the usual reading and decoding, Lexia also covers spelling, reading comprehension, pretty much all things language arts except for writing.

    We have found the Simply Math to be way longer and advanced then their previous version. We have loved TGTB math until this year when we used the Simply version for the first time. It’s anything but simple! Such long lessons without that hands on, multi-sensory learning approach that we loved so much with their old version. I’m going to have to eat words and switch curriculum cause I’m not making my kids do math every day for a whole school year that makes them cry.

    Love All About Reading and All About Spelling! I really liked Teaching Textbooks for a couple years but unfortunately in VA we have end of year testing and I didn't feel they were taught enough for the testing 😞 We're trying Monarch online for my three older kids for math and a few other subjects...... I'm not sure if it's going to work out though.
    We used IXL over the summer for math and the kids liked it. It was affordable too.

    • @cnew299
      @cnew299 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessicaladd85 They do eventually have sentences they write independently but it's more like you say the sentence, they repeat the sentence back to you, and then correctly write the sentence. You check the sentence for spelling errors, capitalization, punctuation, and neatness. I hope that helps to answer your question.

    Checking out IXL right now. I didn't watch anybody else's curriculum videos this year. I am getting my 7th kid on Saturday. You are my go to for ideas on how to homeschool all these different needs. Just a friendly piece of info from an Abeka mom. I used Abeka as a child in private school, and I use it for math for my kids now. I have a ton of kids, we have special needs and therapy and all the things. Abeka is a lot. I wouldn't touch Abeka's language arts ever again! It was dreadful! Abeka math is exactly like tgtb math without the fun. You will have no transition at all. We do video lessons for our boys (3 of them all in 3rd grade) with the workbook and test and speed drills book. They all like it. In this group I have 1 very young 3rd grade boy who is typically developing and highly motivated, 1 very young 4th grader who has adhd and works slowly, and 1 old 4th grader (Oct birthday) who will be adopted and joining our hs in Nov. My adhd kid is really good at math and still struggles. I know you are the research queen, and you know what's best for your family. Just a friendly heads up, Abeka can be more work than it's made out to be.

      We use it and it's not too much for us. So I think it depends on the child. There will be gaps no matter what curriculum you use. This happens in public school also. You can find all kinds of resources online to check on your child's progress if your concerned. There are books showing what should be learned at each age.

    Not trying to be a jerk at all, but if you have several kids needing attention, therapies, tutoring, and then are doing a lot of online classes…. Why not just send them to regular school? They do all that there. Regular school and then add in a Bible curriculum or something

      In theory they help children with special needs. In theory. In reality, the public school system is severely lacking and fails children with learning disabilities frequently. My five year old was bullied by his teachers because he has ADHD and behaved differently than the other kids. Sending your kids to public school doesn’t guarantee they will get the help they need and may actually squash any love for learning they did have.

    • @tahirasbs
      @tahirasbs ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Public school over all is failing all students. For some it works but the system as a whole is very broken. For most families school is first and foremost a "free" babysitter and may have little to do with true education. For most parents who homeschool the sacrifice of homeschooling, even multiple kids, is worth the sacrifice.

    • @nicolentwiga7049

      I know many moms who have had to FIGHT the public school system to get the referrals, ieps, etc that they need. Then the kids are "labeled". Special needs because this identity in public school. We have a few families in our co-op that said their special needs kiddos did better after coming home, both academically and socially.

      Thank you all for your perspectives! I am familiar with the public school system in New York State, although I have heard it is one of the best. Maybe other states are much worse than I have experienced. I am also not super familiar with individual special needs, except that they do usually receive 1:1 or 1:4 attention during the day. But you don’t even need to send them all the way to public school, send them to a private school. As far as baby sitting, if you’re doing online classes then you’re using the computer for a baby sitter as much as you’re using a teacher for a baby sitter. Seems like I would want my kids with other children

    I'm a mom of three and all three have disabilities (physical, mental, learning) and I totally understand what you are saying. Because of this, I homeschool two of them and send one to a small private school. Praying you find the best fit for your son!
    We also use IXL and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love that it helps with very specific skills. But, I don't like that if they get an answer correct, they only move up a few percent, but if they get it wrong they are knocked way back. It can be very discouraging for kids... And parents🫤

So I use timing for him, sometimes I ask him to stop after doing certain numbers of questions, and this as resulted in him wanting to push to the end when he sees that he is almost at 11 percent smart score
