- So I bought a Chinese BS-0 Semi Universal Dividing Head from Ebay. The dividing head was a little over $360 Australian so I thought I would buy one for my small home machine shop and pull it apart for a look inside.
This is part two, making a few parts and replacing the main bearing.
I made a 3 part series of what I found.

I just got a Holtzmann BF 500 mill, it's also from China, it's actually pretty well made but oh-boy it was dirty inside, grid, muck everywhere and small things like the key and not finished surfaces was needed to be addressed, I had it apart and cleaned and fixed these things it took a lot of time but it was fun and now I know my mill and I have a good clean and precise mill, I learned from your videos that you shall not be afraid to take something apart, you might learn something.
They must just bang them together in such a hurry, no time to clean them up. They are probably paid by piece work.
Interesting to hear your comments on the BS-O dividing head regarding the state of the key. I bought a Vertex BS-O from the estate of a deceased friend, to the best of my knowledge he never used it as it was still covered with the factory grease. When i came to use it i was unable to take out the backlash, on investigation i found the key on the shaft was 3/16" in a 5mm keyway, it appeared to have been given a couple of smacks with a punch to spread it to fit ! this was how it came from the factory. I live in southern England and the name on the product was Vertex. Let the buyer beware.
Just incredible isnt it, Should be good now though.
Mine got a quick strip down, clean and oil tonight. I didn't pull anything off the main shaft, perhaps next time.
Lots of black stuff on the inside surfaces now replaced with clean oil.
You will be glad you did.
@@BundyBearsShed I cut my first steel gear today (successfully cut). Much easier to spin it so thanks again for these videos.
That lathe certainly works nice!
Yes it does!
Good vid lance lathe looks great rubber mat on the head stock help saves the paint
Thanks 👍
Ahha making chips on the new lathe. Looking good. First comment on here was Eleen with wanna be friends. I see this wanna be friends thing all over the place. I wonder what sort of scam that is.
G Day Harrold, Yeah I have blocked her now and Ghost whoever that is. Im not sure what they are up to either and I watched a few videos on them
G'day Lance that's the exact oil that I use in my oil pots and oiling the mill and lathe. Speaking of lathes that's a beauty you have got and I'll ask you were you got the 6jaw it's the same size as my new lathe. Good video mate John
Thanks 👍 I got the 6 jaw from E Bay, I love it best chuck I have owned but I did have to strip and clean it.
Lathe looks good. What model did you get ?
Hare and Forbes AL960B Im liking it.
I really do appreciate the breakdown of the dividing head but it is quite painful watching u machine. Your order of operations very interesting to say the least. U can always tell hobbyist from a production machinist
Sorry about that, just a tractor bloke really.
