Fished Lanier yesterday. Visibility seemed to be about 5 feet or better. Spots weren't biting much. What we caught was in water no more than 12 feet. They would not chase crankbaits, swimbaits or come up for topwater lures. All fish were caught on soft plastics, on the bottom. We did mark fish twice in 30-40 feet of water. We enjoy your no nonsense approach to teaching, Randy.
Usually they talk about thermocline in the fall of the year.. Never thought too much about it in the summer.. interesting Thanks Randy.. The Frye Guy..
Hey Randy good video you explained some things I didn't know about the thermocline thanks for your time and effort and teaching us to be a better angler. I hope your dad is feeling better every day hey I keep asking you where you want me to send the check to , outstanding information Randy god bless you and your family your pal fisherman
Here in the north east the species of fish that live in the lake are a pretty good indicator if there is oxygen depletion in deep water. Lake Trout and smelt generally mean that there is Oxygen in deeper water than you would ever fish for bass.
More good information, I usually never give the thermocline a second thought. How about a video on sun exposure and how you handle it. I would have guessed a guy who spent a ton of time on a lake would have a ruddy complexion, yet you don’t, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It’s brutal out there and skin cancer is no laughing matter.
At 81 degrees water starts losing it's ability to hold oxygen. Lower Lake out of current water water will be cooler and have more oxygen as you go deeper. The point the water stratification or layers out is the thermocline. Heating of the sun does not happen below this point. Think dead zone below. Top of thermocline is coolest water with best oxygen. 10 am - 2 pm is the magic time. Early an late not as good as bass will move up structure or scatter. Wind blowing in can pile water an lower thermocline on one side. Wind blowing out can raise thermocline a few feet. The less movement in water the more defined thermocline will be. The old paper graphs made this easier to teach. Hot an miserable but like loading fire wood it's easier when you back up to a stack. Easiest fishing of the year during mid July. First of August everything changes for a new year. Jet skis an ski boats swarming close is no problem at will jig your spoon while you sit still and relax. Best time of the year.
I have always thought where I fish, TVA lakes - Chick and Watts Bar that have some current pretty much always, that the thermocline doesn't form. Is this correct?
Hope your Dad is progressing well. I’m not very “techy” but Jonny has a great explanation of how to use 2D or down imaging to find the thermocline. I rarely fish deep so it has been a non-issue for me. Still always fun to learn the science of why’s & how’s. Thanks Randy. Here’s the link to Jonny’s video: th-cam.com/video/HaDXL9yEcmU/w-d-xo.html

The thermocline is your friend. It makes it easier for me, anyway to locate offshore fish.
Thank you! Praying that your father recovers quickly.
Thanks Randy. I don’t get to fish deep water much, but I appreciate this lesson. I hope I get to use this guidance soon.
Great info, much appreciated
Prayers for your father.
I've never mastered finding the thermocline or using it to improve my fishing so thanks for the tips

Randy, you mentioned spy baits. I would appreciate your insight on fishing this lure. I have a few baits and my success rate has been slim.

Randy I can’t get the video to play for some reason
How in the world did I learn all this stuff Holy crap lol
Hope your father is doing ok
Seems the thermocline just doesn't set up well when there's current in the main lake. Is that true, or just me?
Very true. Must be out of current.
In other words, you don't know anymore about it than we do!
Just go up shallow to the back of the creeks and throw a buzzbait and flip a jig or texas rig. Theres no thermacline back there. Lol.
I fish some ponds that I bet have a thermocline. I can definitely see how this would affect fishing.
Me I go shallow
Get some rest Randy! All lakes don't have a thermocline do they?
I thought thermocline was a heated lazy boy.
