Is Antivirus Worth It?

  • To many advanced users, Antivirus IS worthless. That is because it uses system resources and provides more annoyances than benefits. However, for many users it is required as they will not know what is a virus or not.

    - Google bought VirusTotal several years ago, so keep that in mind. Don't create an account, or use it in a sandboxed VM/profile or whatever to prevent Google from tracking what files you have.
    - Some companies will specifically tell antivirus vendors to add files they don't like even if they aren't malware.
    - Gotta love that bit about how individual devs get flagged as malware while corporations can pay to get a pass. 😒

Great video, Chris! Something else to keep in mind is to check for any pre-installed antivirus bloatware when buying a new computer.
I bought my laptop 7 years ago (I didn't switch to Linux yet back then). As soon as I bought it, I installed ESET Nod32 Antivirus, which slowed things to a crawl and made the laptop completely unusable. It took me 2 factory-resets before I realized that HP was bundling in some McAfee garbage with the laptop, and it was running in the background without any indication (no tray icon or anything). Removing that and leaving ESET's Nod32 Antivirus only solved the problem.

That would technicality be malware vs virus. Malware can lead someone to downloading a virus that causes true damage. However Malware is localized and just annoying to possibly yes the point of wanting to and someone’s at least temporarily pulling the plug. As to where a virus is replicating across media back in the day and more commonly in recent days across a local network, and the web if infected servers are accessed. There’s more details but that’s the nut shell.

I'll second the recommendation for NOD32. NOD32 is the chad AV, if you really need to get a paid one... I've been using and recommending it (when necessary) for *years*. Their Smart Security suite used to be really good (was a breeze to manage client machines with the server software)... but it's gone the way of McAfee and Norton in the last decade. Also... Getting a code-signing cert is a total pain in the ass, I will agree... I think it took about a month or two the last time I needed one, and that was going through internal procurement for a very large tech company... it was also obscenely expensive, which made for a tough conversation when we presented our client with the bill for it. 😂

Either way I always have internet disconnected, make sure i Windows firewall everything that file installs and have glasswire firewall making programs ask to connect. I'm using Avast free on Windows 7. Avast is running in silent mode and there are no popups. I doubt that paid antivirus isn't selling you out just the same as the free version. Information is the currency and software is the vehicle used to acquire it. By that analogy Windows 10 would stop sending telemetry to Microsoft once it was activated.

I agree with you, but I also break some of your rules. I run Malwarebytes (legacy lifetime license, manual scans) along with NOD32, and best of all TinyWall as a whitelist firewall, I also use multiple ad/malware/cookie blockers/detectors, and I have an ever increasing list of permanently blocked addresses simply in my host file. They all do different things for me (yes, I'm a manual update guy - something often causes incompatibility or has a new exploit in it). If I was just a gamer, Windows Defender would be fine (and it's what I recommend to most), but I do too much work on my computer to risk trusting MS with everything (yes, I realise the irony of the risk potential by giving this much access/trust to other companies/people to my systems).

Well, it honestly depends on what you do on the internet and how paranoid you are. If you like downloading stuff (not just programs, but stuff like game mods too) and visiting random sites to search for whatever then I do recommend an AV, or atleast Malwarebytes or something for on-demand scanning. I'd never trust Defender with keeping my PC 100% secure as it's not good enough for that imo. (I even found it turned off once for no apparent reason, even with tamper protection on. Meh)

Many people find that Microsoft Defender noticably slows down their computers. If it doesn't, it's a good option, but if it does it makes sense to replace it with something lighter. Kaspersky Security Cloud is no longer supported and has been replaced by Kaspersky Free Antivirus, which has similar functionality. While Kaspersky is an excellent antivirus and there are aren't actually any privacy issues with it, and no, there are no security issues with using it, on low end computers it may cause slowdowns. AVG and Avast (both are the same product under different names these days), have free versions which are fairly light. You can get easily rid of the advertising in them. If you run the uninstaller, it will give you the option to keep using the product, but without ads. If you have a low end system and need something that is exceptionally light, ESET, which you recommended, is an excellent option.

  • @phrtao

If you have to use Windows and Windows only software I would suggest that users be careful what they do on those machines. This is the best way to avoid viruses. I remember 20 or 25 years ago people were crazy about Virus scanning but Windows was so insecure that computers still got viruses. Mainly things like browser scripts or users installing software from all sorts of dubious sources.
The main rules on Windows must be:
    Don't install software (get someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you);
Be careful what you click on (if in doubt don't click it)
If anything asks for authorization or wants to install something don't allow it.
I have similar concerns about firewalls - they used to be a popular solution to computer security as well.

I stick with ESET NOD32 on my windows systems, it just stays out of the way and does it's thing and I've used it for 15 years. The irony with AV products is that the longer and better you get with computing as a whole the less you tend to lean on AV software because you are just more diligent. That said I still renew my ESET subscription annually for my Windows systems.

Back in the Windows 7 days I used ADWCleaner coupled with CCleaner and Windows Defender. These probably suck now but they worked like a charm back then. I would just uninstall the program when I was done scanning. Nowadays I don't really use Windows (Dual boot for occasional games / School programs that don't work on Linux) so my machines are pretty clean. I just use Windows Defender.

I used free Avira for years. When I started using it, it was generally good.
Now it's just bundled with bloat and annoying pop ups that you can't disable. So just use Defender when I'm using Windoz. Other than that, I'm on Linux and generally don't need antivirus.
I bought a new laptop not long back that came bundled with Norton Antivirus (probably the 30 day demo). Obviously I uninstalled it and just set Defender to run. But this particular laptop (even though it's pretty fast) likes to freeze every so often running Windows 10 (like if you're moving files). I've got a feeling there's some fragments of Norton left (which I'll have to scan the registry). None of these issues running Linux though!

I got complacent and got hit with the MCcrash Trojan while installing a Kodi build. It was embedded in a Python script in one of the dependencies for the build and was in a "Shadow Copy" of Kodi but I couldn't find a shadow copy or know how to do that. I was using windows defender and no AV program. Defender flagged it and I had defender remove it but it apparently didn't. I had to buy a new Nvme to replace the one my Win10 OS was on. Is there a way to purge this Trojan from the Nvme? I can't use it as it is. I can't reformat it or access anything on it. Would Revo uninstaller have removed the Kodi Shadow Copy if I had used it to nuke the Kodi build?
I will toss it if necessary but I would prefer to find a way to purge it and reuse it or recover the data. I have the new Nvme installed and reinstalled Win10 and am sorting that out. I haven't installed any other drives that were in the PC until I'm sure they aren't infected also. So that's my sad tale of woe. I plan to try the 30 day free trial of ESET AV per your advice and see what I think of that. Thanks for the video. Your one of my "go to guys" for this stuff. Thanks for the debloat script also! 🙂
