As someone who started full time cashiering at Walmart as a first job at 19 I feel that. Then transferred to online Pickup so customers could yell at me from the comfort of their car 😭. Ever give Jamie Hatfields order to Judy Hatfield in a huge rush and then Jamie shows up to get her 200 dollars in groceries? Worst experience of my life

i'm a busser, not even a waiter, and ive cried many times because of customers. i work for a very fancy restaurant which means the guests are either extremely nice or horrible. i once had a table of middle aged men ask me to pour their wine, there was several bottles and i didn't know which one. (i was 16). he told me by name, how was i supposed to know what bottle that was??? he started laughing at me and i was so embarrassed. i told him "sorry, i'm only 16" and they started mocking me and laughing. genuinely felt like a dream, how is that funny???? i took a break for 15 mins and my dad was the bartender at the time, he was super mad.

I was a waiter for 8 years. People can get downright terrible, but I choose to focus on the funny ones:
One restaurant I worked at had lime wedges on the tables (idk why) and this guy squeezed like 3 into his water. Halfway through the meal he asks me for more green lemons for his water and I asked do you mean limes and he just responded "No, I don't like limes. Just more green lemons please"
Another woman started crying and told me that I had ruined her life because her chicken sandwich was bland. Keep in mind she took all the ingredients off except for chicken and cheese
I had one man throw a temper tantrum because we didn't have an adult chicken tender dish on the menu
When I worked at a whiskey bar we had a little rosemary plant up front and somebody put a little sign on it that said "whiskey tree in training" as something cute. Then this guy at my table starts explaining how whiskey is made from those trees to the other people at his table. I thought he was just trolling them until he asked me for whiskey made with a sprig of pine. I laughed and he looked confused. He legitimately made up that whiskey was made from trees to sound smart and then bought his own bullshit. When I explained how whiskey was actually made to the table, he got really mad and demanded that they go somewhere else since I was lying. The other people at the table just clowned on him until he left all by himself yelling that I was a fucking idiot. I couldn't stop laughing, I'm surprised he didn't punch me in the face
My favorite was a woman who asked me where the lobster rolls were on the menu. I told her that we don't serve lobster rolls and suggested she might be thinking of another dish we had. Nope, she was adamant that we used to have lobster rolls. I told her that we've never had lobster rolls and she said we must have had them before I worked there and wanted me to ask the chef if he could make them again for her. I told her that I opened the restaurant and in the entire 2 years it had been open not a single piece of shellfish had been brought into the restaurant. Her response: "Well maybe the chef would be able to whip some up for us!" At that point I just told her I'd ask, went into the back, took a long drag off my vape, and came back and told her the chef said he was out of the dough

Ooh! And a fun one was when I worked as a bartender at a distillery and this guy with American flag chubbies shorts came in and ordered our vodka on the rocks. He took a sip and said "This is shit. What's it made of." I told him it was made from corn and he said that's why it tasted like shit. He then asked if we had any good vodka like Tito's. I explained to him that no, we don't carry any other distillery's vodka and that Tito's is also made from corn. He told me I didn't know what I was talking about and then tried to hit on a couple of women who told him to fuck off. He got mad and cae back to tell me that we owed him a bottle of whiskey for free since the vodka was bad. I told him I would, but it's made from corn too so it's too shit for him. He knocked over a trashcan and stormed out angry. This was 5:30 on a Thursday.

This! Was having a shit shift and ended up leaving crying because a table complained I wasn’t serving them because I went in the back to write the sidework chart. This took a maximum of 5 minutes and I filled their drinks to the top right before I left. I had also just brought their food out. Came back to them at the bar calling me a shit waiter. My manager comped their meal and basically told me I needed to be more attentive. Frustrated, I checked the time they had been there as they claimed they waited 30 minutes for a refill. They had been in the restaurant for a total of 35 minutes. That includes the time it took for their food to come out. Customer is always right despite facts. Customers can kma.

Some people just genuinely do not understand what workers in customer service go through. I’m a pharmacy tech and the way I’m treated by many of my customers is downright disgusting. I had a customer tell me yesterday, when I was explaining our situation and how behind we were and GENUINELY trying to give him options and ideas on how to fix the issue he just told me “sounds like a bunch of excuses.” And wouldn’t let me explain to him that if he drove 5 minutes over to the other location that they’d be able to finish the prescription for him in literal minutes. Like all I am ever trying to do is help the customers, but all I get in return is screaming. Genuine screaming. It’s not my fault, no I cannot fix it or I would. I know prescriptions are necessary, but I give the options I can and they refuse to accept them and continue to try to force me to do it. I had customers last night trying to force us to stay open late for them and when we said no we need to go home one said “well you guys are paid by the hour so you clock out when you’re done so why can’t you do it” like??? I've worked in restaurants and I've never seen that happen, so these people are just making all kinds of weird assumptions because they've clearly never worked in food service. Second, what bothers me the most about this story is the assumption so many customers have that if your server makes a mistake it is a personal slight against you. Like, your waiter is interacting with so many people and serving so many dishes a day. Believe it or not, yes they sometimes DO make mistakes and yeah sometimes they DO lie "to cover their ass", or more accurately because they don't feel like getting berated by a stranger today. I wish people would realize that if your food is late, your waiter most likely does feel bad and is probably stressing about it even more than you are, but that does not mean yelling at them and accusing them of trying to personally inconvenience you will solve anything.

People would still try to order breakfast all the damn time but like… none of that stuff is mise en place’d so you’re kind of SOL. What irritated me the most was this one time we made an exception for this big foodie “influencer” who desperately wanted our French toast even though it was past breakfast. Our manager made us make it and the whole kitchen was so annoyed the entire time because we had to keep going into the walk in to grab ingredients that were already wrapped up and put away. A bit hard when the restaurant you work at is so busy they would average $30,000 in sales a day.

I was a server for a time. The system we used was weird and only the main server could order for that table bc each server had an ID number and you could only access the table thru the #. My advice is to never order from a server other than ur main unless u want ketchup or something bc I can almost guarantee that if server B doesn’t find A in less than 30 seconds, ur order isn’t getting put in the system lol. And when B bumps into A like 30 mins later, they’re like “oh shit [insert table] wanted [insert dish]”

Today my wife and I went to a restaurant. We don't know what went wrong exactly, but it took an hour for our food to be ready. The waitress kept apologizing and saying she didn't know why our food was taking so long. Eventually she came over and said the manager was giving us a free dessert. It was the longest I'd ever waited for food at a restaurant. I left the waitress a generous tip because it wasn't her fault and she was so nice.

The funny thing is these scenarios happen all the time, because people are human and do human things. As a server, I think they were right for canceling the order. What they didn’t do was ask the waiter about the item the whole hour they had been waiting. The primary server probably assumed the secondary server put in the order. The lesson of all of this is, posting online is stupid.

Why would the primary server think the secondary server put in the order? Would the primary server have already put in their order before? one girl that I served with would do this until management found out and basically went up to her table while she was there and scolded her for lying to customers and then turned around and offered the table their food on the house. I'm assuming you're mentioning it with small stuff that doesn't really make a difference for the restaurant in the long run but if you have strict managers who value profits over the servers then it might really come back to bite you in the future if the customers make it a point to bring up when managers do their floor rounds.

yes!! servers have sections here in the majority of restaurants in the US and it's really not the other server's job to take an order from outside their section. the nice ones would make it a point to communicate it with the original server but you can imagine how messy that could get in high stress busy shifts lol

Op sounds like shes never worked in a kitchen. What happened was she ordered a weird thing.
The server (trying to hedge bets on being stretched thin between tables by offering to accommodate. A tactic to save tips when understaffed. Essentially kicking the can down the road to the cooks.) probably tried to put the order in but it either was confusing for the computer system to do so the ticket printed weird. They then probably tried to call an audible to the cooks to explain the ticket or they got flagged down by another customer & they forgot to communicate to the cooks.
The cooks then either saw the ticket & didnt understand it or pushed it down the line of importance bc it would require an extra trip off the line to collect the ingredients during a rush.
The server then kept collecting orders from the window & dishing them out so the kitchen window didnt get bogged down with orders. Only to remember to check on Ops order when they flagged the server down to ask. The server then went to ask the cooks an eta.
The cooks then either finally got clarification on the weird ticket only then beginning the order (worst case). Or the cooks were only then getting an opportunity to collect the ingredients/ boil water (something poached maybe). Making the eta 20min. (Most cooks know an exact but an eta like that for something thats been waiting in most restaurants during a rush means they're in the weeds).
Server B doesnt matter. The Ops table probably wasnt in their zone so asking them was essentially a bet on server Bs ability to remember to bring the appetizer. The only way this could effect order A with server A is if that meant the cooks took it as an opportunity to push the annoying order down in the order window bc they didnt want to hear Op complain that the entree came before or at the same time as the appetizers. Which honestly is probably exactly what happened.
So two things could be: 1 the server failed to communicate properly. 2 the cooks triaged yr order to a lower priority bc it required leaving a busy station. The additional order further complicating things.
So in one sense yes mistakes were made by the staff. Odds are low the order will be taken out of the servers pay. Thats a weird myth unless its catering to the uber rich. kitchens account for a certain amount of food waste so unless its a major goof nobody cares.
On the other hand all of this could have been avoided had Op taken a peek at how busy the restaurant was before they ordered something off menu. Doublely if they had a consept of how a kitchen works & ordered the appetizers when they placed their order with server A.
So the fault goes both ways but ties always go to the service staff bc most deals made with them are made under duress of service. They gotta be nice & say yes or a customer might go off on them with some weird power trip at any moment. Which could mean they lose their job over something as stupid as a splenda.
Op can feel any type of way she wants about it but taking it out on the staff is never okay. Servers know when theyre fucking up. If Op is feeling insensed that the server doesnt care enough about her business know that they do care bc they dont get her tip & the cooks are probably mad at them. She can just exit gracefully with an "hey im sorry but i dont have time to wait can i get my check" pay her due & leave. She doesnt have to make them pay extra for her feelings. Thats business.

As a current retail worker I relate to nick saying he'd give the kid the pizza anyway to avoid the awkwardness. It's so easy to be taken advantage of by someone but if it avoids awkwardness to give them the sale price they're arguing about when it doesn't ring up that price for example I'll just give them the sale price and lose Walmart a few bucks because at the end of the day, minimum wage is not enough money to get shit on over 2 dollar off jalapeño poppers. It's so hard to have the balls to like tell a customer no and with understaffed shifts managers who do have said balls are never there when you need them. Obviously there's exceptions for absurd requests but little things just aren't worth the headache

Yo so I’m a ✨waitress✨ And from this I can imagine that when the table ordered an entree after their main, the original order was put on hold and subsequently forgotten to be called away to the chefs because two different waitstaff took the order. They suck for ordering breakfast too late but I don’t think it was a catalyst for their order being forgotten. I don’t know man I get waiting for your food too long sucks but just don’t be rude? Like generally at the restaurant I work if something like this happens we usually take the dishes off the bill and no one has to pay.

Yep, because if their main came out before or with their appetizer they would probably throw a fit as well, even though they ordered through 2 different waiters. Also, if an hour has gon by and you haven't even asked about your food, you screwed yourself. Even if they did make a mistake and had it on hold, asking 30 minutes in would have made the waiter realize what happened and they'd move their ticket to the front

I can think of multiple things off the top of my head that would caused them to wait so long: the entree they ordered could have required equipment that isn't normally needed at lunchtime so it wasn't turned on anymore, food at that restaurant could be partially prepared ahead of time for higher efficiency (and since it's past breakfast time, they're all out of prepped breakfast foods, so they would have had to make the entree from scratch, thus spending more time than they would normally), and the people on shift at that time might not be used to making it

I have a distinct memory of going to dinner with my Dad and siblings, to a recently opened restaurant. My Dad ordered a medium rare steak and after we got our food and had eaten some of it, he asked for the manager, stressing to our waiter that he wasn't mad and wasn't trying to complain. The manager came over and Dad had a conversation with her about the steak, saying he wasn't mad, didn't want a discount and intended to pay our full bill, BUT the steak was not medium rare, and he wanted to inform her, so she could talk to the cooks and let them know it had not been cooked as ordered. Not because he wanted to cause a problem or have any one punished, but because he believed it was fair to provide feedback to the cooks, because cooking meat correctly was important, and because he knew someone else might not be so calm about it.
So anyway that's my story about how to not be an asshole at a restaurant while still making sure problems are addressed.

As a former waiter (I worked in a 4 star hotel for a year), if someone ordered something that we didn’t have or something we weren’t sure we could serve at that time, we always checked with the chefs and got back to the customer ASAP. We also had a digital docking system for each table to keep track of each table’s order. If they ordered something with another waiter, it was never an issue. Even when the digital system was down, we had dockets with the table number that we gave to the chefs and the waiters manning the “grill” (essentially just where the food came out). Either the establishment had a bad system or the waiter forgot to put the order in.
Either way, the way it was handled was shitty. If it was a good restaurant, it was probably swamped and they overlooked it, which is a very easy mistake to make when you’re manning 12 tables of 2-15 people at a time or (on the chefs’ end) serving every customer in the restaurant as quickly as possible. If OP was told it would be out in 20 minutes, they should have waited. Chances are, if they had spoken politely to the manager about it while paying, they would have gotten it for free anyway.
Handled badly by both parties imo. It isn’t hard to own up to your mistake to a customer, and it’s not hard to be polite and considerate towards waitstaff

It was the end of my shift today, it was almost 10pm and our kitchen closed at 9. I had a table with just drinks that came in after the kitchen closed so I said I would serve them until I was done cleaning and closing everything (I figured an extra few bucks at the end of my shift wouldn’t hurt) usually waitresses don’t do that but I am the exception at my place of work because I like that tip money haha. so I was done cleaning and I handed them the bill, and they looked at me with the most confused faces ever. I said “I’m don’t closing and my shift is over so I’m closing out your tab with me so I can go home .” And walked away, there was a live band so it was very loud but I know they heard me because I was yelling over the noise. I come back 15 minutes later after waiting for them to put cash or a card down. I asked them if they could pay kindly and they said “I don’t want to leave” I responded “sir you don’t have to leave but I want to leave because my shift ended 20 minutes ago, and the kitchen has been closed for over an hour.” And this man kept arguing he didn’t want to leave like bro YOU DONT I WANT TOO. I’ve never been rude to people giving me service and I have a lot of personal shit in my life including being chronically ill with an expensive disease and being poor. I don’t understand people who snap at minor inconveniences and treat it like the end of the world. There are far bigger problems then pizza or quiche.

I’ve been a server on and off since I was 15 from casual dining to fine dining. I’ve never been made to pay for a canceled order. Most of the time they give it to the servers to eat. 🤷🏻‍♀️

not a waitress but I am a cashier and barista at a hospital and I have noticed that the worst customers are the older ones (60+) m
esp being at a hospital I can imagine that some ppl are going through a stressful time in their lives with family/friends being sick/injured
still doesn’t give them any excuse to scream, pout or yell at us

As a person who did wait service for years and years and years and finally landed a better gig, thank you for this. Brutal work conditions at most fast paced restaurants regardless of “quality”. 😅

My mom is notoriously unlucky when it comes to ordering food. Whether it's wait time or specifications she made to her meal that get missed and she has to reorder, it's bad and it happens almost any time we go out to eat. Still, not once have we had a situation with wait staff in which we have to ask whether we were the asshole. Just be nice, even if you server looks like they dgaf, they're probably just having a long day.

The fact that they said it never got rang in means they were definitely not lying, bc I’ve been a server before so I know the classic lies servers tell whenever they accidentally pocket a ticket 🤣

If you go somewhere else, it’s going to be more than 20min before you get there, order, and get your food.

I had this waitress at a red lobster maybe three years ago and she was the sweetest person in the world. I remember she was 3 months pregnant at the time and she was so excited about it. We gave her an extra big tip and every now and then I wonder if she’s doing well. I don’t understand how people can be mean to waiters or any customer service workers. They go through so much. Be a fucking human.

as a waiter, it was probably a communication problem. when i get asked for something from a coworker's table, i have to tell them or else they could ask for it at the kitchen again or not know if its being done or if it was already brought to the table

I once asked a waiter if they could do something off menu. Waited over an hour and tipped our waiter over 30% on a very expensive group meal. He went above and beyond to meet my request!

As someone in the service industry for many years, there are some things that are justifiable to complain about, you’re still paying for a service. It sounds like you’re saying to never say anything to staff if something is done wrong. That doesn’t make you a better person, that just makes you a pushover.

It's def not legal for an establishment to take the cost from their wages, idk why they'd even think that's a thing haha. Restaurants are notoriously shady so maybe it happens, but def not legal or the norm.

Sounds to me like they were two entitled and extremely demanding customers (I can see them insisting on having the damn breakfast quiche) and after the waiter gave in to the request to be nice.... They behave this way🙄

What does well adjusted mean? I’m well adjusted to my lifestyle, but not in general maybe. I can barely stand to be in a room with cable tv
