- Denny Hamlin and Jared Allen are back from a historic race at Kansas. Denny had a front-row view of the closest finish ever as Kyle Larson beat Chris Buescher by .001 seconds. Sunday's race featured the perfect amount of tire falloff to keep fans entertained. But could Buescher have done anything differently to hold off Larson?
Timing and scoring aren't always the same as the official finish line, promoting questions about NASCAR's camera angles and the layout of the finish line. Pit road was eventful for Denny, and he breaks down his day, including whether he could've made it on fuel had the race stayed green or if Martin Truex Jr. would have passed him.
Denny also provides insight on why he opted for the inside lane on the restart.

The last 40 laps were loaded with tons of strategy among other things playing out. The caution led into the finish we got, but without it, it would’ve been just as good
As a NASCAR fan it was exactly what NASCAR needed with this car!! The racing was some of the best I've seen with this car! Then you had strategy that made more exciting and then you had the most exciting photo finish in NASCAR history!! All I can say is that if you wasn't excited with this race you will never be excited!! Great racing guys!
If you have the mph of the second finishing car, you can use the margin of victory in inches with a formula to convert it to thousandths of a second.
Also knowing the FPS of the camera you know the times between frames

They literally determined the delta between 1st and second utilizing basic math and frames the High speed camera. It’s not .001. That’s the limit of the transponder due to variables and latency. The official time had an extra zero.
If we assume 170 mph at the start finish line that is equal to 2,992 in/sec and if we assume a 2 inch margin of victory then the result is 0.0007 seconds... just did the math and then figured maybe someone in the comments did too...
To put into context it goes 720 - 900 -1080 - 1440 - then 4k
Nascar is sending videos with quality from 2010 if they are 720
If you use these cameras that are super high speed when we see Ultra slow motion that take like thousands of frames per second you would obviously see more than a simple camera could possibly catch and atomic timing is pretty hard to stop😂
Not tire at all. The camera used to decide the finish was a automatic triggered system with a High speed camera that is capable of 10 trillion to 150 trillion FPS! The photo that helped decide the finish isn’t the photos everyone keeps referencing. Chris was claiming it was from the 40’s because the photo was in black and white. It’s void of color for logical reasons. These systems cost +$40k. It’s not just the photo at the line the camera takes so many frames we can calculate the delta between 1st and second.
@@driverslqqk7940they used one of those cameras to determine the winner. They literally disclosed the photo releasing it immediately. The systems available for Motorsports can have camera options up to 150 TRILLION FPS. The one used to determine this race was adequate. Clear by the photo. If your looking at a picture in color your looking at the incorrect photo. If your photo wasn’t taken from the infield perspective your looking at the wrong photo.

That first stage was ridiculous. The back in forth between Ross and Larson definitely bured there tires off and let you close in and pass them both thought you were going to pull away but Ross made it interesting at the end of the stage. Don’t think we will top this first stage for entertainment all year. Can’t be Chastain, Hamlin, and Larson battling it out for the lead🍿🍉🇺🇸

Use the photo finish camera with the overlay of the line to align a laser level in order to paint the line on the track in line with the official overlay they use. Pretty simple.
If they want to bulldoze texas, this is what to model it after, not Atlanta. I enjoyed this race significantly more than the Atlanta or any superspeedway race.

19:40 Given that the highspeed camera takes 'n' amount of pictures per second, they can calculate the amount of frames between where Kyle crosses the line and Chris crosses the line. We only have one frame (from the highspeed) because that's all NASCAR shared but the camera takes the whole sequence so they can count the number of frames and times that by the amount of time between each one.
i.e. if the camera takes 1000 shots per second (a shot every .0001) and in one frame Kyle crosses the line and in the very next one Chris does, then that means Kyle won by .0001
That'd be my guess on how they turned up with the time between Kyle and Chris.
That’s literally how they calculated delta between 1st and second. They utilized the high speed camera. It’s why they have the system as a secondary redundancy. It’s how this race was determined.

19:58 you can tell timing off a photo. The frame rate of the camera between the picture that showed Larsen cross and Buescher crossed
Also the optical difference between the splitter is because the Ford front profile falls down at a different angle in front of the hood then the front of the Chevy makes the Chevy front splitter look massive compared to the other cars (but especially compared to the Ford)
They didn’t use that photo or that angle for the official review. The a actually released the official photo. It’s black and white (hence Chris’s comments about 1940) it’s a high speed camera with an auto trigger. Or not only told nascar whom crossed the line first but the exact differential between 1st and second.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with banging doors coming to the finish line racing for the win. If you say otherwise your not a true fan. You dont HAVE to door bang side by side there but you should most of the time unless your well ahead.

As a photo finish judge with over four years of experience in greyhound racing, officiating more than 10,000 races, I bring a wealth of experience to this topic. The technology employed in NASCAR is derived from that used in both horse racing and other forms of motorsports. These high-speed cameras capture approximately 20,000 frames per second. Importantly, each photo is produced over a continuous interval, effectively laying down the image sequentially from left to right.
The essence of photo finish technology lies in its precision timing mechanism. Each pixel in the image is linked to a specific time code. This allows us to measure extremely tight finishes accurately. For instance, in the image, those two visible lines demarcate a minuscule time gap of just 0.001 seconds. This demonstrates that, indeed, precise time measurements are integral to these photo finishes, enabling us to determine the winner in even the closest of races.

Restrictor plate tracks, for example, make good finishes, "good" crashes (as some see it), but crappy racing, imho.

It’s beyond the margin of error for an RF transponder based system and is why the resorted to the high speed auto triggered camera system (which actually a very advanced camera system) in order to calculate the true delta between the cars they had to calculate the distance and speed utilizing basic math. How rude do you think they get the official time variance without the timing system genius.
It was a great race start to finish. The passes took many laps to complete if at all and the back and forth the leaders could do was great.
Nascar Entertainment series should show fans us data how everyone slow down to give DP Daytona pole or did the industry give her a better car as they do every week for JGR
Damn I am so glad he said that about Atlanta! I said the whole time that the whole race was mediocre but the finish was making people say how it was a "greatest of all time" type race. Everyone acted like I was crazy! The first New Atlanta race was way better!

NASCAR has the best camera's. Their 6,000 frame's per second. Your phone is only 30 fps.
I believe the high speed camera systems utilized for finishes can range between 10 trillion to 150 trillion FPS depending on the system utilized. Yep trillons. They are also triggered automatically by a broken beam IR/ laser or other wise via transponder pickup. The trigger is placed at a predetermined distance from the finish line to account for speed, distance, and latency. The systems can cost over 40k. They where first built for horse racing.
If denny hamlin wins the chip this year I will get an 11 tattooed on me. I bought an 11 hat at Dover and he won.... Im A11 in at this point!

The problem is that neither the camera at the flag stand nor the results of the transponders crossing the last timing loop are what NASCAR uses to determine the winner of the race, but those two bits of information are the only ones shared with the fans at the time.
The official photo finish from the infield side should be on the painted start finish line. (on the official photo finish the line is under the door numbers) Great race and i like both drivers which were in the photo finish and have no skin in the result either way.
The official photo is from the infield for very good reason and is a taken by an automated high speed camera. The official line is at the technical start finish location determined by the start of the timing loop and location of the receiver. This is true for all forms of modern motorsports and has been debated on controversy many times this year alone.
All the photos show Larson ever so slightly ahead. It was an amazing finish. I hate it for Chris to be that close.
A lot of great takes on the photo finish, but everyone misses the fact that the official and more credible camera is not a normal câmera. It captures only the same 1in of space in a very small amount of time, enough to calculate the time between cars. Then each image of each moment of the space is out side by side. And as each car has different speed and acceleration it causes a lot of what they are calling optical artifacts. Like one car appears to have a bigger splitter.
Also, the perceived low quality is because of how incredibly fast the system has to be. It is many many times faster than a normal câmera, so they is much less light. You can have all the resolution in the world it won't make a difference if there's no light. What we are used to as high speed cameras must have an insane amount of light to make it work and still is tough. You would need a absurd amount of light to make it work across such a huge space.
One more thing. Usual high speed cameras suffers a lot on the depth of field aka focus. Only a very tight distance range from the camera is in focus while the rest is garbage for the porpoise of a photo finish. Tô sim it up, the current technology is freaking insane as is and we should give it more credit for the very tough jog it has been doing across a lot of different sports.
Thank you. Tracks and sanctions can order the system with a camera capable of 10 Trillion FPS. I’m certain the system nascar ordered runs a FPS most people cannot imagine. Chris commented about 1940 because days phot wasn’t in color. It’s not for god reason.

Buscher admitted they were both banging doors from turn 4 all the way to the finish. Plus initial contact between the cars was made by Buscher

He got outraced. It happens sometimes. Buescher is a hell of a driver though. He’ll be back in victory lane soon.
The high-speed camera take tons a photos in a certain time so they can calculate how long it took the 17 to hit the line after the 5 did. Yes denny they can figure out how long it took.
Use "The Slow Mo Guys" 10,000 frames per second camera at the start finish line. This would be a great way to promote NASCAR to a younger generation
My question is when there's a photo finish at night does the camera Focus differently than it does during the day? Because the TV Camera will slow down to see who want to stage and you can clearly see all the details of the car during the day. But when Night comes with the glare from the track lights, the the camera is focused on the background not the foreground

If you let someone have the inside like Larson let you last year, Larson could've done that exact same thing and now Buesher doesn't even get a top 10.
OK, so I said the same thing about the reflection on Kyle Larson‘s splitter as they were showing the replays, but a lot of people are talking about the line and I know you’re gonna get to the line you haven’t gotten to yet before I made this comment but I said the exact same thing about the line as you said about the reflection on his bumper because of the banking does the linelook crooked because of the banking or is it actually crooked? That is my question because of my opinion, it goes hand-in-hand with the banking and the reflection on Kyle Larson’s front splitter
The reflection is irrelevant. Just as irrelevant as the lube your discussing. That’s not the photo utilized to determine the race m. That was a high speed camera. A redundant system utilized for this purpose. That photo is black and white and has no shadows. It took thousands of photos in a fraction of a second. The painted line has nothing to do with the finish. However the high speed camera shows the 5 cross both the painted line and the official start /finish timing line.

19:19 You see an inch, but you don’t know. You can’t quantify that, in time. Yes, you can. Distance / Speed = Time. Between the telemetry of the car, the known frame rate of camera, and measurements of artifacts on the track, they could calculate the margin down well past .0001, depending on the frame rate of the high speed camera.
I love that Denny is still finding something to argue for because there's nothing to complain about. But he is right. IF that higj speed camera photo can be bettered in terms of quality they need to do so. This is the second time this year they've had to release the photo to media. And the scoring loop should be placed in a way that you dont get a different winner on timing and scoring than is called by NASCAR. My concern is what if the 4th decimal spot showed Buescher was ahead? I dont care if they round up because they dont use the 4th decimal spot, but yeah. I dunno. Just some things that you never think would be a big deal but here we are.

I don’t agree with Denny a lot, but the tv camera made the 5 splitter look longer. I did think NASCAR called the race too soon and should have taken more time to declare a winner.

Denny’s first mistake was expecting Austin Hill to be courteous and think of anyone but himself on the racetrack. The fact that he’s running last on the lead lap and points from a few positions gained are useless to him mean nothing to him.

That’s not the picture. The camera used to determine the race was an extremely expensive and technologically advanced High Speed camera shooting millions and trillions of FPS. The official photo was black and white and taken from the infield. The quality is exceptional.
I wander with Denny being a owner and if he has a third car and chase Elliott was available would he jump on the opportunity and hire him to drive it or would he go a different direction
You absolutely can quantify time from a photo. You find the distance, and you know how fast the cars are going. From there the math is super easy to figure out how long it takes the cars to travel the distance the 2nd place car is from the first, and that is your margin of victory.
With so much parity in the car, what does really changing the tracks NASCAR runs on matter. I like the Roval, but I think that it and even some other "super speedway" tracks like Talladega needs a stronger chicane area to break it up.

Check out Phantom Camera's and how High Speed Camera's work. The faster you shoot the less resolution you have. Maybe check out Destin with Smarter Everyday or Gavin with Slow Mo Guys. Both shoot high speed and resolution is sacrificed for FPS.
There are tracks all over the states that have the finish line/scoring line not in same spot.
In all modern forms of motorsports utilizing RF transponders and receiver based timing / scoring systems. Been that way for decades now. It’s amazing how people still seem to struggle with this concept.

People are slow. That’s not the phot lo utilized to determine the finish. That was a high speed camera. It’s a clear black and white photo. Your all discussing something irrelevant to the conversation.

If the timing loop is straight, and the transponders are all mounted in the identical location, they use it for lap times, qualifying position, caution restart, and everything else regarding the official race results. They should be used for the race winner as well!
Genius. The transponder has margin of error that becomes problematic at a certain point. This is a result of basic variables and latency. This requires a secondary metric to measure the results. In 2004 they didn’t have the high speed cameras we have today. The secondary camera doesn’t just give us a photo of whom crossed the line, the high speed camera allows is to mathematically calculate the true delta in time between first and second with basic preschool math. That’s what was utilized here. An extremely high quality camera which functioning in trillions of FPS that was triggered automatically. It’s the not picture that all these geniuses seem to reference.
If there was 1 inch of distance difference at the finish line and let's say they were traveling 150mph it is approx 0.0003 seconds.

@@driverslqqk7940Jimmie is the one who hasn’t done anything outside of having the best car. Larson was winning in the #42, and wins in everything he drives. Jimmie wasn’t much before he was paired with Chad, and he hasn’t done anything since. Not saying Jimmie isn’t a good driver, but he was never at Larson’s talent level.
Bring back Chicagoland and do a test at Atlantic without the super speedway package and see what happens there. Daytona and Talladega have been pretty dull in recent years and having that same package on a 1.5 is exciting and great finish, but would love to see an Atlanta race without the SS package.
NASCAR needs to come back to Kentucky! There is a massive fan base for cup cars racing on this mile and half!!! I understand the traffic was a major problem but with a little bit of money it could be fixed. With Amazon sharing the entrance road make them invest in some of the money to help fix it! It would be very beneficial for them as well!

For the photo finishes you need a higher frame rate, not more resolution. On TV they show the camera and every frame is like 6 inches, and since that’s what everyone sees on the jnternet, so they definetly need better frame rates, and a straighter line.

That phot is black and white and was released immediately. That system is extremely advanced and cost around $40K and up. It doesn’t need updated.

The real camera utilized to determine the results is actually a very advanced High Speed camera that running Trillons of FPS ( Jared says better frame rate…wtf) like 10- 150 trillion FPS is high enough. The system is auto triggered usually by breaking a beam or otherwise triggered by an RF transponder pickup and cost between 20k to 40+K. The quality of the picture is amazing considering the speeds we are talking. Denny is referencing the wrong photo and camera which is also fairly clear. Chris was claiming the photo was from the 40’s simply because it was a black and white image and apparently he struggles to interpret images without full color saturation. The photo being black and white was for a logical reason. The painted finish line is irrelevant and moot point as the painted line is nothing more then a superficial and symbolic representation of the finish for the fans. It’s use based on pure nostalgia. It’s not the official marker of the finish and thus it’s accuracy is unimportant.

so if going by Dennys argument he would have not have won Daytona on some races if we dont judge by the first part of the finish line both parts of the camera both sides show Larson had it by a small margin the camera shot from the flag stand shows the paint on the finish line was good but the one from close the pit row was blured and looked kinda unpropotional where it looked blured

The transponder doesn’t have .000 limit, the margin of error is a above .001. This is due to multiple reasons. Most are common sense. The main reason is latency. There’s a margin of error for the receiver to pick up transponder of car A and a margin of of error for the time it takes to pick up transponder of car B and a margin of error concerning the field of view and even mounting differences. This all equates to milliseconds that add up when discussing a fishing this close.
The timing cannot accurately detect .000 the margin of error is higher then that. The system originally stated .001 because of this. Essentially an error code. The official time is calculated via the high speed camera and basic math. Mar which was closer to .0001. Latency and other variables is why the system cannot detect .001 or below. It’s not magic. A fixed vertical line scan camera would solve the problem. The scan rate is very high. This is basically capturing only the finish line boundary at a very high rate. They use line scan cameras for horse racing. This is why there is no background image since the sliver of background is the same for every line sample and ends up looking like a horizontal smear.
The system utilized a camera that’s automatically triggered via a beam interruption and films at millions or trillions of FPS. Depending on the system they utilized. The photos everyone is referring to isn’t the correct photo. Nascar released the correct photo immediately. The phot was black and white. Hence the reason Chris said it was from the 40’s. It’s black and white for a reason. The official delta between 1st and second can be and was calculated via this high speed camera. The system was originally developed for horse racing. It’s plenty advanced and adequate.

Whoa dingus horse racing does have a "line" its a set of pylons so the jockeys know where they are coming up to the end. Also it holds the timing beam/camera.
