    The Breville Touch (as well as the Touch Impress, the Pro and the Bambino) uses ThermoJet heating system. Essentially it's a thinner, more efficient thermo-block: the water flows through a hot metal coil.
    It is not a single boiler system! It has no cup warmer nor heated group head and portafilter because there's nothing hot inside the machine when it's idling. However, you can still brew and steam milk back-to-back because water is heated and ready in just a few seconds.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, it doesn’t have a ‘boiler’ as you’d find in traditional machines, however you can’t simultaneously steam milk and pour a shot of coffee, which you can do with dual boiler machines.
      Streaming the milk while your shot is pouring it’s very helpful. Having said that, the 3 second warm up of the thermo jet is really good.

    There is a way around the blast. You need to start the wand then when it spurts out under 4 secs then stop it put your cup under it again and start. It won’t spurt water out. You need to do it like under z4 secs.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes- I just find the touch screen isn’t the best interface for this, it takes a few seconds to get going. Other machines seem to allow a quicker full pressure blast of steam. But it’s a minor gripe, and it still gives a decent microfoam

      If you’re after a more hands on semi automatic machine like this, the 2 obvious choices in this price range are the Barista Touch or the DeLonghi La Specialista. The DeLonghi is generally about £100 cheaper, and does have the advantage of a dual boiler and an auto tamper, but on the downside it only has 6 grind settings as opposed to the 30 on the Barista Touch, which is pretty much a deal breaker unless you use the savings on a separate grinder. It also lacks the Touch screen and auto milk steamer.
      If you want a more automated experience, the Gaggia Cadorna Prestige is a great option in this price range.

    Hi, great video. Made my first decent coffee from your video. I don't seem to get as much coffee out as you did though. Question, for drinks like americano cafe crema etc, do you just add hot water instead of milk? Thanks a lot!

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glad it was helpful. I’ll put up another video on tips soon, having spent some time now with it. For Americanos, I put in the water first (into a pre-warmed mug), then a double shot of espresso on top. The coffee going on top gives a bit of a crema on top, which improves the mouth feel of the drink.

    It's good to see someone getting good coffee from their Touch machine.
    Having recently purchased a Barista Touch I've wasted a couple of hours and 350g of Monmouth coffee, however the shots are either too fast or too slow. More a case of bean to sink than bean to cup! Certainly, I should have started with supermarket branded coffee.
    I have tried the regular steps:
    1. Weighing the coffee bean input and grind output before pulling a shot.
    2. Use of a distributer tool, standard tamper and also a palm tamper.
    3. Adjusting burr settings.
    I'll give it another week and if no success this machine is going back!
    Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Consistency is key. Keep weighing the coffee. Always pull through a shot of water before making your first coffee to warm the machine up. Keep using the distributor tool, but tap the portafilter beforehand to settle the ground coffee.
      Try to keep your process the same each time. If you have pulled the correct amount of espresso, stop the extraction- even if it was too fast, then set the grind a notch lower for next time.

    I looked at these and the sage oracle on the John Lewis site , some good reviews but alarming how many new machines reported as broken and replaced and or rubber seals failing and dumping water on elect components so failing the machine …I’d quite like a Sage Oracle but have been put off spending £2k seeing all the comments about
    Poor reliability…..no comments from Sage in response to such reviews is worrying so don’t think I’m in a rush to buy till I see some more positive comments on reliability

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably sensible. I can’t comment on the Oracle, but the Barista Touch has never put a foot wrong with me in 2 1/2 years of fairly heavy use.
      John Lewis and Sage offer a 2 year warranty as standard, which should offer some peace of mind of you do decide to go for one.

  • @SuperMatrix59

    The one big thing safe has to do is for this machine and up they need to put in a better grinder. It’s not bad but to really dial in on flavor you need another grinder like I do I have the baratza sette 270 Wi. Listen the built in grinder isn’t a slouch but clumps a lot.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 270 WI is a good piece of kit, but it all comes down to budget. Personally, if I was going to spend £500+ on a grinder, I’d get a different espresso machine too. The Barista Touch has a decent grinder for the price, but a with everything, it’s a compromise between performance and cost.

    Great review. Thanks. If you’re better off frothing the milk yourself and if you don’t need all the personalized settings on the touch screen, what does this unit have over the less costly Barista Express? Also, a criticism of this unit is that you cannot get the water hot enough for a good shot. I read that a lot. Have you had that issue? Thanks again for the great video!

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Extremely valid points about the Barista Express. It will create just as good coffee as the touch, and costs a lot less. One advantage of the Touch, is that it is easier for other people to use, and saves time if you’re in a rush or just can’t be bothered doing it yourself.
      With regards to the water heating- the other big advantage of the Touch, is that it the PID heats up in only 3 seconds from turning on. I think where most people go wrong, is that they just put the first shot from cold, and whilst the water is hot from the boiler, it then goes through all the cold metalwork etc before getting to the coffee. For this reason, you should pour some water through before pulling your First shot. There is also a temperature setting in the settings menu that some people may not be aware of. Having done this, I haven’t had any issues with the temperature, although it’s possible some people who complain had a faulty machine I suppose.

    Great review. How do you delete the factory preset drinks you don't use off the screen?

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not possible to completely delete them unfortunately. If you press and hold the button for one of the preset drinks, let’s you ‘edit or reset’ the settings for that drink, so you can adjust the brew time, milk texturing and amount of water. If you do this to a custom drink you get the ‘edit or delete’ options, but not with the preset ones.

      @@California007 you can delete the new drink you created, just not the presets. I only have 1 ‘custom’ drink, and just tweak the presets to my liking. Annoyingly, it doesn’t save the grind settings as part of the drink, it always just uses the previous grind setting

      so what is the difference between single and double when it comes to brew time? As it still allows me to set a custom time for single or double brew

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@junedahmed3433 you can set a custom time with either, which kind of negates the difference, but I think the default single/double setting uses volume rather than brew time. The problem is you can’t adjust it, so you’re better off setting a time and using that.
      Set the time to max while you’re setting it up, and manually stop the extraction by pressing the button when you get to 36g of espresso. If this took 25-35s, then set the time it took as the brew time. If it was way shorter/longer, adjust the grind size and try again until you’re in that 25-35s range to get a 2:1 ratio.

    Thanks for the great info. I am researching the Touch. Are the preset recipes meaningful? Since Latte, Cappuccino and Flat White depend on the ratio of the espresso and the milk, how does the preset programming help the user to make Latte, Cappuccino and Flat White differently? All videos I researched so far just show brewing 1 or 2 shots espresso, then add the milk. The machine has no control the amount of milk to add.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a really good question. With regards to the espresso, the settings are shared across all of the recipes, so if you change grind size, brew time or go from single to double, it changes that setting across all drinks. To be fair, it’s not as stupid as it sounds, as you pretty much need the same espresso in any of the drinks, and if you change beans, you wouldn’t want to have to go in and change settings for each drink.
      The machine has no control over how much milk you put in the jug, but you can set the temperature and ‘frothiness’ for each recipe individually. So your cappuccino can have a frothier texture than your flat white etc. this is great if you are going to use the automation. Having said that, you can get better milk texture by doing it manually, but it’s clever, especially for any users who can’t be bothered to do it manually.
      Finally, some drinks add in hot water, such as a long black (basically americano), and you can preset how much water is used based on the size of your cups, which is also useful.
      So to sum up, the recipes are useful, especially when you are new to the machine, but because it’s only a semi automatic machine, you are almost as quick to do it manually and get better results. Hope that helps

    Thanks for a great review. Just got this machine and the hot water dispenser stream is weak and moves around and splashes water. Is this normal? Even just using the hot water to pre warm a cup it sputters a bit and has a weak stream. 40 sec yields 4oz, but it makes a mess.

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hot water isn’t particularly fast, but mine doesn’t sputter and make a mess. I rarely use it, (just for the odd americano) but when we had an issue with the kettle, I used this machine to make tea. It took 1 minute per cup, which is pretty slow, although this was almost as quick as waiting for the kettle to boil I suppose.
      To pre warm the cup, I usually use the main coffee brew function, as this heats up the shower screen etc, which helps with the subsequent shot of coffee. This can splash slightly too depending on your cup.
      This isn’t very helpful, but I suspect there *probably* isn’t anything wrong with your machine.

    Hi Dave. Great review and good to see a proper cup of coffee! I didn’t know the trick with the grinder. I have a question I hope you can solve! I bought my touch in 2018 and it has worked without problems. I maintain it on a monthly basis. Yesterday everything worked normal; I did a cleaning and descaling procedure and changed the water filter. As I have done so many times before! After that the machine did not work!! It won’t take in water and gets very hot on the right top. I have no idea what happened and have tried everything including to reset to factory. It’s a very expensive machine and I am a bit chocked it can only last 3 years plus I miss my latte!!! 😰

    • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gutted! First off, the warranty period varies depending where you are in the world, so it’s worth checking with Sage/Breville whether it is still covered.
      While you’re doing that, switch the machine off, unplug it and empty the water tank. Have a good check around to make sure the filter is fitted correctly, no obvious leaks and all seals are in good condition etc. same goes for the rest of the machine.
      After it’s had a few hours to cool down, try it with a fresh tank of water- if there’s a problem, it’s unlikely to have gone away, but sometimes overheating will cause a temporary shut down, which might have cleared.
      If you’re still having problems, if you were still covered under warranty, I’d definitely be going down that route. If you’re out of warranty, I’d still email them- they may be able to help or offer a reasonable repair service. If that doesn’t help, either take the machine to a local repair shop, or if you’re confident, open her up and see if there’s anything obvious going on inside. Again, you’re looking for seals or o-rings that need replacing, or any components with visible faults.
      Good luck- hope your machine is working again soon…

It doesn’t seem to have any water leaks anywhere and i did turn off the machine and left it for 12 hours - but everything is the same. When I push the bottom under the tank water do come out, so it must be the water filling inside the machine that is the problem. • @davewellscoffee
      @davewellscoffee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken, adjusting the top burr is just a way of making large scale adjustments to grind size. The wheel on the side of the machine makes very small adjustments to the size of the grind. Basically, if the grind is way off, you can make a large adjustment by changing the top burr setting to get it in the right area, then fine tune using the dial on the side. You shouldn’t have to keep changing the top burr- that’s just one thing that can be necessary during set up.

      I had to adjust the top burr down to 4, which now means I use a grind size between 8 and 13 depending on the coffee. It does seem that there are sometimes variations between machines though; so what works for me may not work for you. Basically, if you’re always using a grind size of 1-2, adjust the top burr down. If you’re always right at the course end of the scale, adjust the top burr up, this should keep you in the middle of the game to allow adjustments.
      I have my temperature set to ‘high 1’. The most important thing with the temperature though is to pull a dummy shot before your first espresso to warm everything up.

      What sort of drink are you making? The espresso in a large drink makes up a relatively small proportion of the drink, so if the drink is too cold, it’s more likely the milk/water.

It’s essentially the same machine, but witha different intro screen. I guess they figured us brits would buy more machines if Heston Blumenthal put his name to the brand with his line of Sage products.
      The other one that looks very similar is the Barista Pro, which does exactly the same, but has a blue LCD screen and lacks some of the pre-set ‘recipes’ and smart milk frothing wand. Also the Oracle touch looks similar but is a bit bigger and twice the price. It has automatic tamping and a dual boiler.
