BinarySecond crucial to keep yourself stuck to the bike - trying to control the pedals from outspinning when descending can throw you off the bike if you are just on flat pedals.
now thats a good looking and fun time having build right there! I'm always hesitant to paint bars and then clamp them.. not sure why. Your's turned out just dandy!
Good to see you incursioning into the wild territory of weird track hybrids. I only build track bikes and tracklocross. The first time I rode brakeless I felt like discovering a whole new world I never knew existed, the way you must use your brain and senses while brakeless is what made me stop using brakes ever again. Great job as usual!
Another fun little tip, always finish seating the tire at the valve. After you've popped the last bit onto the rim, push the valve stem up into the valve stem hole and let it spring back out to insure the tube isn't pinched between the tire and the rim. Finishing at the the valve can also make a tight installation easier. A tight installation is also where a pinched tube could be of most concern.
Those stickers tell a story. That frame was a bike polo setup. He's in SLC area IIRC, so I bet it is a frame from one of the members of the Bee Hive Bike Polo Club.
I think stickers are each our own. When someone new gets anything with stickers the stickers don't have the same meaning as the person who put them there. It's now a clean slate for new stickers some day.
At 3:35 you were struggling with unscrewing the bottom bracket. Get yourself a nice long, strong metal pipe to slide over your socket wrench to use it as a cheat bar!!! You'll never have to strugle again. Just be careful if you decide to use it to tighten stuff as well as you could easily over do it. Remember at what length you grabbed the cheat bar, and how much force you used to loosen to figure out how tight you should go.
turned out so awesome man, great job to you and your kids. Funny cause when i saw it on Instagram first I totally thought of the squid bikes. Looks just like one!
I see a lot of people recommending foot retention, YES! But also I would say try to stay closer to the middle of the dropout, careful with the half link cause of back pedaling
Have you ridden this one much? Working on a 80’s/90’s shogun frame and making it into a tracklocross brake less bike. Nervous as hell about riding it but sounds fun.
You might want to connect with the TH-cam Channel Spindatt. He has built up a tracklocross bike in the past. Might be interesting to see your two approaches.
Felicidades..! Me gustan mucho las restauraciones de las bicicletas que haces, es un trabajo impecable, solo quería agradecerte por el contenido del canal y que sepas que estos llegan a mucha gente, de todas partes del mundo, un abrazo...!
If you wrap the bars from the closest to the stem out you dont need to use any tape you just tuck the end of the wind into the cap at the end. makes for a clean look.. good video man
I really do enjoy 😊 watching your bike builds Mr Old shovel, these builds are really inspiring and as soon as I get my parts for my Dawes project I will be as happy as a pig rolling around in the mud, however I have another bicycle project to do as well now, I have a trek FX 7.0 hybrid which has already been converted to a seven speed road cassette and as soon as I have the money, I will be putting on a 30/39/50 trip,e ring on the front to increase the top end speed a little bit and when this Is done I will let you know, anyway great 👍 video and I can’t wait to see you out riding your new build.
Hi adredy adredy, I really do appreciate all suggestions that come / es t to me ,however I have already made enquires at my local bike store about converting to a1x setup on my trek hybrid and I was informed that it was not possible as the frame was originally set up as a 3x 7system with the hyperdrive rear cassette, then I converted it to a road gearing set up ,then reduced the size of the front chain ring to22/32/42 this actually made the bike slower and realised that that was a mistake. I am hoping for a phone call from Tuesday this week about some other parts for my old Dawes and I will have a chat with them about my new idea and maybe see what they say about going 2x7 with a road racing crankset, however I did do this successfully back in the early nineties when I had bought a Peugeot lazer 3x5 mountain bike and after a few years that one ended up as a 2x6 with the front two chainrings being of 44/52 tooth cogs on there and I could literally go for four hours at a really good pace and it was a really great bike back then but now I need to get some Excercise due to me delveloping diabetes due to a job of which was extremely unhealthy and not good for the soul. Thanks again Adredy for you suggestions and I wish you a good night and many happy miles/ kilometres of cycling.Jack
One extra thing you can do to the electric tape is heating a spoke then "tack welding" 2 or 3 times close to the where the tape was cut. That way, the tape won't detach from itself when the glue looses its stickiness.
Dawes were once such a respected brand here in the UK, unfortunately things went downhill for them during the 1990's and once I began my professional involvement with them it wasn't long before I came to realise their lifetime frame warranty wasn't worth the paper it's written on. The best thing to do with that frame is to chop it up for scrap...
Just put a sticker over the crack, and go...yehaa. if you are going to ride cyclocross with a fixy it will be in the bin before you know it from all the crashes. Are those bars UCI legal for cyclocross? Love the paint job!
To remove stickers and keep the paint nice, try a vinyl removal wheel. It fits in a drill and makes light work of the stickers with no gunk left behind 👌
I love the simplicity of fixed/single speed. But brakes are good. And without foot retention, it could get especially ugly. Please be careful. You have a beautiful family. They need you.
I love how objectively your paint jobs get worse and worse every video but I like em more and more :D I really like that you let your kids have some fun painting the bike :)
If you come across a Trek Multi-track frame & fork in 21" please let me know I have new parts I would trade for it. Want to build a canti-drop bar gravel bike.
What frame did you use to replace the damaged one? 27.5 inch frame ? I want to make something like that with my old fixie I can't find a frame to fit more than 32c
I did but mistakenly missed filming it, recording before and after, it happens occasionally when I get out of sync with starting and stopping. It’s not me that is hard to re film if you miss it.
I like the paint work on this build. Seems after removing the stickers the original white paint of the frame was in almost perfect condition or did you restore it as well? Is the replacement frame an aluminium frame or a steel frame? In the end you didn’t use the repainted chain tensioner. Was the reason you have to set the rear wheel so far back so the chain tensioner do not fit anymore?
I love all bikes and I love your work keep up bro, cycling is a lifestyle, i love cycling especially mountain biking this year I got a new bike, a new hardtail cause my old one just couldn't keep up probably because is older even than me, my new bike is awesome or much better than old one is not exactly what I wanted but is cool I would love to have one day at least a trail fully but to get there some hard work will be needed :)) have great day bro and ride safe
i highly recommend adding straps, cages or clipless shoes when riding brake-less
fixies are deathtraps without them in the woods with steep inclines
Track style Toe cages for old-school mtb is pretty awesome ;)
Why?
BinarySecond crucial to keep yourself stuck to the bike - trying to control the pedals from outspinning when descending can throw you off the bike if you are just on flat pedals.
Real Robert Gaines?
Love seeing you repurpose old bikes, even more fun watching your kids be a part of this build. You are and inspiration to all us garage tinkerers.
I suggest straps or cages to make it easier to skid or back pedal
SPD
Tracklocross on flats with no straps or anything is totally asking for trouble. +1 to SPDs
now thats a good looking and fun time having build right there!
I'm always hesitant to paint bars and then clamp them.. not sure why. Your's turned out just dandy!
Thanks. It was a fun build and man are tracklocross bikes fun. It makes all the simple places I ride supper sketchy and fun.
I love the simplicity of a fixie bike but what stands with this build is the elegant looks. Cheers! More power!
the hand pen painting with the kids actually looks great gives the bike character !
I second (third, tenth, whatever) the need for straps on the pedals.
It's great to see the man himself venture into the world of tracklocross.
Also, speaking of the Squid So-EZ,it happens to be one of my dream frames.
Dido. If I like this one I’ll probably look into getting a So-EZ someday.
The build looks awesome! Love how you got your kids involved with the artwork.
Another fun little tip, always finish seating the tire at the valve. Finishing at the the valve can also make a tight installation easier. A tight installation is also where a pinched tube could be of most concern.
The squid guys have by far the best paint jobs I've seen and they keep getting better
Bike polo stickers on the bike!!!
The painting was really fun! I Loved it! Great job, Rob. Tchau!
Super nice! Great to see the whole family joining in!
I love that build. I hope the first ride will be a lot of fun
every time i watch your vids, i`m lerning something! sooo inspiring!
I'm sure you get it by now
Clipless pedals or straps
This thing is super cool and unique though!
Hurt my soul watching those old stickers get peeled off lol. Maybe its just me that like the old ratty lookin frames🤣
Theres not much of a show with out him repainting it 😁
Those stickers tell a story. That frame was a bike polo setup. He's in SLC area IIRC, so I bet it is a frame from one of the members of the Bee Hive Bike Polo Club.
some stickers were german... I wonder where he got the frame from
@@SlowpokeRodriguez80 Bike polo players travel all over the world, so those were from European clubs/tournaments.
I think stickers are each our own. When someone new gets anything with stickers the stickers don't have the same meaning as the person who put them there. It's now a clean slate for new stickers some day.
Great concept and restoration procedure..keep up the good work and more power to oldshovel!!!
That looks cool! Don't forget the foot retention.
Best part of the video is the DI sticker. UT pride!

Great video as always. Toe overlap is going to be an interesting challenge on this one.
Sorry I am late sir but still I am always watching your vids because it make me always happy your like a Big blessing to me♥️♥️
Nice build! I loved the paint job. As usual, great video! Big hug and take care riding this bike!
I know this is old, but that is fantastic to get the kids to draw on the frame.!
I've found that wider handlebars really help with climbing on a fixed gear. I believe mine are somewhere from 720 to 780. I use the wake mtb bars.
You should film that race, that would be fun! Great bike
An oldshovel upload on my birthday? Yes, please 😁🎉
Edit: PLEASE tell me where I can get one of those oldshovel hats? Please?
A long pipe on your ratchet prob better than hammering your nice Park wrench.
Curious if you have any feedback on how the paint jobs hold up. They have all been spectacular
Have you ridden this one much? Working on a 80’s/90’s shogun frame and making it into a tracklocross brake less bike. Nervous as hell about riding it but sounds fun.
It’s makes riding just on the road in front of my house fun 😄
They did a good job
I think you'll find adding a front brake & Power Grip straps will make it a Very Interesting trail bike.
You might want to connect with the TH-cam Channel Spindatt. He has built up a tracklocross bike in the past. Might be interesting to see your two approaches.
The tracklocross bike he has is $200 for frame/fork/headset. And super fun.
how have i not ran into this video love your vids and didn't realize you had a tracklocross build
Uww somebodies old polo bike re-purposed as a tracklo.. Nice work ✌
A true one off family involved bike memories 👍
Felicidades..! Me gustan mucho las restauraciones de las bicicletas que haces, es un trabajo impecable, solo quería agradecerte por el contenido del canal y que sepas que estos llegan a mucha gente, de todas partes del mundo, un abrazo...!
Yo, that cartridge bottom bracket was eeeevil.
what brand is that folding knife? looks great
nice build what gear ratio was that I train on a 48x13
hope you really enjoy building and riding this bike. Keep the bike, fixed gear is fun. TxCx, more fun!
If you wrap the bars from the closest to the stem out you dont need to use any tape you just tuck the end of the wind into the cap at the end. makes for a clean look.. good video man
Nice build. Do more builds
I used to have an old Eighthinch scrambler. This video makes me want that bike back :(
Not enought money in the world to buy this bike make whit the love and passion building whit your childrens... Peace and love from Spain brother
10:29 for a second there I thought you were painting a dead yellow bellied snake 😅
Awesome restoration and video I like how you do the colores
Can't imagine racing cross on a fixie. How do you dismount?
Old shovel how do you get parts for bikes like in your old videos I'm trying give a new life to Mountain Bike Hardtail

why not try 48-10 or 9 ? casette

Great tip!
Great build Mate!
the doodling reminds me of some of the Pegoretti paint jobs.
Use a bmx half link chain u can adjust for chain stretching by removing single 1/2 links.
What thrift store do you go to??? Always finding cheap and interesting bikes with potential. Mine just has old vacuums and a few wheeled walkers.
I AM IN SEARCH FOR A VINTAGE BIKE FRAME
WOULD LIKE TO FIND ONE SCOTT USA
AND TRY TO DO IT MY SELF, YOUR VIDEOS ARE VERY HELPFULL

Best build yet👍. That's a big statement 🤔
This was a cool one, dude!
With the DE Pedals 🔥
Nice build

Thank you another great video
In the coming days I would also like to see a 700c gravel build from you!
...also Will it be risky if the rear wheel is so far back?
Have you done a restore on an older Italian bike? I've got a Basso from the 80s here in SLC I could loan to you for a project.
I think we all want videos where you ride/race what you build
Should do a video fixing the damage frame
Sweet fixie !!! Now go watch MASH SF 😁
where do you find these used bikes,Need one
Loving the hate in the comments, you can tell this is a fun project, love it!
I have an old 26er I am looking to do this to. I was thinking drops though.
Not gonna lie; when the sharpies came out I was 100% hoping for doodles of "doodles"!
Nice job as always, though
I think you should try it with some clipless pedals
this is crazy, the replacement frame has stickers from a local bike shop on it, makes me wonder how it got to you.
Supernice!!! Did you use 26" rims with 38mm tyres? Cheers from Germany! :)
one question: how do i size my vintage mountainbike? do you have a size chart, im 1,68m love your videos!
I love how objectively your paint jobs get worse and worse every video but I like em more and more :D
I really like that you let your kids have some fun painting the bike :)
Great video .
Is that electrical tape in the bars?
If you come across a Trek Multi-track frame & fork in 21" please let me know I have new parts I would trade for it. Want to build a canti-drop bar gravel bike.
What a kind of saddle it is?
What frame did you use to replace the damaged one? 27.5 inch frame ? I want to make something like that with my old fixie I can't find a frame to fit more than 32c
When you cut the fork neck why didn't you have to put back the piece That goes inside it the threaded piece?

Love the eighth inch branding, are they still making bikes these days? Get some foot retention on there and you'll be skidding in no time
They are not. They closed up shop a few years ago.
Hello from Hamburg :)
Great bike! Riding breakless is insane, use straps..
Parabéns pelo serviço, ficou top a bike.
Nice work! What camera were used for making this video?
Good Family's job!
Really cool.
