- Surly Steamroller 650b Tracklo build! This is a very special build that has been a year in the making. Super happy how the bike rides and looks, crazy comfy with the 47c's, cambium and 4130 frame. I made sure to take it to some trails for a good test ride!

I swapped the forks out on my steamroller, got some master bike co chopsticks, I’m 5:10 on a 49 frame the longer axle to race balances it all out, the forks also fit a bigger tyre so I’m on 700x40 on the front 35 on the back, it’s basically a bmx but a track bike

I've always wanted a Steamroller, and this video "surly" didn't do nothing less but me wanting one for myself even more! Love the handlebar btw, and I must say, looking beyond the actual build, it's so much heat on your shelves as far as parts go!

Thanks! I haven’t done that no, I have done a few videos with the workshop audio and music but it’s quite hard to get it without background noise unfortunately!

Can you use a 26er wheelset for that type of build?
Is it banana candy yellow color from surlys website? In the pictures from the internet, the color seems more acidic. But in your video, the color is deeper, closer to mustard color

Why do you use a campagnolo bottom bracket? I would expect the Japanese Suginos to have a Shimano square shaped mount?
Sugino have a special “sugino 75 taper” for the 75’s. But people have measured and tested and found it to be the same as/ near identical to ISO taper. Shimano BB’s are usually JIS taper so no good for 75’s. The Campagnolo bb I use is ISO. Hope that helps 👍 lots of confusion when it comes to these cranks

whats your experience with tubeless while fixed? my tire aways unseats in the rear when i skid
I haven’t ever run tubeless fixed, so not sure sorry!
If ur above 35mm it could be cool personally I despise low pressure on a fixed gear because it makes the back wheel shudder when u skid
What compound are you adding to the inside of the head tube before the bearing races are pressed, and onto the fork before the crown race?
Just a thin layer of grease, you can also use some anti seize compounds
@@waveywheelies Curious! I've seen anti seize used before, but never grease - my thinking was that grease could lubricate and therefore negatively effect the friction of the pressure fit. But I presume you haven't had any trouble with that as your headset isn't falling out... I might start greasing my bearing races and head tube!
What kind of hubs do you recommend for a fixed wheel set like yours
Depends on your price range. There’s loads of really good hubs out there. Mainly I look for sealed bearing and fixed/fixed threading. Miche make a good hub at a really good price point
But why buy new for a vintage throwback

i ride a steamroller 700cc, thats exactly how i would build this except with brakes - although im not sure which brakes will fit with 650 rims. im in berlin and the police will confiscate your bike if you run it brakeless. the bastards.
Tektro R559, or use a drum brake like Sturmey Archer X-FD but this only works with a 36 spoke rim

Because it’s ISO taper and it works really well, practically the same as “sugino 75 taper”

Would it be able to handle 29er tires? I know the 1x1 takes 27.5 and 26” tires
@@420Sean69 from personal experience I've had 650b on, as well as up to 700x40c, and I think it could go up to 700x42c maximum. but for 29er i'm not exactly sure, but I think so. personally my sweet spot is with 700x38c on it for offroad/gravel

It’s one thing to watch you build these dope bikes, but the music is dope as well! I’m 54 years old and bought a fixie about 3 years ago and modified it to my liking! I love riding it a couple times a week! Keep up the good work!

I was just thinking of going 650b rather than 700c. That gap is not as bad as I thought🤯 definitely getting myself a set of WTBs as well lol, one thing if definitely upgrade on your surly is getting a king headset to join the rest of us 😁 I currently have mines on Phil’s and the poor SS bolts bent, might upgrade to titanium but solid build🤘
