@@eldonhill4840 "Every day added to the game's development = every day a better game" is not necessarily true. Stories like the one in the vid make me anxious for one thing: bloated ambitions that are not realised. I know Team Cherry are good at what they're doing, but this pitfall is very prevalent. I hope there is a solid core game and that Team Cherry stuck to the "we can wrap it up whenever" design philosophy, but a 2nd game is an entirely different beast than a 1st game. Mossbag explains a few aspects of that.
Being polished to perfection before release was the one thing that set Hollow Knight apart. Especially in the 2D platform format where games are legions but most of them are just cheap flash based turds. It took a long time to elevate Hollow Knight from that pitfall and it will take a long time for Silksong. Team Cherry is doing exactly what makes Hollow Knight successful so there's nothing to worry about.
We all know that Hollow Knight is just a recreation of what happens under Ari Gibsons Couch, so for Silksong they're probably just waiting for another bug society to evolve before they can fully recreate it and develop Silksong

Those are some big f#cking spiders for study my dude like imagine a body where it is literally a sidney funnel web spider that would make this game numero uno on my list to show and recommend to aracnophobics
"Scope way bigger than anticipated." This was a DLC OF THE FIRST GAME. Of course the scope's bigger! Although, it being EVEN BIGGER than their initial game idea is perfectly fine by me. I'd rather wait years for a masterpiece than talk for years about what COULD have been one.
That's exactly what I think. We just need to look at Gamefreak and Pokemon and we have the perfect example for rushed games, although for other reasons. So in other words, getting a nice and polished and, of course, finished game at release is much better than having to install a 5 GB day 1 patch or just a very unpolished game in general
Note that they didn't say anything about that the scope of the game is bigger than Hollow Knight. Only bigger than they expected. The "bigger than HK" is just wishful thinking 🙂 (though I personally also wish Silksong was even bigger than Hollow Knight and I can wait very long for it)
well said, I have the same opinion. Its the same opinion I have with Hytale. Exept their studio made the mistake of giving deadlines and then realising they want the initial release of the game to be bigger. honestly think it would be better if they released an alpha and then worked with the feedback of the community to make it better
yeah, take the Deltarune approach with it. Complete radio silence, except every six months they tweet out an update that's almost entirely devoid of content but at least confirms they're working on it
Team Cherry cutting themselves off and going radio silent is the absolute ideal approach, though not for us eager fans. It keeps their work from being pressured or influenced, and it also gives them the [hold B to] focus to really make something of quality that they themselves actually care about. Not all game developers have this luxury, we should appreciate it.
Reminds me of the video Internet Historian made on No Man's Sky. It was only when they cut themselves off from social media and stopped trying to do PR that they were really able to work on what was important: fixing the game. Hopefully that's what's happening here.
@@wonderlilane3724 Yeah, because even the most well-meaning of fans have ideas of how a game "should be," but game design by committee doesn't work. And Team Cherry is in a really different situation now than they were with Hollow Knight, because nobody had any particularly high expectations for Hollow Knight, but the hype for Silksong is unreal. They KNOW that the quality matters here, and it's a good sign that they're holding everything close to the chest, I think.
Plot twist: Team Cherry is making an ending for every seemingly small choice in Holllow Knight. You killed Myla? New ending. Menderbug? New ending. You saved Zote!? The darkest timeline begins...
But that wasn't the issue. If im not mistaken they had a new person overseeing the project and had them remove majority of the game in exchange for things like first person, etc. Im not going to pretend to know a bunch but cdproject red shot themselves in the foot. And no amount of time would have changed the outcome of the game. Its shallow inside and out. I can say this from 40 hours of play experience and still owning the game

If Christopher Larkin shared another OST video, that'd be enough for me. I can't tell you how many times i've listened to the clips of Lace & Bonebottom
Lace is already an absolute masterpiece to me. The fact that ma boy Larkin now gets to go all-out with a group of actual violinists combined with his already fantastic composition makes my that much more exited to see what the rest of the soundtrack will be like.
I 100% agree with this haha- I am in no rush to play silksong, but I love Larkin’s work! This is because I haven’t beat p5 or the pantheons with all bindings yet
By the time silksong comes out the meta will be so far developed that we'll be playing Melee with our minds. The only means of winning are through which fox player has a greater iq
I believe that by the point Silksong releases 20XX will have already been reached and long since passed, as people discover the true Luigi meta intended for a level of play the height of which we cannot yet possibly conceive
As long as Silksong matches hollow knight, I'll be happy with what they release. Anything above and beyond just makes the game more memorable & makes me appreciate it more
Sequels are always a rough spot. It's nigh impossible to match or even surpass the love of the original. Someone or even many will always complain and whine about one simple issue, and it will turn into a never ending spiral of fighting. That being said, i'm excited for silksong. No matter what happens i'll back Team Cherry up, i have faith in them.
@@Vepzzzzz Yeah, people nitpicking or being disappointed because of themselves is always what I'm worried about when a game I love makes a sequel.. The only thing I'm personally iffy about is 1 quests and 2 diverse combat. 1 because its easy to make quests boring and farmy and 2 I'm just kinda bad and combat items and menus scare me. (I might've beaten ToF and p5 but it took a WHILE and was more luck, time, and stress than skill) I know I'm gonna ultimately love the game in the end, just going into a new area and hearing Christopher Larkin's music is enough to send me. All we have to do is wait.
@@Vepzzzzz people will inevitably hate on Silksong, for how long it has been hyped. I just want to spend a week completely off internet holed in my room, lost in its world, and then be apathetic to any and all opinions. That literally all i want- a world to explore and get lost in.
The fact that silksong is taking this long just goes to show how team cherry is putting as much work as they can so they can make silksong as good as hollow knight was.
Cyberpunk taught us delays don't mean good, actually as it turns out nothing literally means nothing. They could be stuck on a stupid technical issue and are embarrassed, lost the code for the entire game...
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Cyberpunk did the opposite... same with games like No Man’s Sky. They were games that weren’t ready to be released yet and NEEDED to be delayed so it can actually be polished and be in the condition the studio wanted, but demand and money can make everything go down hill.
As agonizing as the wait is. For the love of god Team Cherry, TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Don't let fan expectations get to you, as impossible as that sounds. You guys caught lightning in a bottle once I'm sure you can catch a whole ass storm under a simpsons dome if you take your time with this.
As an Australian, I can confirm that we HAVE sunk in the ocean and are all living underwater, and that's how team cherry lost all their silksong progress and the world authorities are trying to hide it otherwise hollow knight fans will storm Parliament House.
As a Western Australian, this is misinformation and I don’t appreciate this. The truth is, Australia never existed, and they made it up so they could dump all their convicts in the ocean.
Incredibly well put together video, as always! Blew my mind a little when my avatar unexpectedly popped up on screen 😅 - very surreal! Thanks so much for the mention! Great perspective on Team Cherry wanting to get Silksong tip top from the get go, cos of the fact there will be insane numbers, playing from the minute it drops. Always feels to me Team Cherry have an almost insatiable creativity, that comes so naturally to them. I’m betting Silksong is gonna be a huge game and something very special indeed. Personally very happy waiting patiently to let them do their thing, as I’m sure they’re very keen to get things spot on. Super excited to jump in when it’s time! Awesome video once again, my friend! 🔥🍻😊
Hollow Knight’s existence itself is all the reason I need to trust that Team Cherry will deliver a quality product when, and _only_ when, Silksong is well and truly ready. Until then, I’m content to wait as long as necessary.

I find it fascinating how similar the stories between the development of Silksong and BotW2 are: so many DLC ideas that grew too large, requiring an entirely new game. Main difference is the size of the development team. Team Cherry is just a handful of people compared to the media giant of Nintendo. Nonetheless, I am very excited to see the finished products, and I'd rather wait a lifetime for a better game than a rushed one.
@@johnblack4307 I'm pretty sure they have botw and mario galaxy mixed up. Kinda unrelated but there is a gta pvp youtuber that was so upset about rockstars hilariously poor balancing that he made a series where he modded several vehicles to show how easy it would be and how much it would improve the game. He just changed some values and sfx nothing too crazy but his dedication to an 8 year old game is astonishing.
While I am excited for silksong, I do want it to be good. So I don't care how long it takes to make I just want Team Cherry to be happy with what the game ends up being by release.
Btw. Christopher Larkin recently updated his website, more specifically the "Contact"-section, which reads: "As I'm a full time composer and sound designer without a personal assistant, this means I may not always be able to keep up with emails, and due to the time that I need to dedicate to my work, I'm no longer able to provide answers to questionnaires. However! please check back after Silksong is released, as I hope to be dedicating more of my time to the community then! Thank you!" This text updated about... 1 or 2 months ago (?), which means... maybe we could get some more fantastic Silksong Music-Samples in the near future :D
Team Cherry aren’t going to release it until it is perfect. I trust them to release a completely polished product. I am content with that, I’m fine with them taking their time.
Can't wait for Silksong to be so full of content it reaches Noita levels of intricacy and half the achievements are only acquired by 2 people on the planet
I've been so behind on the modding community, I didn't even know the existence of the fan made projects that are being created. We've really come a long way.
_Thank you_ for the clarification that Leth _recommended_ TC to make blog post, not that _blog posts would be coming._ That was something I saw thrown around a lot, mostly because of word of mouth and people not interested in watching the full interview. Also, thanks for the little note about even Leth raising eyebrows about TC's continuous idea stuff, that was another detail nobody brought up that I found quite interesting.
"They're STILL waiting!?" "They think we're still working on it, of course they're still waiting." "Maybe we should just release it" "No, I want to see how far this goes." 100 generations later: u/weeblesjeebles’s (the poorly drawing hollow knight guy) descendants are now a religion which believes silksong is the messiah, so many groundbreaking fan mods and projects have been made that a content mod 10 times the size of vanilla hollow knight is the expectation, and team cherry’s descendants continue to honor their forefather’s advice: “not yet ferb”
I’m so glad you included WeeblesJeebles’s poorly drawn hollow knight pieces at 9:16, it helped her find love and now they’re both awaiting Silksong together :)
I'd like to add that on the APWOT book/magazine, on the team Cherry interview it is mentioned that TC is relatively ignorant about Silksong discussion (aka avoids looking at Silksong talk from the fans) Probably a sign that they want as little pressure as possible with making the game.
This was a wonderful video! You brought up a bunch of really intelligent points I'd never considered before, like how they might be staying silent to avoid distractions from the internet losing their minds. I take a generally patient approach with the view that Silksong is like a fine wine, but it was interesting to hear theories about their unconventional approach to publicity during development. Really all of it was very insightful!
"No long iterative processes. Our boss design discussions go for about 10-15mins max, then we're off and making!" as someone whose job is character design, this is the hottest thing I've ever heard
Well, while we wait for Silksong to release, I've managed to: -discover Hollow knight through one streamer that I follow -play Hollow knight for the first time, first feel and everything, very special -have fun doing so and getting hooked -finish the game to FULL completion in one save file -discover the wonders of this community -lost my precious savefile because my hard drive got FUBARed, no cloud save -get my heath broken by said incident -get sad -heal my wounds in about half a year -play the game yet again, right now, with cloud saving this time, intend to FULL completion again because I'm that crazy and I love the game that much :)
When people got mad with OmoCat and the devs of Omori when there wasn’t a lot of updates, one of the devs said that blog posts are difficult to make because the amount of coding they had to do to make something work might not be interesting to some. I feel like for SS being so much more complicated then an RPGMaker game, Team Cherry likely feels the same way.
"This month we were uh...optimising keyboard inputs and fixing a jump mechanic bug...is that what you guys want to hear about?" Probably something like that
This is not a good take. Omori was a kickstarted project. OmoCat *had* to deliver regular updates, because people already gave them money to make the game. At that point, you have a responsibility to your backers to provide them with regular updates, regardless of whether they're "boring" or not. I'm actually kind of upset that OmoCat and their team didn't suffer any real consequences for their absurd radio silence. Yes, Omori is a masterpiece, but maybe take the time to talk to your backers? They literally funded your game. Silksong, however, is not a kickstarter project, therefore they can basically do whatever they want.
@@AA-rh5ee Silksong at its core *is* a kickstarter project though. It began as a Hollowknight DLC that got so much funding that it became its own base game.
Honestly, as someone with an interest in computer science, I would be down for a blog post that is just "there was this one bug, and it took us 3 days to figure out what the problem was"
Me: “I’ll ask you this one time. Where is silksong?” Team cherry giving few updates about the game: “yeah, I’ll do you one better, who is silksong?” Mossbag: “I’ll do you one better, why is silksong?”
I deeply respect Team Cherry for not spoiling us with updates, it makes me feel like the secrets that will be in the game will actually be something worth discovering, same goes with Toby Fox and Deltarune.
i absolutely cant wait for silksong but i’m so happy to hear the scope was bigger than they thought that just means more content i’m sure it’ll be worth the wait
I hope Silksong doesn't end up being too big, from the sounds of it they seem to be overdoing it. Then again, I probably would finish the game even if it was 10 times larger than the first game.
i believe they are aware of the risk of "scope creep" and that they have it under control, based on this: 1- From their last blogpost, in December 2019: "And as some assurance: We’re not just randomly building things without an end in site. We know how this story unfolds and as much as we add, our intent is always to evoke the feeling of exploring a vast, surprising new world; one that matches (or exceeds) the scale and diversity of the original game." 2- From Leth's comment in the HK Discord server, in early 2021: (User): SS is not going to be rushed. Leth: Well...not in the same sense as HK . Leth: Now the challenge is to keep ourselves from adding too much and making the game take forever. Not “rushing” but more like... being mindful of scope creep.
@@alsartsavience3512 fantastically informative comment, I think I can sigh in relief knowing that team cherry are aware of their own bad habits and are actively being mindful of it, scope creeping is the demise of many a worldbuilders, hopefully it will not happen to silksong
It's taking so long because they're gonna try and cram every possible thing into the game, and then after it released we'll get another 8 free DLCs. And the game will launch at $2. Team Cherry are actually gonna bankrupt themselves making the greatest games of all time.
You can't go bankrupt if your fans donate thousands of dollars the moment you mention "financial issues" especially if it's followed by "will slow down development" lol
My guess is late 2022 or beginning of 2023. My other prediction is that, even if it doesn't live up to the hype, it will still be a great game. But my expectation is that SilkSong will be at least as good as Hollow Knight.
I feel like adding too much abilities later in the development breaks some portions in the early game so they often have to revisit the map design and the geometry of the level to not mess with the flow of the game.
@@DistressedCrab good to know they got some more helpon board! though even if there were more people involved, I'd still be surprised by the impatience.
@@Binkyouka A lot of it is silence, going radio silent about something normally means something major. So people are getting nervous. Is it canceled? Are there issues? Is everything okay? Is it almost done?
Given the feedback from Metroid V: It's safe to say a good amount of people expect Silksong to be the best Metroidvania ever made. Good luck to the team!
One the one hand, we all need to learn some patience so TC isn't caught in an anxiety spiral as they try to meet our expectations. On the other hand, SILKSONG WEN
Great video mossbag. 😃 And yeah, the hype machine for Silksong is real strong but I'm also hoping for tempered expectations when it's released in 209X. 😉
It's funny how metroidvanias like hollow knight were used to tide people over until a new metroid game came out and now a metroid game is being used to tide people over until silksong comes out.
Honestly, something you said has made me think. If Team Cherry is capable of shoving as much as they want into Silksong, how much could they add before it all becomes too much for Silksongs own good?
Yh exactly, bloating your game with content or having mindless filler is very, very bad. They should save a lot of stuff for dlc, so people don't get bored of the game in one go
Definitely a possibility, though the line drawn will be due to personal taste. Also the fact that this is artist driven can lead to long development times too, but they seem professional enough that this shouldn't impact greatly
This is honestly another issue I have. I fear the intense hype surrounding the game will force expectations through the roof, thus leading to immense scope creep and excessively bloating the game. Which, in turn, leads to an immensely strained and unfocused development. Trying to do everything to the game to please such an excessive hype. These types of situations _rarely_ end well and it leads to me being very concerned for the game's future. Hollow Knight got away with that development because it was a decently modest success with very little expectations. And as stated, TC literally ran out of money making that baby, thus forcing them to draw a line somewhere. They obviously won't have that issue for Silksong for a very long time. Which can be both a blessing and a curse. Deadlines can, sometimes, be quite important. Yeah, I'm rambling a smidge, but you get my points... I honestly don't envy Team Cherry right now. When (or rather, if) the game comes out, it's gonna either be a landmark point of the genre, or it's going to be a catastrophic bomb, even if the game itself isn't inherently that awful. That's the danger of hype culture...
I think the content they're now adding is optional stuff off the path that you can just skip and rush towards progression if you get impatient. the paths to the basic ending is probably extremely polished right now. they said they could just finish the game at any time and the main path would probably be great.
Leth has mentioned before that they know this can be an issue, to directly quote him in the discord, he said: "Now the challenge is to keep ourselves from adding too much and making the game take forever. Not 'rushing' but more like... being mindful of scope creep" - 1/15/2021 And for what its worth, the last blogpost back in 2019 also says the following: "And as some assurance: We’re not just randomly building things without an end in site. We know how this story unfolds and as much as we add, our intent is always to evoke the feeling of exploring a vast, surprising new world; one that matches (or exceeds) the scale and diversity of the original game."
I’m glad to hear they’re taking their time to make this game sizeable and polished, especially if it’s gonna be the last game they’ll make in the HK world for a while. I’m looking forward to it, however long it takes.
I remodeled the entryway of my house around the same time I finally got around to playing (and falling in love with) Hollow Knight. This meant I ended up creating a custom stencil to replicate the wallpaper in the City of Tears and used it in the entire space. I'm patient about Silksong. But the hype is real.
I have no expectations for Silksong. To be perfectly honest, the game isn't even in my wheelhouse as far as genres I typically play, but the artwork, the soundtrack, the "worldbuilding" (and I use the term loosely)... it's just beautiful. I even bought the Wanderer's Journal, and over a year later, I still haven't beaten Hollow Knight (nag all you want, I'm just not that into playing hard games for the sake of overcoming them). I hope they don't let the hype get to them. Even though TC has been quiet and made few, if any promises, people can and will still overhype themselves.
Agreed I just hope they release the game and it isn’t bloated. But considering how much they added to hollow knight and they polished it after cutting stuff this maybe a non issue. Outside of this the only real promises they made is that it’s probably bigger than HK, it has hornet, and it’s going to be the same difficulty and quality
Another Indie World. Day 1035. Hollow Knight Kickstarter began in December 2014, and the base game released in February 24th 2017 for Windows PC only. Major Updates for HK ended with Gods & Glory on August 23rd 2018 (barring patches). Given the success, Team Cherry will want to go bigger or meet the expectations of a game to the scale of HK G&G, on top of likely releasing it onto multiple platforms out the gate. It will come out when its ready (world willing), like a grub to a grubberfly. Would be nice to get a blip every now and then to make sure their still afloat.

So in other words, getting a nice and polished and, of course, finished game at release is much better than having to install a 5 GB day 1 patch or just a very unpolished game in general

@@LightningStryke27 Yeah...
@@wonderlilane3724 Yeah, because even the most well-meaning of fans have ideas of how a game "should be," but game design by committee doesn't work.
That makes sense
"This month we were uh...optimising keyboard inputs and fixing a jump mechanic bug...is that what you guys want to hear about?" Probably something like that
This is not a good take. Omori was a kickstarted project. OmoCat *had* to deliver regular updates, because people already gave them money to make the game. At that point, you have a responsibility to your backers to provide them with regular updates, regardless of whether they're "boring" or not. I'm actually kind of upset that OmoCat and their team didn't suffer any real consequences for their absurd radio silence. Yes, Omori is a masterpiece, but maybe take the time to talk to your backers? i believe they are aware of the risk of "scope creep" and that they have it under control, based on this:
1- From their last blogpost, in December 2019:
"And as some assurance: We’re not just randomly building things without an end in site. We know how this story unfolds and as much as we add, our intent is always to evoke the feeling of exploring a vast, surprising new world; one that matches (or exceeds) the scale and diversity of the original game."
2- From Leth's comment in the HK Discord server, in early 2021:

Leth: Well...not in the same sense as HK .
Leth: Now the challenge is to keep ourselves from adding too much and making the game take forever. Not “rushing” but more like... being mindful of scope creep.

When you said "Silksong was announced 929 days ago" I had a midlife crisis at 18.
Leth has mentioned before that they know this can be an issue, to directly quote him in the discord, he said:
"Now the challenge is to keep ourselves from adding too much and making the game take forever. Not 'rushing' but more like... being mindful of scope creep" - 1/15/2021
And for what its worth, the last blogpost back in 2019 also says the following:
"And as some assurance: We’re not just randomly building things without an end in site. We know how this story unfolds and as much as we add, our intent is always to evoke the feeling of exploring a vast, surprising new world; one that matches (or exceeds) the scale and diversity of the original game."

This meant I ended up creating a custom stencil to replicate the wallpaper in the City of Tears and used it in the entire space. I'm patient about Silksong. But the hype is real.
The real Silksong is the friends we made along the way.
I genuinely feel like it's been so long since this game was announced, I'm almost a completely different person
The only hard main boss are the _______ _______, so if you can beat them you are fine.
Would be nice to get a blip every now and then to make sure their still afloat.
that opening noise is NSFW
The content in this game is going to be insanely stacked, I can feel it in my void.
we did it bois
I love reading the Poorly Drawing Hollow Knight series every day, as well as watching Daily Silksong News
I say you don't, it will make the wait longer for you. If that's not that big of a deal then continue ofc, but if you find yourself waiting for Silksong a lot then shut yourself off from most Hollow Knight related stuff
I'm glad that they are adding more stuff into silksong. For me, HK wouldn't be HK without the extra content.

I’m still Hyped for Zote Boat.
Mat's music is incredible! I'm glad you enjoy it too mossbag!😁
Back like a year ago, the komi-san fandom kept saying there will never ever be an anime, and then boom, here we are today. We're all gonna make it brah.
The only frustration I had was not receiving any information whatsoever, to the point that I feared cancellation. Knowing that the game is still being worked on is all I need. You keep doing you, Team Cherry
