      mind where you have your shoulders. if you are out of line with them it will send the board in that direction and youll catch an edge... and try to keep your weight on your back foot.. having a slight equal duck stance helps to... i ride duck footed around 15 degrees on both bindings and fairly wide ... try to get use to a wide stance over narrow... narrow feels more comfortable at first but youll get used to wide and be happy you did

    • @desiraemuhlestein1763
      @desiraemuhlestein1763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude same. The only time I can ride flat is getting off the lift or skating through a flat spot. If I'm fully strapped in and I try to ride flat, I ALWAYS catch an edge and injure myself. Those flat spots have always been the most dangerous and difficult to get through for that reason. It took me the first two years of boarding to realize that I can never, ever ride flat. After probably 6 years I was like, ok, I've been doing this for awhile, im pretty good at it by down, let me try to ride flat in this flat area because even keeping an edge here is really difficult. I caught an edge (going snails pace) maybe 10 feet down and ate shit so hard I thought I broke my elbow.

    • @ShaZei
      @ShaZei 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@desiraemuhlestein1763 feels kind of odd to me. I'm bombing those single and double black diamond slopes almost all the time as long as there is nobody and never really had problems. As long as the board is straight and there is no large bumps it shouldn't affect it at all. To catch one something would have to push your board sideway or the bump or hole would have to be larger than the tip of the board.
      I did one time got thrown down the hill when I was a kid but it was not due to an edge, from my vague memory it must have been some kind of hole since it started with a few front flips.
      My guess is that as long as you can keep your board straight & momentum is present, you shouldn't have problems. From memory, I thinks it used to mostly be a problem at low speed but it probably was due to lack of balance.

    • @desiraemuhlestein1763
      @desiraemuhlestein1763 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShaZei Yeah, most of the time, this in the instance of going super slow after loosing momentum in a flat spot where it's near impossible to keep an edge or switch back and forth. But even when I was going like normal down a slope in the beginning I was catching an edge left and right mostly due to inexperience or something/someone throwing me off. I also haven't ridden any board except for my beginner rocker until now (I have a hybrid) and my god is that a night and day difference. The rocker would washboard over all the little inconsistencies in the snow and just be bouncing around all over the place. The hybrid i have now just cuts right through like butter and is so much easier to control. That being said, I still don't dare to try riding flat. It makes me too nervous from all the times I've almost thrown myself off a cliff or almost seriously injured myself (I'm still reaping the consequences). I also don't feel like I'd be as in control since you basically give up all speed management doing that. Going fast makes me nervous, just knowing if I were to catch an edge bombing down a hill, I'd be done for. Black diamonds are a no go for me lol At this point, it's just a confidence thing.

    • @kylesalisbury4886
      @kylesalisbury4886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Flat. The edge digs into the snow and causes friction. However, you can still get a lot of speed on your edge and still have control. If you go really fast while going flat, you're bound to catch an edge. Trust me, I've been there.

    • @Rockb149
      @Rockb149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Always carving. Flat basing is what causes so much friction that slows you down

    • @puckoberto
      @puckoberto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Arwin Then you have to vax your board cause flatbase is faster.

    • @leightonslanga7465
      @leightonslanga7465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Depends on the snow. Edge is much faster on ice but tends to sink in on the really soft stuff and rides a bit slower

    • @elp1291
      @elp1291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as you carve and don't skid (and your edges are in decent shape), being on an edge will **always** be faster.
      Wax helps lower the friction between the board and the snow, but the physics is still the same :
      Less contact means less friction and more potential speed. And the thin metal edge isn't going to slow you down (because it's not covered in wax) given it's width compared to the fact you reduce your contact surface by at least half when on an edge compared to flat.
      If you pick more speed on flat than on an edge it just means your carving game isn't on point yet.
      I haven't ever been stuck on a flat run since I grasped this, and even outrun skiers.

    I’m sorry fall line? That’s no how physics works, there is an effect, subtle shifts in your weight that will affect the direction you go while “flat” even the snowball you show has curves, bumps, that affect the next way it bounces and in that clip you see that in action. You can say it’d be like standing in a sled, but the more you shift from heel to toe and vice versa it affect the lean or tilt of the base of the board even without riding an edge, I feel like you’ve gone so pro you’ve lost the nuisance of the basics man.

    The more JB videos I watch the more terrible advice I hear.
    Some poor person is going to (or probably already has) crack their noggin because you said riding flat can pick up speed fast...
    To a beginner rider that sounds like "Do ThIS To gO FaSTeR." and they are going to catch an edge because they have no idea how to control themselves at speed.
