It's s piece of music written by an "experienced" man 66 years old. Hence my take away is that this is such a refreshing and energetic, yet compact and crisp concerto that is impressive for an individual of that age. Style is bit "vintage" for 1809, clearly looking more back to Mozart than to the already mature Beethoven. It's purely classic, without any split romantic moment, but I would never consider it a mere repetition of old language or a nostalgic music for a golden age that is lost. There's no impression of fatigue nor of any boring "deja vu". It's a little miracle of an old master who remains young inside and loves what he does. Great choice and excellent interpretation from this young lady
I admire this kind composers. It's a pity that they lost their conversance in this times because they deserves better. Vanhal was admired by Joseph Haydn. With this music you always make my days, love you for it! As always kindness from Rotterdam.
Unfortunately, Vanhal stopped writing secular music at one point. Vanhal composed 70 symphonies, a large number of string quartets and music for piano. He was so loved that he could live of his compositions. During a trip to Italy, however, he began to suffer from mental disorders. He got religious delusions and he heard voices who told him to destroy all his secular works and to restrict himself to religious music. In this period he composed some 60 masses, numerous litanies and religious arias and also the Stabat Mater in f minor. It is good that he later returned to the piano (if not the symphonies) ... so brilliant - Thank you for the upload sibarit101.
Thank you for adding this information from Vanhal's biography. I also consider him a great composer, especially since he was one of the few composers who did not work for any patron for the last 30 years of his life.
Actually, considering his very humble background, it is even more impressive that this man pursued a freelance career as a composer and a musician. Much more so than Mozart, whose father was a composer and being a composer was his mere destiny.
Freelancer ... good term, it fits perfectly to him! Without an consistent support and without an economically secure he became one of the most popular and even one of the most renowned instrumental composers ... I am glad that some of his music has reached us! Thank you!
Certainly not the most demanding piano concerto ever written. However, Dianne Baar pulls it off with a crisp well rounded performance, using ritardandos and accelerandos expertly.

A nice and beautiful concerto, and also a pretty girl 😁

Of course, I don't listen to a masterpiece here, but it brings me a big smile, and mvt.2 is very beautiful (it reminded me of Hummel). Thanks, David!
