Matt Gibson can you give me an email address to contact him? I'm a double bass player from Mexico looking for options in other countries for get my degree... Greetings!
Rare to hear a double bass concerto! Vanhal's concerto is well structured & extremely musical! Very well performed too! Thanks for the post. Jamshed Delvadavala from Mumbai.
Jamshed Delvadavala This a beautiful concerto from the Classic period you can listen from the romantic era too, try Koussevitzky concerto or Bottesini concerto number 1 or 2, also on this days you can listen to Andres Martin concerto, this last one is fantastic, bass players are playing it on important competitions.
Great concerto and great performance. I can't help but notice the similarity in both the theme and musical pattern between this one and Dittersdorf doublebass concerto
Bravo, a wonderful performance! Herr Brown's Bass playing is beautiful and lyrical, with wonderful intonation and articulation! All of those bowed trills, arpeggios, and A4 notes, as well as the A arpeggio up to E5 on the cadenza, are very tough on a double bass. The Detroit Symphony must be proud to have him as their principal bassist!
Kevin’s Dad was my computer science professor and advisor throughout college. And they look so similar… god what an incredible sound. Esp on the G string
It was a very good performance by orchestra and soloist alike. I could not hear the soloist all that well, but I do know he hit all the right notes, as a double bassist myself!
Excelent . Very nice tone and musical . Also lucky to play under the baton of Maestro Slatkin .I sudied with Henry Loew in 70,s and enjoyed St Louis sym. With. Mr. Slatkin coducting (47 years ago.)
If I'm not mistaken, I believe he composed it himself. Check out this video from Fox 2 Detroit where he's giving them a preview of the concerto for reference: www.fox2detroit.com/good-day/114031943-video
Judging from the fingering, he's using the usual solo tuning in fourths (F#-B-E-A from bottom to top), instead of the late 18th century Viennese tuning
“There is no bad music. Just bad performances.” - somebody must have said this, and if not, I just did. This is a competent performance, but not an inspired one. Some music sort of plays itself even in the hands of students, other music requires more imagination in the hands of a master to bring to life. Sadly, being able to play the notes in tune and with nice tone quality doesn’t make one a musical master. And I think the double bass deserves more than just impressing people that such a lumbering instrument didn’t sound all scratchy and out of tune. This performance achieves that, but not much more.
Not really boring concerto, the performer doesn’t do anything interesting, he plays with good technique and intonation, but he does nothing to elevate the piece.
Pretty proud right now to be able to say that Kevin Brown is my teacher.

Agreed isn't Dittersdorf's also great fun, like his DB and Viola Concerto, completely mad but lovely!
0:27 allegro moderato
6:45 adagio
15:45 allegro moderato
Thank you!
I feel like a fool for missing out on this. How rare it is to see a Bass concerto...
Wait till you hear about bottesini

I cant believe he memorized an entire 20 minute peice
Splendid performance, although he seems to be afraid of hurting the bass hahahah
he makes it look so easy i-

I'm learning to play this but the arrangement is a mess of moveable c cleffs
Napkin shoplifta if you can’t read different clefs you shouldn’t be playing this

I am almost completely losing my hearing but this doesn't sound like gut strings to me. Compare this with London Symphony Orchestra version :))
one of the weirdest French bow grips I have seen
Larry King i’ve seen a whole lot worse trust me haha
Lets see your French grip.
paint me like one of your french grips

Rinat also had a unusual bow grip and he is the goat so....
Excellent orchestra and soloist. Just a boring concerto RIP
