never thought highschool anime girls riding tanks could be a masterpiece. I was really amused by the scene where they all discussed the strategy with all stereotypes of countries fought in WW2
wtf, why wasnt this recommended to me before?? this is such a well-thought analysis for a series that is not usually put under this kinds of lens. plus im literally in the middle of editing a girls und panzer essay! highly underrated vid, screw you youtube and here's a like good sir!
The film is a Masterpiece. The battles were awesome. The characters were entertaining. It adds in from best parts from the series and makes 10x better. My jaw dropped at many times at the sheer insanity and ridiculous, but I loved it. Mako leading Morals Commitee out from the shed, the gamer girls working out, the other High-school Girls coming at the last minute to assist Oorai, the Chihatan defense with the rubber Ducky heads, the Finns 1v3ing to help take out Karl, and the Nishizumi Sisters working together in the final battle. Some many funny and epic moments, a 10/10 film.
Finally someone focuses on the action sequences this series has perfected. Thanks for the video. Although some critique : "Playground" and "Finale" should've been expanded further as it felt like you had more to say about what this film did right regarding those two points. On another note, as someone pointed out "The Stakes" you put forth may not be enough to build enough tension for the action scenes to work. I personally find the prospect of Oorai losing a second time to be my "Stakes" but this is YOUR video so dont take this to heart.
No, it's all good! At the end of the day - no matter what the title says - this is all my opinion and I always try to present it that way. I do appreciate you giving the video a shot and hopefully you mostly enjoyed it!
"You can have the best tank in the world, but if you dont have enough ammunition, well, eventually you'll be firing blanks" Wherbs screaming as their PanzerkampfJagdGeschutzfwagen 69 with a 200mm gun and 5 meters of armor cant get on the battlefield because of mechanical failures Awesome work! Im gonna binge through all your vids now and also subbed
Let's not understate that Fuji by Vanilla pairs up with everything. Girls und Panzer really surprised me with how well made it is. It embraces being goofy and I think that helps sell the action.
Side note and unrelated: But in the show the rules state that the shells are made to penetrate the armor of the tank but keep the crew safe and some tanks (Mostly those that have seen combat during the Second World War and prototypes count as well as long as they had a complete model like the Maus which had two prototypes during the war one without a turret and one with and even when these prototypes haven't seen combat they're made an exception.) Which is fine.. to say the least, especially since y'know tank shells can liquefy the crew inside or ignite the gunpowder inside a penetrated shell inside the tank or catch the whole thing on fire but that's neither here nor there. But the one thing I find weird is the green light on bunker busters. The KV-2 was designed to break through the Mannerheim Line in Finland destroying the bunkers that defended the nation and the Karl Gustav artillery tank was the Nazi's answer to the Maginot Line defending France from Germany. And in the show the KV-2 was capable of setting off a chain reaction of massive explosions in a building and the Karl Gustav was like firing Fat Man and Little Boy from a tank they even went the extra mile of attempting to fire the gun point blank and directly at a CV-33. Literally one of THE most unimposing tanks. And It was planning on firing a nuke at it. I don't know how but they somehow miss a tankette with a shell that's 10x the size of the CV let alone a human and was capable of blowing out the stone bridge behind them with the smoke from the detonation encasing the infantry tank (Yes the CV-33 was an infantry tank armed with machine guns I cannot stress this enough) How the Karl Gustav was green lit to partake in a match is beyond me. And how the University wasn't immediately disqualified from the Karl Gustav's crews wreckless endangerment of a participating team members lives by attempting to fire a nuke at a tank that could be easily be pushed over and shot at with a 20mm in one hit is way beyond my comprehension. The shell alone could crush the mini cooper of a tank without being fired, it's that heavy it needed a complicated reload system and a short stubby gun and barrel to compensate for the abismal center of gravity when aimed upwards. The explosion is enough to knock Kuromorimine's Panthers on its back and they wanted to fire it directly into a tank that can't even kill it if it tried. How and why are bunker busters allowed to partake in this sport if it's supposed to put the safety of the participants before all else? At least the Maus is reasonable, it went up against tanks lighter than it so of course it would make light work of them (Still have no idea how it didn't just crush the Hetzer under it's 188 tons of weight) Overall the anime is still one my personal favorites and still has a special place in my heart for introducing me to the anime genre as a whole.
the Maus did cripple the hetzer, its just that the mechanical failures didnt render it immobile for a couple hundred feet. the Karl Gerat is basically implied to be outright banned and it was only the MEXT's influence that it was in the exhibition match. Its also not firing nuclear payloads even if all of Sunflower should have been turned into soup on the direct impact. 600mm of Composition B is still around 2.6 tons of explosive which comes out to around 4 tons of TnT yield.
I've only found three sports anime that I actually like: Girls und Panzer, Bamboo Blade and Taisho Baseball Girls. Four if you count Chihayafuru. Who would think playing cards was such an athletically intense sport?
I’ve been meaning to check out Chihayafuru for ages! A couple of my friends really enjoyed it and think I would, too. I’ll have to dedicate some time to finally checking it out one of these days.
While I agree with a lot of what you said, and I did enjoy this show and movie a lot, I think the "stakes" were kind of weak. I felt like the 12 episodes we got barely gave us enough time of the girls actually attending the school they go to to be worth fighting over. I mean, Miho just kinda got there and it's like she's already super attached to this school over what felt like only a couple weeks? If we got an additional episode or two of them just attending school normally, I think it would have helped.
i think it's because she has to say goodbye to her friends who probably will have been relocated to somewhere else separating each of them tearing most friendships or well that's what i think i mean ooarai is where she meets her friends which kinda makes it special wouldn't you consider the first place you met your friends special? i would
Let’s not mention how the opposite team used a god damn machine of nuclear warfare and they weren’t disqualified immediately I’d also like to bring up the bullsh t scene with the white tank going race car mode and not dying for a good while. Good scene tho.
Yeah, I think my words were "Overwhelming firepower." A rather diplomatic way of putting it lmao And of course yeah there are definite moments of total ridiculousness but it's a world where tank warfare is a legitimized sport so I can suspend my disbelief a bit lmao
I love the fact that the guy went and got the rail gun/mortar authorized for use in matches specifically so it could be used in this match, and did so without any prior knowledge that the other schools would pitch in to even the teams. He wanted Oorai closed so hard that he was going to siege mortar half a dozen tanks. On the off chance that dozens of late war tanks whose commanders were using tablets for communication had any issue smashing less than a dozen early-mid war tanks.
The white tank has the actual ability to drive in wheels in real life but the speed is exaggerated which doesn’t bother me cuz it’s anime meant to be watched for fun
I disagree a bit about the stakes being important. Something that has never felt compelling to me was the drama of GuP, I really don't care about their struggle. Where GuP is impressive to me is that it hits all the high notes of a great action movie without it. Seeing the drama of Pravda retreating form the hill, for example, hits emotionally hard because it does everything a good war movie does - and it hits better because they're all larping and there are no consequences at all. They could elicit an emotional response with just how the scene is portrayed despite the silliness of the show being known. I also think another big plus to this series is how well planned it is. I'm not sure about the main series, but in der Film you can actually pull up a map and follow everything that happens from a top-down view (if you ever visit the town of Oarai, you can absolutely follow the action path, though the scales of some streets are slightly altered). The action hits harder because it's not just an action scene, it's an action scenario. It feels more real than the standard action scene because it's more 3D, characters aren't just where they're at because it's convenient for the immediate scene.
I agree that the drama concerning the closure of Ooarai is rather lackluster, but the underlying theme of rigid traditionalism versus flexibiliity and acceptance has a beautiful subtlety in it. It connects the themes of the threat of closure of Ooarai, the conflict between Miho and her mother and several other subplots like Hana and Mako's family issues in a way that makes these points feel somewhat unique, even when on their own they don't always make sense.
About the drama at pravda retreating from the hill where Nonna, Klara and Alina sacrificed themselves to save Katyusha, it made me laugh so hard. At first I really thought it was like an emotional Hollywood move where they sacrificed themselves to save their leader but then I remembered, oh wait this is safe and no one actually died. And I laughed.
@@ViktarTheBarbarian yeah it’s been really exciting. Even this last race was nerve wracking watching Lewis try to chase down Max. Just hoping there’s no dnfs so we get to enjoy more racing until the end.

The only thing wrong with this series is that there’s not enough of it.
Reminds me a little of Diehard, actually. As the numbers dwindle, so does the space, until it's one on one in an office.

The first thing I thought when I saw the title was no way, Girs und Panzer is already my favorit.

Batallas bien locas pero a la vez bien epicas

When the school shuts down all of them will be relocated to a different school. She’s not fighting for the school, but for her friends
So you would suggest some episodes of 'Girl ohne Panzer

Anyways, thanks for the wonderful analysis of the series! All I saw the past days were negative reviews towards GuP.
