I started the prepping mindset out of fear back in 1999 (Y2K), and began building my pantry up. Two years later, I was a divorced mom of 3 teenagers. I always had food in the house. Then I was able to start a garden, and this opened a whole new world for me.
Now I live on almost 20 acres of land, have three gardens, a greenhouse and chickens. I learned to garden, preserve, can, dehydrate, make my own lotions, tinctures, soaps and more.

I started a food garden because of budget constraints years ago. We save jugs of water, now have supplemental solar power thanks to my smart husband, keep chickens for eggs, meat, garden help, and “therapy,” started an orchard and vineyard, and maybe most importantly stopped buying things that were wasting our money. When I want to buy something special, I am thankful for giving up fast food trips. Just 2 saved visits to the drivethru pays for 2 weeks of chicken feed, or an apple tree, or garden tools, or materials for renovating my kitchen. We (my sister and I) also redid the 50 year old cast iron plumbing drains ourselves, saving several thousand dollars. I am so GLAD to still be cutting shackles off my life by doing for myself wherever possible.

I got fabric, sewing notions, trimmings, from thrift stores
I showed my 9 yr old how to sew her first bag. She was so happy and proud of herself!
    Priceless.
I got more small fabric pieces.
She is going to sew a shopping bag for her family members and teachers ...everyone.
    I got a pattern for a 3x4 quilt for $1!.
    That's our next project.
    I live on social security.
Im sooooo glad God showed me ways to share happiness.

I admit I started prepping out of complete fear. If you’ve ever struggled to feed your children, when you are more financially stable you make sure that your family never goes hungry again. When I rededicated my life to Christ in 2020, something changed in me. Now I view what I have as what I pray will be a blessing to those left behind. I pray over our home and that it will be a safe refuge for them even if for just a short time. That’s my viewpoint now.

Amen to this. That's exactly why we should be preparing. And as a parent who has once had to tell their child there's no food left, it is a perfectly GOOD fear to have. EVERY parent should worry about being able to feed their children (and themselves).

I have so many related stories I could tell!! When we were truckers, we always signed up to do FEMA runs because we like to help people. When Hurricane Michael hit Florida, many truckers were already staged just waiting for the word Go. It could get hairy trying to deliver food, water and supplies. I remember seeing the seaside homes completely leveled to nothing but slabs of concrete, the steel I-beams twisted and lying in a ditch, the two little girls squatted down rummaging through a pile of clothing for something that fit, and the recovery dogs sniffing debris piles looking for people who were trapped or otherwise. I remember people lining both sides of the road, jumping up and down, clapping their hands and cheering when we all rolled in with much needed food and water. I remember the people pulling out their own bbq grills and smokers that weren't damaged and they fired them up so they could cook for their community, not just their own families. We saw a great coming together of Americans, people helping each other. It didn't matter who you voted for, what your orientation was, where you worked or what car you drove. Through the devastation, the American people came together as one.
I grew up poor and I've never had much in the way of finances. My parents taught us to tuck back food and other necessities. It's in my DNA. Where we live now, I keep my plastic juice jugs filled with water. I change them out every 6 months. I wish they were glass. Last year, I got up and our water pressure was really low. After a little while, it ceased running at all. No water for hundreds of homes. All this was caused by some smarty pants 10 miles down the road who failed to Call Before He Dug! He hit the water line and it took several hours to be repaired. So, even though plastic jugs are not ideal, it's better than nothing.
I use electricity to cook most of our meals so I don't have to use up our propane. When the power goes out, we can still cook. Last winter, we had folks coming to our house so their kids could get a bath and a hot meal.
Whenever someone offers us a can of food or something because they don't want or like it, I always receive it with open arms. Because while we may not like it either, it could be bartered or help someone else out.
I have a bad habit of hanging onto clothes that are too small, thinking I'll lose weight. Ha! Good thing I do, though. A family down the road had a house fire in winter and lost everything. Her size was the exact size clothing I had been hanging onto.
It is true, God works in mysterious ways.

Well said! Before Y2K I was a drop point for Azure. Many were preparing and I stored away lots of wheat, beans dehydrated and canned goods. So Y2K never happened and I'm sure some laughed at me, but then my neighbors husband lost his job and I was able to help her, she would come over and grind wheat and bake, make things out of the legumes that I had, etc. Then my husband lost his job, so needless to say that food came in handy. I love being prepared and right now I look in the pantry and see that I bought all that food when it was about 30% less than what its going for now. Thats $ in the bank.

I'd been taught to have a winter pantry and how to keep a home without "products", but now it's just the quality of what we have to work with - the poisoned food, the questionable (homicidal) medical care system...A lot of what we'd have done normally to live simply isn't possible to do the same way anymore. The chaos gave us the opportunity to slow down and get back to much older ways again we had lived in our youth. But we had to tweak things given our age and my husband's chronic condition. We can't do what we could do thirty years ago. I'm truly sorry people suffered, but I am grateful for the blessings we were given because we're a lot better off now.

Frugality and preparedness is a wonderful lifestyle no matter what the circumstances. I was raised this way (somewhat). I actually started bulk buying when I was working 10 hour shifts, 7 days on/7 days off. Both of my parents were very sick in a neighboring state. I would spend several days with them on my off week. I just couldn’t go grocery shopping all of the time. I continued doing this after they passed. I’d buy a bunch of meat for us to eat and an equal amount to can. This has been great.

My parents instilled a sense of Preparedness for Life Events whether, financial, health, civic unrest, natural disasters or unemployment.
Over the years, I have learned different forms, methods & ways to "Be Prepared".
Planting a "Forever Garden" is always the first thing i do when moving to a new location. The next step is a Seasonal Garden then Microgreen & Aquaculture Gardening to help provide supplemental Fresh Fruits & Vegetables year round.
Stocking Fruits, Herbs, Vegetables, Grains & Meats in Dehydrated, Fermented, Canned (Dry Heat, Waterbathed & Pressure), Commercial Canned/Boxed, Frozen, Bottled (Liquors) & Rendered/Jerky Products is the last things on the List of Prepareness in the Four Corners Kitchen of Food & Water categories.
I was overjoyed when a very dear TH-camr finally put a name to my storage method of Fresh-Refrigerator; Canned & Boxed-Working Pantry; Meats, Fruits & Vegetables-Freezer; and all of the above in Bulk in the Long-Term Pantry. Now, I don't seem so crazy in my Preparedness for Life Events.
Even though i was raised in the Church and was Blessed with Guiding Parents & Faith Community, I finally understood that i needed to Prepare my Heart.
In 2012. i was in a serious accident and White Lighted.
Unfortunately, I was sent back to here (NDE). After 30 days of being pissed with being sent back, I made my Peace with God's Plan and each morning we start the day with a what do, who do or where do you want me today, Lord, conversation then I follow His lead.

I always kept "a few extras" in the house. Then, in January of 2020, it was like a lightbulb finally went off. I remember clearly thinking that I needed to stock up and do better because we weren't going to be able to get things from the stores...and sure enough...Then, I quit my classroom teaching job in 2021, began working part-time from home, and being more frugal became more important. Now, having my pantry stocked, canning and preserving, making homemade (just about everything) instead of buying store-bought, repairing instead of buying new, and having more time to expand and work in my garden is a way of life.

Your comment is incredibly vague.. do you mean storage buildings? Storage units? Surely you don't think storing anything, which is what your comment says, is useless. Storing food and water is extremely important. I can think of so many ways that storage is important, especially to our dog kennel. If you leave things that most people would store out for dogs, they will be destroyed and or peed on. That would ruin our heaters that we use for them in the cold months. So we store them. Storage isn't useless at all.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@AmysAttitude It was clearly meant to be a general statement. However you choose to preserve and store your food or however you can. Under your beds, in your cabinets, in your closets, in as spare room, in a pantry, whatever you are able to do. It will all be different for each person but as long as people are doing SOMEthing, they are basically "printing their own money"

    @reibersue4845 ปีที่แล้ว +1

2021 was my pivotal moment. I saw how things were going to go downhill fast. It's also the time I reconnected with God after ignoring Him for many years. Trusting God is what keeps the fear at bay. God is certainly good, all the time. In 2021 I lived in a terrible city and I was trying to figure out, as I went through preparations, how I was going to protect us physically as well as protect what I had done for preparedness. It took an exhausting amount of time researching home security in a grid down scenario. Then circumstances happened that gave me an opportunity to convince my husband to move to a much more rural location. Then my focus turned back to preparedness. It's been a year and things are moving forward. We have chickens, I'm trying to conquer solid rock ground to cultivate into sustainable gardens. I've collected a lot of things for off grid projects so if the EMP comes I have supplies on hand and a plan to continue those projects, like rainwater catchment. Did I say, God is good? My biggest concern was a water source. I was searching out seep springs or anything to have a constant source of water. Last fall, we cleared out some blackberry canes in our field and hidden among the canes was a capped well. We have a well for the house but electricity is needed to run the pump. So I researched and found a deep well hand pump that would work. But, the company said it would take 12 months to full my order. I called a Well drilling company nearby and asked if they could get me one sooner. Guess what? They had the pump I needed, with the amount of pipe I needed for the depth of my well, and the thing is, it had been ordered by a customer last year, who never picked it up so they had it in storage. That is Providence at work.
My tip for preppers. I go through my day thinking about, how would I do this task if we had no electricity, power tools, etc. I then get the things I need to do the tasks without power. How will you heat your space in the winter? How will you cook? What are you going to do about sanitation? Those everyday things you now take for granted, think about what you will do if it is not there.

Something made him decide to ask if she had any other weapons in her vehicle. She then went on to tell him of several others in different locations. Finally, he says: ma'am, are you afraid of anything? She looks him in the eye, grins, and says: absolutely nothing!

The one thing I find so strange, people learn about all the hardships of humanity over the centuries when we are in school and as adults panic at the thought of grid down like we will be dead in days. Even during the black plague (often called the Black Death), the worse time in modern history, not even half of the population of Europe died. People are stronger than they think. We really have had it so easy this last half century that people live in fear of hardships.

I started a garden and canning/preserving as soon as I could when I got married because I wanted to make sure I didn't screw up what a good marriage was supposed to be. Sounds funny. As a kid I was told I needed to learn to cook and sew in order to be a good wife. I didn't understand until after I was married what that meant. Now saved, I understand it even more. Now we prep which has allowed up to have jobs we want instead of jobs we need which allows us to live a happier life.

I was raised by parents who were born in 1920&1925 they were in their late teens during the Great Depression and while dad was away at ww2 mom dealt with feeding my older brothers during wartime food rations. They taught us to be prepared for when there isn’t anything to buy or it’s to expensive to buy. Being raised on a beef & dairy cattle farms, raising acres of corn, pumpkins, hay gardens preserving by every method, butchering all of our livestock curing and smoking the meat and pressure canning it. I still live in the same area and during the winter we have ice storms sometimes 4/6 per winter one of our most severe ice storms left us without electricity and water for 31 days and roads impassable for over a week. Raising large gardens, herbs, medicinals meat , having orchards, berries, grapes and nut trees, preserving and butchering, processing and then Buying in bulk dry goods etc and stocking our pantries and all other necessities have never been out of fear but always about being ready for what might come. It’s always been just a way of life. It’s also 100 mile round trip to get to any Kroger, aldi, Walmart etc. we have a small grocery store 40 mile round trip but milk is $4.98 a gallon the 100 mile trip Walmart is $2.25. That’s also one of the reasons that we keep prepared and stocked up. We shop every 3-4 months and in between if we have a drs appointment. Trust in the LORD. GOD is good all of the time. May God bless you and your family.

Great video, Heidi! Yes, and amen. I now have a part-time casual job in tourism, whidh l am very grateful for! Only 3 shifts per week, but with recent price-hikes, l am doing okay now, and much better than on govt assistance alone! I know that in Nov, the down-season will begin, and shifts will be an hour shorter. So. Every time l go grocery shopping, l am buying a couple of extra groceries, more if they are on a good special, and squirelling them away, making up a week's worth of food at a time. It's been a bit hard, but so far, l have 6 weeks nearly complete. God will look after me, but l am seeing that groceries could easily be the thing that my off-season pay won't be able to cover. And there are a limited number of times that you can go to a charity for a food parcel. While God is providing this work (and sometimes an extra relieving shift!), l will endeavour to put away, while the season is good. And God will look after the rest. And yes, there was a time when house insurance was fair and reasonable....now, it seems that you have to have the money already put aside to fix things, in order to pay the excess, to claim the money to fix it. My excess used to be $50...now it's $200...so basically any job needing $200 worth of repairs, or any item ruined to that value, is not insured... do it yourself. Yet l have paid thousands into the fund, over the years, and never had a holiday 'cos l can't afford it...l'm too busy paying the insurance! 😠 Something wrong with that system. And so, we do what we can with what we have in our hand, and pray to God for wisdom and provision. Thankyou, God, for being So Good! And thankyou Heidi! 🙂❤✝️

It is always good to prepare not just with a mind for ourselves and our families, but in times of extreme hardship, God may use you to bless those who are less fortunate than yourself around you. Learn from the ant. (Proverbs 6:6-8). It is good to prepare for our physical needs, also friends, let us be mindful to prepare for our spiritual health . For Jesus said “What can it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). The soul is that part of you that will live on after life here on earth is done. Seek the Lord while he may be found. (Luke 9:25). See also Luke 12: 15-21 and Isaiah 55: 1-3. God bless you all.😊

I suspect in this day and age, it would be pretty hard to find any young person willing to actually work. We’ve had a older person here also. Tried that first. He did real well first couple of months. Then we began getting all his belongings here, and everything fell through. I’m sure part is is, as we expect a little something for what we’re offering…. Even most of the older folks are this way, “ ENTITLED”. I’m praying and tell my husband not to stress, as god will send someone when things get REALY bad, that will respect and appreciate what we have to offer. As of right now, we don’t even want to consider it, although we could REALY use the help. Even tried to find someone to work a day or two a week for pay, but everyone wants 20$ a hour!! We’ll do it ourselves for that. Thanks for all you do! Have learned a lot from you.

I needed this. Thank you! I've been learning more ways of doing the things I grew up doing. I battle my health issues to do them. We expanded our garden this year and I guess I have a touch of garden envy( for lack of a better term) I'm dehydrating things like peppermint and onions etc greens but I was really feeling like I failed and I don't live in fear. I work towards being more prepared. This video just resonated with me because it made me realize that the sound of my dehydrator running now is more of my own insurance. It's preserving our blessing for both my family and others who may need it. Thank you for this! Thank you so very much. I am in migraine and had to basically cancel the day.
