I think it is common advice to start your diesel engine when you’re out in de heavy thunderstorm. A lightning strik may have you loosing all electronics on board, but a running diesel will just happily continue to run.
This would be another pro of a parallel system.
I agree completely with this analysis: internal combustion engines are dirty and inefficient at idle and have a very limited rpm range of good efficiency, whereas electrics do not. Use the two in a complimentary fashion.
Avoid a single point of failure.
Surely this was all worked out in the 1930's for the Uboats.
