No one realizes that Milo was volunteering to carry his friend down! I'll bet he wishes he could. Phil is truly amazingly devoted and so content in that role of devoted retainer to his king, queen and princess.

When our pets are well loved, they return the favor and gift of love 100+ fold and there is something magical that they share within their hearts to make up for the fact that they cannot talk to us. They have this intuition and know exactly where they need to be and what they need to do to take care of our every emotional and spiritual need. Phil is a beautiful example of this and this family is so blessed! XO
Phil is so wonderful for wanting to be with you and especially to be there when you wake up. Too cute! You might need to bring forward any plans to improve the safety of the staircase for him, as he is now determined to be upstairs as much as possible. If going out and leaving him at home you will need to shut doors so he can't access the staircase. I'd be tempted to try sliding him down on a giant plastic tray (don't laugh, lol), with Shane walking below him on the stairs. Another idea, once Phil is upstairs, is to put a barrier across the top of the stairs, if you're at home without Shane. Phil would be safe and comfortable up there with a bowl of water while you pop downstairs. I would hate to see any of you get injured.
Yes, stairs can be very dangerous and nobody wants anything to happen.
When my dog was very old, we used a sling that went around her belly. We could hold her like a suitcase and eat her up and down the stairs.
So sweet Philly Bear! What a way to wake for sure! Toward the end, it looked as if he wanted back up! I think he likes it up there!

Protective Philly Bear. So cute he came up to see you. I worry he’ll hurt himself going up when you don’t know he’s doing it. Happy Shane carried him down. Those kind of stairs make me nervous going up/down as a person, can only imagine how pets feel.
@@bkm2797 Same here, I get worried sick with each new video! There are simple fixes that could be done with less than a few hours work, and they could limit access while they wait, too. Phil would cope with the inconvenience - they live in the moment only. Better than getting injured, which is big deal for any senior dog, or for a much needed Dad who can't afford to get injured right now. Some kind of stairlift or goods lift would be reasonably affordable compared to a full person lift. They cost a bomb. Could put a hoist on a fixed rail along the stairs, from the ceiling of the top floor. Sling Phil in the hammock, tighten the cable and press the button. If it's only used for Phil and no one or nothing heavier, I believe it could be designed and used safely. Otherwise might need to install a costly beam. Decent barriers around the top and bottom of the staircase would keep him out, so he'd have to be slung up to get there. And we could all breathe a sigh of relief, lol.
I'm going to throw my 2 cents in, I think that until y'all can get exactly what you want for the steps, I would definitely get the stuff they make for stairs. Very good gripping on the bottom, carpet on the top. Plus, I'd try one other thing if it's possible. I'd put cardboard or poster board behind each step. The see thru steps are pretty but they mess with my vision. Since he's a senior dog, his vision might not be as good as it was. And, for mummy, maybe number the steps on the cardboard. It might help you later on in your pregnancy to know how many more steps you have, since the bump will obscure your ability to see your feet.
Just a thought, all of us adore y'all and we want everyone to be safe.
@@robinaddis-vaughn7271 That's a great idea, numbering the steps! I never thought about the issue of getting around one's baby bump while using stairs. A more grippy surface would be a help to all, but I think the biggest issue for Phil right now is that in order to descend the stairs, he has to put all his weight on his front legs, while he is positioned downwards, at quite an angle. His back legs don't have the muscle strength they used to, plus it hurts his joints to use them at such an angle. Arthritic seniors, whether dog or human, can easy slip and fall, causing serious injury. And in a dog, their disease can progress more rapidly than we expect or notice. Phil's functioning in the other house may have been a bit better than it is now (I have had several senior pets over the years and so learned from experience.)
@@islandlife756 I have lupus so I can sorta understand Phil's pain. Mine is my skin, the muscles, joints and bone, it's constant pain, it's awful. Has she said how old Phil is?
@@robinaddis-vaughn7271 my daughter n law has Lupus so i know what u r going thru. it's a very nasty disease..her Dr. told her that her kidneys have to high of a protein..last time that happened she was n the hospital for 3 months..my thoughts and prayers being sent ur way. !!!!
His coloring is looking great again! It's a good thing Shane has a strong back. I had to carry my 85lb golden across a park in Boston back to the car after he hurt himself. People thought it was cute. I was trying to not die. And then take him up three flights of stairs to my condo. And not die. The things we do for our big old boys.

Might have to put up a baby gate at the bottom and maybe the top too (of the stairs). So Phil doesn’t go up or down when you aren’t around. That way he won’t have any accidents. 🐾❤️🐾

As a parent of a four year old, male malamute myself (Yukon) I know that there's nothing that can separate the house wolf from its family. Least of all something as piddly as stairs. They will always be with you. I have a couple of broken doors to prove it. 🥰

Dogs like routine. As hard as it is for Phil to come upstairs, he’s going to do it just like he did in the old house. Plus dogs get very clingy as they get old, add in the baby bump, he wants to be near you. Milo came to supervise😂
Too dangerous those stairs we are getting carpet put on our wooden stairs as I’m petrified my dog will kill himself on them. Maybe they should put babygate on at bottom

Philly Bear is one of the sweetest pups ever he came up stairs to protect his mom . Have youns tried Hydrotherapy for his arthritis it seem to have helped Key and Sherpa .
The video was gorgeous, thank you for sharing with us. I think Phil needs a ramp to get up on the bed and anywhere else more easily now. I counted his respiratory rate after climbing onto the bed and it was well above the normal range. High RR is a indicator of pain, effort (probably the main reason here), and or excessive heat. Was the room especially warm at the time? Either way, some ramps around the place would be great for him, and would extend his quality of life I am sure. He didn't know what the upstairs world was like before you guys took him up there, and he loves it. Because they live in the moment he doesn't know it's going to be difficult and potentially dangerous to come back downstairs. And Shane, I'll be blunt, put on some footwear so you don't slip on the stairs, especially while carrying your precious but heavy doggo. I've slipped wearing socks many times and I don't want you to have to learn the hard way.
