i have been wrenching on cars and trucks for over 40 years and I'm here to say you did this wrong there was no cussing no smashed fingers no lost tools you just had in your hand.
Yep, one time I was changing the EGR valve in my 2010 Wrangler and my neighbor comes over and says “hey, everything ok ?” I was cussing so much doing it I didn’t even realize it.
ARP 665-1010 are a direct swap for the 12point 13mm hub bolts and that gets you 12mm 6 point black oxide bolts that never rust break or fight you if you live up in the rust belt like me.
DON'T FORGET!! If the axle(s) has never been out, keep a look out for the 4 plastic axle guides that are used only when the axle was originally assembled at the factory, there's 2 on each axle. Just give a quick look in the axle tube and make sure they are not in there (they may have come out with the axles). Just toss them out, they are not needed as the tube interior is probably not smooth enough for them to slide in. If you don't get them out, you could mess up your seals by shoving them into or through the seal and causing a big leak. Your not going to want to change the axle seals in your driveway, it's a pita. I've seen it multiple times in that someone has changed their joints, and caused a leak and these were the culprits. The whole job is easy peasy if you have a rust free jeep, living in the central NY rust belt makes this job take waaay longer than it should.
If you take the part number off those axles and add a C to the end it at Oreilly's it will bring up the same shafts but for fleet and extreme duty and has a smaller boot almost like an RCV boot and are advertised as stronger
I always use My Palm as a hammer !! that way I don't have to watch out for my fingers when using a real hammer!! been doing that for 40 years now !! But you do it your way !! Thanks for the great Videos on thing I can upgrade My Jeep's with or help me when I'm fixing mine just by watching to see if someone else has had the same problem to
I’m confused why it would affect the alignment….i get that it will narrow your track width a tiny bit…but I don’t see it affecting toe caster or camber….what am I missing?
@@BryanRT326I failed to put a dust shield back on when I did ball joints and it caused a popping in the front locker when you turned the wheel to the left, so I’m assuming the difference in axle alignment is just enough to cause things to bind up inside the differential, not the wheel alignment.
My daily is a '05 LJ and I recently subscribed as a good bit of the XJ stuff can be applied to TJ/LJs. I never heard of anyone in the TJ world online talking about CV joints in the front axle. I've been going through the underneath stuff on the LJ a bit at a time for a year or so now. My next big job planned for my Jeep was going to be new front bearings and u-joints on the front axle as I'm pushing 175k on the original stuff. I think I'm going to cv joints now.
If your hubs are stuck in the axle, you can use a 3/8 drive extension and put it against the axle tube turn the wheel till the other end is against the hub and turn, it’ll pop out.
You are an amazing resource. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I got a Cherokee because of your channel and it’s a blessing to find things in the videos and comments like specs for bolts to swap out for those god awful caliper bolts and part numbers for CV axels
Funny this video popped back up in my feed again, I was talking a break from changing shocks on my LJ. Also thinking that I should do this swap. One of the u-joints has 255151 miles on it. The other one was replaced 6 years ago. That one wasn't to bad even though my 36mm socket was in storage 50 miles away. Changed u-joint with hub assembly attached. It seemed easier than without it.
Just FYI you can do this on the older 2 piece shafts from xj/yj put there is plastic collar in on the side toward driver in the casting hole it supports the end of shaft when it's not spinning its behind the seal it has to be remove knock it out from the far side with a pipe or long extension the cv axle won't fit threw it and it's not needed
@yermoffroad they will if you remove that stupid plastic collar and I'm not 100% sure all axle tubes have it I watched a lot of vids on it and only one mentioned it and my 1991 had the collar
Oh and they sell 6 point wheel hub bearing bolts which i got as well, to get rid of that headache of a mess the 1/2 is always too tight like you said pain in the arse
You're awesome man! THANK YOU FOR THIS! Also, GREAT seeing a TJ on here. Exactly what I'm working on (2005 Rubicon). Thanks again! Looks like the only CV axles for the Rubicon 44 front end are the super pricey RCV's.
I have a set of CV shafts I keep as spares to get on and off the trail. Only because I rebuilt my u-joint shafts before I figured out the CV shafts would fit my TJ
Hi Dex Great channel. My wife has a 2002 Jeep TJ with a Dana 30 front axle. I recently heard a 30-spline Dana 30 carrier is pretty tough. Is there a set of CV axles for a 30-spline Dana 30 carrier?
I never tried hitting the bearing from the outside I always hit on the heads of the bolts that hold it on with a brass hammer. did it with a regular hammer one time and boy was it a pain in the ass to get a socket back on the mushroomed bolt heads
Dex. Give them an alternative for when the 12 point bolt strips. Happened to me on Labor Day and had to use my angle grinder and slice the head off. O’Rilley has the Dorman bolts to replace for about 40$
What? No love on that list for the YJ? I know the D30 in the YJ has the 3pc axle with the CAD but you can put the shafts from an XJ in the axle Is it safe to assume this will fit as well once you got the appropriate seals and CAD delete?
So what’s the part number for the precision cv axle?? I walked into orileys to get a set for my xj and they didn’t show anything in their catalog.. someone help me out here!!
Can you do a complete video lunchbox locker uninstall on a Dana 35 with it in the vehicle, for some reason no one does a complete uninterrupted video on it
Quck question on part numbers There is a $100 difference in price between the CH8221 and CH8221C. For the CH8220 and CH8820C it's $50 on Oreilly's web site.....what's the difference?
@@intentsmodz just double checked the site...I beiieve it stands for "extream climate" special boot and special grease....I think I'll pass on the "c's" for double the price
what cv shafts did u use? what vehicle are they for or what part number did you use? i really want to swap my 2004 TJ with a dana 30 front axle to the cv shafts.
comment below mentions : captain_awesome 's reply to - people want part numbers - Ch-8221 and Ch8220 And a comment above said if you add a C to the end of the number it’ll pull up a fleet version of the axles with a smaller boot similar to rcvs 3 @captain_awesome Also consider the heavy duty versions with CH8220HDX and CH8221HDX through Rockauto for ~$150 shipped both axles. Same as the C mentioned at Oreillys but considerably less cost for the same axle. Wish I knew about them before I ordered the regulars but doubt I need the heavy duty ones anyway.
Kinda funny after hearing for years how the CV's in my "soccer mom" WJ were going to explode at every turn or hill. Seems the needle has swung the other way. I did spend the big money recently with a set of RCV's, if you're serious wheeling they are well worth the money. I do run only 33 pie cutters but with 4.56 gearing and a healthy 4.7 (08 and up cams really wakes the older ones up) a stock CV has puked it's guts once on me.
i have been wrenching on cars and trucks for over 40 years and I'm here to say you did this wrong there was no cussing no smashed fingers no lost tools you just had in your hand.
I didn't hear any cursing either.
It must actually be that easy
I must say it is very nice not to hear cussing in a video!
Yep, one time I was changing the EGR valve in my 2010 Wrangler and my neighbor comes over and says “hey, everything ok ?” I was cussing so much doing it I didn’t even realize it.
Incase anyone was wondering, this works on a 99xj. Bent my yolk yesterday and saw this. CVs came in today and worked perfectly. Dex is a lifesaver.
ARP 665-1010 are a direct swap for the 12point 13mm hub bolts and that gets you 12mm 6 point black oxide bolts that never rust break or fight you if you live up in the rust belt like me.

Thanks for showing the TJ love.
Thanks a TON for this follow up video. It answered my questions about CV axles and Dana 30 axles.
Maaaaaan! Thanks to your advice I did this about 8 months ago and haven't regretted it since! Cheaper and absolutely no problems at all!
DON'T FORGET!!

Thank you so much for this! Easier than I imagined.
I feel like I was wrenching at my buddies house watching this video. 10/10 a Bro in this video 🤙
I usually put anti sieze on the hub spines and around the bearing where it fits in the housing, keep the water and dirt out.

Good tip. I will try to look it up.
Awesome thanks for the info !
Do you know what the vehicle these shafts come out of? He never mentioned it the video. Not sure what the "donor" vehicle is or even the part numbers.
Thank you for a fallow up video, much appreciated

I always cut the dust shield off and just leave the part we’re the stud go through. That way it doesn’t cause any problems with alignment
I’m confused why it would affect the alignment….i get that it will narrow your track width a tiny bit…but I don’t see it affecting toe caster or camber….what am I missing?

If you put anti seize on the hub where it goes into the axle the next time you remove the hub it will come right out

Axle nut torque spec is 185 lb-ft. That torque spec is what holds the unit bearings together and prevents premature failure.
Yeah, changing a buddies right front hub was so sized that we used a 10ft cheater pipe on breaker bar.

Great video. What added advantage will the jeep have with the CV installed?
My CV axles and new wheel hubs arrived yesterday for my Xj.
So, the ZJ axles will work for my XJ. Thanks for your help.
Love the video, you make it look so easy. Ty
Thanks for watching!
@dexjs do you have the cv axle part numbers for xj?
Thank you Dex, I'm doing my yj this winter. I was the one that asked you. Thank you again.
Can you let me know how it goes and the part number you used plz
@dustinchandler5163 I'll probably make a video and I'll share it. But I'm not as good at it as Dex
@Baumann4.0 good to see a distant relative on here💪 mines spelled with 1 N though. (No idea where my TH-cam handle came from)
@rachal9306 A lot of the Baumann's dropped a N after World War 2 they were ashamed of being German

love your videos man
THANKS DEX!

Hi Dex

Do a ball joint replacement video one day
Axle part numbers. Oreilys Precision CH8220 and CH8221.
I'll be doing this to my 1996 XJ at the first sign of front axle problems.
i sure wish i lived in your back yard
Dexter. Have you ever had one where the CV boot rubs on its self and smells like burning rubber?
Since we’re swapping from ujoints to cv’s thanks to this video, can we get a video on refreshing/upgrading the steering now?
I have CV shafts on my daily XJ, I have RCV's on my trail rig
Hello do you think will these fit in a stock 88 jeep yj front axle?? I know it will no longer have the the axle disconnect ( two piece axle) for 4x4 .
Looks like I’m gonna be doing this at least three times.😂
What year and model of jeep do you look up the part number?
What is the advantage of a CV axle over a stock one??? And do these have ends one both you have to remove first, like the picture on the box?..?

You didnt mention what the donor vehicle for the CV shafts are when you go to order them (or did i just miss that part).
Very good sir!
If all of them came apart that easy my life would be simpler and less stressful at work. I mean hubs in general. Gm products seem to fight the hardest
5lb sledge hammering on hubs for like 20 minutes till they popped out so i feel that, hardest one ive had to do thankfully
Hey do you have the part numbers for those
I enjoy your videos, but I want to know how moving the wheel bearings .120" closer will affect the toe, are they thicker on one side?
My frame is basically gone… You should make a video on how you stiffen/rebuild your xj frames
Buy stiffer kits weld them up.
Just saw your videos on the axle swap question can I do that axle swap on. 95 YJ?

About to do the swap and you have me interested in CVs now.
Like.knuckle swapping ?
Sorry, @@dexjs. Swapped to WJ knuckles in my 01 and used welded spacer to maintain factory xj axles. Do I order WJ CVs?

I ordered a set of them off amazon but both shafts are too long
Whats the part number for a jeep Cherokee? thanks
So that's a dana 30 I take it. That shaft still works with that abs ring even if my cherokee doesn't have abs?
Correct!
Think Ill go with rcv's lol@dexjs

the zj has the best dana 30 version with the high pinion

What seals do you need to doing this on the CAD version of this axle.
Cv axles are honestly one of the easiest jobs if your bolts aren’t stuck
