What I was offered: A magnificent little game about archaeology in the British countryside. What I witnessed: An extremely grounded and realistic discussion of adult issues that hit a *bit* too close to home.
I’m now emotionally invested in the story and want you to finish it. If that means waiting a few weeks to let others play through it first, I’m fine with that.
Same! Even if I bought this game like I did Before Your Eyes. It's not really the kind of game I could find the drive or time to play through just to see the end of the story. And I like Jon's commentary.
Haven't seen it all yet, but I've got the feeling that Adam might be an imaginary friend from Beth's childhood. "You forgot about me", "I didn't need you anymore", "You were a child", "Everyone freaks out when you mention my name…" and we get no details on his backstory…
I was actually thinking Adam might be an alternate personality instead of an imaginary friend. Similar ideas but I get the feeling that Beth's friends were more upset about Adam than they would be if he was just an imaginary friend. Plus if he were an imaginary friend I feel like Beth's friends would have mentioned that he couldn't actually do what she wanted.
@@bobbys332 Having an imaginary friend as an adult isn't something people would be happy about. The DID argument works, but the imaginary friend argument isn't wrong either
Oooh this whole thing sounds so fishy. Local police checking in on her, being worried. People being uncomfortable about Adam & not seeing him. How her friends don't know him evem though it seems he's been around for a while while they were younger. His whole deal as some kind of reality check. How she's had some kind of mental issues, and it seems like her family has kind of tried to soften things for her, how she's "lost it" before. How she can't, or doesn't want to remember things. How controlling & self centered she is. Yeah, something isn't quite right about this.
The earring narrative is even a bit off. Mum picks up costume jewelry in rummage sales. Dad obviously scatters them around for daughters to find. Beth finds an earring, brings it to school. Teacher recognizes it as gold, Beth ends up in the newspaper. At some time around this --> Farmer who owns land the earring was found on - his wife and kids go missing. Mum dies young. Another farmer winds up dead in a very public and scary way. Sounds like someone else might have been after that other earring as well. Real dissociative Identity (or "multiple personality") disorder is usually triggered by some massive trauma. I wonder if Beth's "issue" is maybe the cause or effect of any of those other strange occurrences. And if the other "friends" are just other personalities that couldn't handle the Jake thing and so she's left with Andy. Hell I'm starting to wonder if Lucy is even real, or if she's the root of the "controlling, selfish planner" personality. I love unreliable narrator stories! But I think this ending is going to be upsetting.
My guess from the last conversation is that he is her imaginary friend/coping mechanism. Based on people being worried, and maybe the police knowing about it, at the minimum, she was a bit too obsessive about him and made people uncomfortable. Or she might even be affected with some kind of schizophrenia.
If you look the only transport is her car and the Farm is clearly high up in the hills far from any town. It also doesn't look like the car has moved, so I don't think she's actually going anywhere in the evenings, the helicopter could be the out police looking for her. At first 'Adam' wakes ups in a shed and in the conversation each morning he asks how she is or how something went last night, indicating he supposedly met her there. She makes a huge deal about not being seen with him or spending her evening time with him, so I doubt she is picking him up after the first day and taking him there. So how is he getting there each morning if he is real? Also at 1:10:06 he says "Really? If you can't even admit to me, to yourself, then we might as well get back out there and detect." and the way the line is delivered by the VA it not hard to argue he implying that he and she are the same person. That admitting the truth to him is her admitting the truth to her self.
Jon: "We're going to play a chilled out, relaxing game today that's all about the narrative" Also Jon: "Oh, God, I'm so far behind searching this field! Why did I waste so much time with the narrative!"
On the themes of this game, my stepdad wasn't the best person, but he once told me something that really stuck with me. "There's always something else. 'If I can just find a job. If I can just pay off the car. If I can just pay off the house.' There will always be something next. Once whatever thing is done, once whatever happens, you'll just be stressed about something else. You will never be care-free again, and that's just something you have to accept as an adult."
Currently at 32 mins in, just heard about the farmers wife~ calling it the reason the farmer said no more metal detecting is because they are buried out there somewhere and this game is gonna take a sudden turn but not too dark. A famous 5 situation, if you will. Edit: I'd love to see the ending! I must know! And while I will be playing this myself it's always a Joy to see you play these games Jon, so if you like please please please finish it.
Watching this is honestly making me really uncomfortable. Seems like it's definitely what minesweeping an emotional minefield would involve; and (especially in the context of a game) that has me on edge far more than the normal just-blows-your-limb-off-if-you-do-the-wrong-thing kind of minesweeping.
Ooooo.....the relationship between the two of them hits a little too close to home. Sounds like an old girlfriend I had, always chasing things, feeling like shit when she felt like she didn't live up to the world's expectations (which she created in her own mind) and then coming to me miserable to "fix things" because I was the only one who made her feel safe, comfortable and loved. Nice find Jon....might need to have a drink myself tonight thanks to you. But yeah....really want to see how this ends.
Speaking as an archaeologist, I was like "Yes! Super chill metal detecting with a nice narrative story going on, gonna love this!!" Then I started to die inside a little as I watched Jon attempt to speed run metal detecting. Still loved the video and will almost definitely pick up the game :)
Oh Christ on a Bike, 1:16:45 in and I've only just twigged... Adam is her imaginary friend from childhood isn't he. Jon is absolutely right about the impossibility of recapturing lost youth. In fact, there is some evidence (vaguely waves hands at Google) that suggests we falsely remember the eras of our youth as more positive than they were, simply because we *were younger* when they happened. This also leads in the fallacy that your young adulthood contains "the best years of your life" as though everyone experiences the good and bad of life in a specific order. We can only make the best of what we have, when we have it, and not assume that it will be with us forever. The old adage "this too shall pass" is a good one to live by. So whatever your life is like right now, I send you love and best wishes
I would love to see you do part 2 of this! This is exactly the type of narrative game I enjoy to watch you play a lot but doesnt really seem like I'd enjoy playing it as much :)
Something about Beth spoke to me. The fact she's always busy and making excuses, the fact she's got so much going on and abandoned her hobbies, the fact that she's got so much going on because she's trying to avoid the real issues. It all reminds me of my family. Everyone is always too busy to do anything, working themselves to the bone, always complaining about it, but nothing changes. Even now, as I'm growing up and going to uni, getting a summer job, I'm seeing the same thing. But I know I can manage my time better. Beth is a very clever highlight of exactly this issue, and it hits home quite hard for me
