Hey, if you make a series about the history of European Protestantism, don't forget to make an episode about the history of Protestantism in Transylvania and the Freedom of Religion from the 1540's till the Habsburg conquest in 1690. So many Christian churches lived in peace in Transylvania, thanks to the World's first law of the Freedom of Religion from 1568: - Catholics, - Lutherans, - Calvinists, - Unitarians, - Sabbatarians, - Anabaptists (Hutterites), - Orthodoxes.
I'll certainly make a documentary about Transylvania - just for the sake of my princely ancestors! But I'll probably do it within the context of a "History of Hungary"series. Don't ask me when.
Maybe that's because of Ottomans at that time became overlord to most of Hungarians and Transylvania itself? Despite their outragous practices of kidnapping Christian boys for Jannisary but they do tolerate different religions given they payed their taxes well. If all of Hungarian crown land including Transylvania fall to Habsburgs earlier wouldnt that hard to practice such religious tolerance given Habsburgs were staunchly catholic?

To get a good idea of how Gracious the French Catholics were to the Protestants, read The Edict of Nantes. the French original is a tad more hateful than the English translation. Edite de Nantes 1598 issued by Henri IV. Celebrated as a great example of French Catholic tolerance.

Did anyone notice that in Poland the nobility chose the king in nprocess called "free election"? He was de facto only a life-long president with very restricted powers and no dynasty line continuity after his death. In the same way he become Grand Duke of Lithuania. Elitarian democracy was the key for final demise of the Commonwealth while other countries were ruled by skilled dynasties.
Very good, however I have some reserve about the statement you make at 54:01. "Catherine de Medicis, the King and the Guises conspired to finish Coligny." Where did you get that? My understanding is that it is still a hjottely debated issue. And there are many conflicting analyses of the events. To make a parallel look at the investigation of the events on Jan 6... now we are talking about events that happened 6 centuries ago, with no record and within a day. The King look at Coligny as a father, and Catherine just married her daughter to the head of the Huguenots. The whole thing doesn't make much sense.

@@pikeshotBattles One more question. What was the ideology of the two sides? For example the German peasant war is often described as a protestant uprising against catholic lords, when in reality it obv had economic equality and political (anti tyranny) connotations aswell. Was there something like this here too?
@@incursus1401 both sides were commanded by nobles. So many Christian churches lived in peace in Transylvania, thanks to the World's first law of the Freedom of Religion from 1568:
- Catholics,
- Lutherans,
- Calvinists,
- Unitarians,
- Sabbatarians,
- Anabaptists (Hutterites),
- Orthodoxes.
I'll certainly make a documentary about Transylvania - just for the sake of my princely ancestors! But I'll probably do it within the context of a "History of Hungary"series. Don't ask me when.
@@pikeshotBattles Thanks
Maybe that's because of Ottomans at that time became overlord to most of Hungarians and Transylvania itself? Despite their outragous practices of kidnapping Christian boys for Jannisary but they do tolerate different religions given they payed their taxes well. If all of Hungarian crown land including Transylvania fall to Habsburgs earlier wouldnt that hard to practice such religious tolerance given Habsburgs were staunchly catholic?

I visited Zurich and Berne a few months ago and spent days in their national museums which featured great exhibits with explanations of the swiss mercenaries and their historical contributions to european medieval and reformation era warfare.
check it out when you go there
one minor thing, when listening to your video, the sound effect you used to crossout your characters in the beginning kept making me check for security alerts on windows. Seems good so far.

To get a good idea of how Gracious the French Catholics were to the Protestants, read The Edict of Nantes. the French original is a tad more hateful than the English translation. Edite de Nantes 1598 issued by Henri IV. Celebrated as a great example of French Catholic tolerance.
hello there Edwin and anyone else that sees this comment jesus loves you and repent of your sins so you can inherit God's kingdom
Henri IV was a protestant himself
@@chourtout "Paris is worth a Mass". Yes, he was a protestant at heart, but he had to word The Edict of Nantes to be hateful to be able to issue it at all.
Wonderful. I am betting there was no time or money to discuss the logistics difficulties of logistics and shrinking populations. I'm long retired, can't give much. I assume there is a Patreon page. I'm in.
It may just be my upbringing, but even though I'm an atheist I always find myself unconsciously rooting for the catholics.

Something I don't understand is that how did these religious movements like Calvanism or other Protestant groups become so popular so far, or rather why were the Catholics not able to stop people from wanting to convert?

It wasn't a war of political ideology, though the events of the war caused people to change how they thought about government and society (i.e. questions like "is it ever right to fight against one's own king?"
