As it was based on Herman Hesses book Demian, which is about loss of innocence and giving into temptation, the green symbolised poisoning of innocence as its sort of a poisonous, toxic colour
Itd be easier to understand the MVs if you new the members better, as they all have a slightly different role to build the story, but your interpretation was super facsinating!
PS when the music stops to talk for a moment, thats a quote from the book. And i think ive heard the organist is a character in the book?

They actually have something called BTS Memories and it has a lot of behind the scenes content. These shooting sketch videos are shorter versions of the videos in the BTS Memories collections. I like them because you get a longer more in-depth look at the shooting process for all of their music videos, live performances, rehearsals, photoshoots etc. So far they have them for 2014 - 2019.

These shooting sketches are just short snippets of the MV filming! They go into more depth in their "Memories of (insert year)" DVDs. Each year they release DVDs of behind the scenes content from throughout the whole year. But those are paid content, compared to these free BTS Episodes on youtube. The Memories DVDs cover everything from MV shooting, photoshoots, practices, concerts, concert prep, the life of touring, etc.

  • @jessicaelle0988
    @jessicaelle0988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

The color green has a different meaning depending on the country and the culture, but the most common emotion associated with green is 'Envy'; Shakespeare referred to it in his work like 'Othello', now we say "being green with envy".
This song is part of their album 'WINGS', the intro was a solo by J-Hope called 'Boy meets evil' (th-cam.com/video/iJJSh-eEdRk/w-d-xo.html). So this song is about young boys discovering temptations (sex, drugs, etc.) and having to choose between good and evil as you saw with the 2 statues of an angel and a demon. Some of them already fell like V who lost his 'wings' and RM who's smoking a weird substance. In this video, Jin is the one being tested, and he eventually falls too when he kisses the statue.
Even the paintings in the MV have their importance, for example, we can see the famous painting of Icarus who burnt his wings and fell as he wanted to fly higher despite his fathers' warnings. Everything in BTS's MV has a meaning, nothing is there by accident. You can find many videos and articles explaining every detail if you're interesting.
BTS sometimes give guidelines to help us understand what they wanted to say in the song, what they were thinking about when they wrote it, but overall they like to keep the interpretation open, they love watching reaction videos and see us coming up with different interpretations.

I think one reason why the behind the scenes on youtube are so short is because every year they release a "Memories 20XX" DVD that shows everything behind the camera in detail. There's an extended blood sweat and tears behind the scenes look in the Memories 2016 DVD but you'd have to find a way to watch it off camera. These DVDs normally average 10 hours of footage! It's a good marketing tactic imo~ haha

Since you're watching the MVs out of order, some of the intended meanings will be lost on ya.
This era is about temptation & coming of age. Based on the novel Demian, by Herman Hesse.
And this was definitely not on a tight budget. When we say the budget used to be tight, we mean it. 🤭 I'll keep requesting I NEED U (19+) which begins their fictional storyline.

  • @КалинаСпасова-ф3ф

Hey, the green is the colour of the absinthe. The MV and album are inspired from Herman Hesse's Damien, the absinthe was a very popular alcohol during that time in Europe, because high concentrates of it gives you hallucinations and a lot of artists were drinking it.
I also love your interpretation of them being/becoming art! It's very interesting take, one that I haven't seen in army spaces!

  • @rkivelover

In my opinion, green symbolises temptation! I think the whole video and concept is really about temptation, to want something evil that you shouldn’t have, and to eventually give in and be controlled by that desire.

  • @DB20204
    @DB20204 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Green probably for the absinthe. RM had absinthe, which is notoriously associated with the color green. Hence its nickname the 'green fairy'. *edit since I'm not on a treadmill now: Nowadays, I think you're more likely to find absinthe as a literary reference than in a bar. And what you find in a bar won't be "true" absinthe, since it won't have hallucinogenic properties. RM is shown early in the MV with a common way of drinking absinthe, with a sugar cube that's lit on fire to melt into the bitter drink. In literature, the symbolism of absinthe usually correlates with indulgence, decadence, temptation, etc. The characters typically drinking absinthe are societal outsiders, often drinking while posing existential questions about morality. These characters are oftentimes questioning their sexuality. Given the context of the MV, I think it’s safe to say absinthe represents temptation. In the Japanese MV version, RM somewhat forcefully has JK drink absinthe. JK starts hallucinating and then throws up, but the damage is already done. His eyes have been “opened” by temptation. And then there’s the overt references to the novel Demian, which is also very much about temptation and figuring out one’s own moral code when your parents have given you a binary between black and white, but you find reality tends to be grey.

  • @nabi767
    @nabi767 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

About the green symbolism, the green drink RM was having was supposed to be Absinthe I heard. It is known to have a toxic and hallucinating ingredient. And from the book Demian, used as the main motif of this m/v, its protagonist Sinclair did some painting and he mentioned he is fond of Oxide Chromium's green color. Chromium is also known to be toxic even though it is still used in art supplies nowadays. These toxic green materials might symbolize temptations general youth could face in their life.

They don’t actually have a target audience. Their audience actually pretty evenly across the age groups. Most are people in their 20s and 30s (about 20 percent each) and then around 10-15 percent in the younger then 20, 40s, and 50s+ group

I think BTS' target audience is basically themselves. They make it as they would like it, and it helps that many of them are old and young souls. And then we as fans also like it, not just because it is what BTS like, but we can feel their passion for everything they put out and that it makes sense to all ages, religions and nationalities, and doesn't feel too conceptually narrow minded as I feel other music/products are. :D

I'm sure you have found out by now that the song and music video is heavily inspired by Demian by Herman Hesse (which the leader RM read while he was on tour). In basic words it's about temptation. The difference between wanting to sin and resisting against sinning is shown in the form of angels. Lots of imagery of life and death, also good and evil.

Half the fun of a BTS video is digging through and finding all the references they make, both to their own work and to other art. The deeper you go the more interesting it gets which is one of the things I love about them. We love discussing this stuff which is why people will share so much in the comments, so please do take it as friendly discussion! We don’t expect you to know stuff like that on a first watch!
My personal interpretation of the green is that it represents corruption bc loss of innocence/temptation are big themes in the song and the book it’s based on. But I love the idea that it’s them sort of melting into art!!
PS we would also like 15 min making of videos

Green is the colour of Absinthe which was popular drink in the late 19th, early 20th century especially by bohemian artists in Europe (about the time the novel ‘Demien’ is set). It has hallucinatory effect and had been used to help “creative” process. Here it symbolises boys losing their innocence, leaving childish things behind (as seen in the beginning of the MV). Suga’s rap contains the lyric “knowingly swallowing from the poisonous grail” meaning their willingness to give into temptation.

I really liked your interpretation of this video, that was so independent and not tied to the BU (something, that ARMY instantly puts as a filter watching their videos and go looking for clues to the on going story line). I think your interpretation was very cool and lets this music video to kind of have an artistic meaning on its own. I wish behind the scenes was longer too! Sometimes now for their recent MVs we get more than one behind the scenes video, but they are shorter (for example for ON, Dynamite, there are a few separate behind the scenes).

My (extremely long-winded) thoughts, on the use of green: RM was seen drinking Absinth. In the late 19th- early 20th century, it was a drink popular amongst artists and bohemians (especially in France). Thus, the drink itself became associated with decadence.
I felt it most when they were lounging about with green smoke/incense around them. They look positively debauched. And you really get the sense of them falling prey to vices.
Many artists sought inspiration from "The green fairy", so there are a multitude of references in paintings and writings.
I don't have any sort of arts degree. But from what I can tell, there is a prevalent use of greens, yellows and blues, in paintings from that era. (Vincent Van Gogh, comes to mind, for instance.)
The blue walls/floors/ceilings, yellow fixtures and green tint give me that same vibe.
For many years, the popular opinion was that Absinth must've had some hallucinogenic properties. But no studies have showed that to be the case. The effects are now thought to be widely overstated, probably no different to alcohol in general, but that Absinth got a particularly bad reputation due to the fact that those who imbibed it were considered less than respectable.
I think there may be more factors as to why the drink was looked on as a corrupting influence, on both mind and body.
Mainly, the prevalence of mental health-issues, in those with an artistic inclination. In a time where there was no real care, and a limited understanding about such matters. Add to that, the fact that some psychiatric disorders can worsen with age (bipolar, for instance), if left untreated. That could easily look like a result of such lifestyle choices. Not discounting the fact that quite a few of them probably had a bit of a drinking problem.
Another possible cause, of a percieved decline in mental faculties, could be due to the paint they used. Or fumes from the paint stripper, in enclosed spaces.
I recall reading something about some colors of the oil paint having lead in them, and that some artists used their lips to wet the tip of the brush, in order to make it pointier. Ingesting lead can cause behavioural changes, amongst other things. So depending on if and how often a person did it, it could've played some role in it.
Well, that took a bit of a detour...
If anyone is still reading; I hope you enjoyed the ride!

You see jimin crying in green, jhope shooting an arrow that splatters colors like green, RM drinking a green drink that looked more like it was spiked with green since it was clear before and jungkook eating a green drop that drops on his finger from above just like the drop that drops in RMs clear drink, maybe resemling a tear or sweatdrop.

In this MV, green means that toxic, poison, and forbidden sin. This MV theme is about young adults meet the temptations and corruptions. At this point of MV, they were already popular. Of course, having good cameras are essential even back then in the beginning. For Hig Hit didn't compromised the quality of their are work.

A lot of their videos are connected in what’s called the Bangtan Universe. It tells a story of 7 friends who share the same names as the members (their full names, not stage names) but these characters do not share the same personalities or backstories as the actual members. The story kicks off in the MVs with I Need U and Run, though Blood Sweat & Tears functions as an abstract representation of what’s happening in the story-Jin (the one whose face cracks at the end) trying to save his friends from self-destruction. People often interpret the ending of BS&T as Jin either making a deal and sacrificing himself to save his friends, or falling victim to temptation himself.
Also, I think the green throughout BS&T represents poison, which is a reference to the poisoned grail in the lyrics of the song-(“the grail was poisoned but I drank it anyway.”) It represents them still seeking and indulging that which is slowly killing them. In the Bangtan Universe, a lot of the characters are extremely self destructive. Some abuse alcohol while another abuses drugs, others vandalize. The path they initially follow leads directly to their downfall.

this mv shoot was a big gamble. Its the turning point in their career where they break away from their low budget (still amazing) mvs. Before this, was the i need you/run series (hyym era). This helped them get the recognition they needed to win their first daesang 💜 this wings era also got more global recognition

First: thank you again for your reaction, I really enjoyed it!
    About the MV:
In my interpretation green is associated with poison and the forbidden fruit. This story is about the temptation of falling for the devil, sins and all those stuff. Jin, the one who kissed the statue, made a deal with the devil so the other ones could flee. He is the pivotal character in the story line throughout most of BTS albums back then. RM (the one in the pyjama) is drinking the poison, Jimin (the one with the blindfold) is crying the poison and Jungkook (the lollipop kid) is eating a droplet of poison. They all kinda tried to save each other but only Jin made it. He offered himself to save his friends.
The flowers at the end of the MV when he cracked up also have a greater meaning which one is only able to understand when one dives deeper into the story.
Some other things they didn't show:
RM broke the glass in the big hall at the beginning, that's why he is called the god of destruction. He broke so much equipment and lost so much other stuff it's crazy.
Jimin had a really hard time with BST. Earlier (2013/14) he was one of the more bulkie members of BTS but since 'Spring Day' he softened up. During BST he struggeled a lot with his body image and underate a lot (from what we know), so he had not much energy left.
Originally Suga/Yoongi (the one who played the organ) would have covered Jins eyes at the end but he/they just couldn't stop laughing so they switched him out with Tae (devil wing man) which is in my opinion the better match since he personifies the devil.
This is all I can think of at the moment.
Ah, one more: Herrman Hesse is a German author, so they included a but of German in the MV. It was written above the mirror in one scene.

BTS is complex. Everything about them. Everything. This creates an enormous amount of artistic license for the artists involved with production and as much detail and depth as fans could possibly imagine or desire. Also please remember dance is a primary form of communication for BTS. I think the theme of temptation is pretty clear from their dance if you take another look at it.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but a really cool thing (to me anyway) is the fact that BTS and their company BigHit Music have chosen to use the same director and production company for almost all of their videos. The director is Yong Seok Choi and the LUMPENS is the video creation company. They have been in charge of pretty much all the MV's since “No More Dream” in 2013.

Green is a base color for old paintings. All historic painters first painted their canvas green and then painted the actual picture over it. The green base made other colours stood out more and made them realistic or something, I dont rememder its long time since I was in art school.
Maybe there is these green details like green tears here because their blood sweat and tears are the base for BTS music... Their art

Also it could be visual representation of temptation, infatuation and corruption. Brilliance of both meanings are that it doesn't have to be one or another, they perfectly coexist
Also, This is an excerpt from nicki swift article about meaning of the song: "While some fans may think that BTS's lead single "Blood Sweat & Tears" from their album "Wings" is about how hard they've worked as a band, it is actually about their willingness to sacrifice themselves in the name of love. "Kiss me, it's okay if it hurts / Just make it as tight / As that I can't feel the pain anymore / Baby, it's okay if I get drunk / I'll drink you in deep now / Deep into my throat / The whiskey that is you," they sing. Clearly, the song sees temptation become so great, it's literally intoxicating.

The BTS Episodes are the free content that they post on TH-cam, but there are also extended videos for the filming of each music video that include 10-15min of footage. These are included on the BTS Memory DVDs - highly recommend if you can find the footage online (because its very hard to get them for versions earlier than whichever the last one released is, which is currently 2019)

Adding to my comments from the other reaction to actual video: all the members are tempted. The green shows you they each fall. It starts with RM falling into Absinthe, then Jungkook joins him. J-Hope falls into despair, Yoongi and Jimin try to hide with the masks. Jin is exploring and open, but he too falls and cracks. V smirks at the end. Lucifer won! He has your blood, sweat and tears.

the color green usually stands for envy just in general. like “her fur coat makes me green with envy” (off of google) so i kind of get that from the mv because it’s about temptation

  • @ghiemin6586

Green represents balance, growth, harmony or self control. Blood sweat and tears is about youth temptations and growing up. Understanding the colors meaning in a video is a major key point on a artistic view. Every color has its meaning to show the viewers the situations or the feelings of the scene being created. Without understanding the meanings of the colors will make your art (videos) disconnected. Learning these meanings will require a lot of research and reading. And lumpens (the director) and the creative team knows exactly what they are doing.

I've been a BTS Universe theorist for a while now, but I've also done extensive learning of how to observe classical art and its various symbolisms, and BTS uses a lot of that type of classical symbolism in this video, specifically uses of color and objects to tell the story.
The green throughout the BU videos symbolizes a combining of blue and yellow -- these two colors are a combination that is found very frequently in especially the BU videos. I've come to find that whenever green is present, it means two timelines (past and present in particular) are coming together, the yellow and the blue. Notice how Namjoon's room has the GREEN smoke floating up into the BLUE and YELLOW room? That means that he knows what's going on in that room without seeing it specifically.

In the past, the color green was a color used to portray the devil because of the face, body and claws of the devil are illustrated in green that's why JK said that the MV focuses on the color green.

I'm very late here to watch these reactions, but the more lengthy behind the scenes of all their activities are included in the memories DVD of each year. So the whole making of Blood, Sweat and Tears MV is there in the memories of 2016 DVD in a whole disk which actually you have to buy and pay to get. so yeah that's that...
Also, I love your reactions and it's so amazing watching reaction videos from an expert POV of a certain sector(i.e. Filmmaker, Producer, Music Coach, Dancer, Fashion Designer etc.) rather than a random reactor because then you get to know more about the little things BTS and the crew put effort into while creating a music video.

The green color generally refer to "Envy" , witch feat with the meaning of the song (Temptation) . The one who cry "green tear" after being unfolded is Jimin, not the same guy than the one who kiss the statue, and have is face "cracked" at the end: it's Jin. For a little help: V is the one who lost his wings; Suga the one who play organ and who is dress in blue in the deep blue room; RM the guy who drink green liquid and smoke; Jungkook the one who "fly" like Icarus; and J Hope the one who play with water and shoot an arrow with his bow.
