@@Nerukenshi1233 If you want to be an archaeologist and do original research then yeah, you gotta have a degree. PhD typically. True of business, but not of any of the sciences. This isn't 1854.
Okay, just started but directly after the "I wanna make the castles authentic" part I need to ask if you've contacted archeologists? There are many that are specialized on medieval buildings. I was part of an University team that reconstructed castles, ruins and houses in 3D and made them available on the spot where they stood via AR. There are still many misconceptions about how castles and keeps really looked like, for example the "stone-look". We think keeps looked like that that because fantasy movies are shot in ruins and what's left of those are just stony walls. Like with Egyptian ruins, in their time those buildings were very colorful. Anyway, from your other videos I trust you did your research and am very much looking forward to the project! :)
As an Artistic Blacksmith who is a big fan of the medieval period, this would be my dream. To work with a castle backdrop, forging away. Shame im in the UK. Chase your dreams Shad, become the Lord of the Shadlands :)
Shad is just building medieval Disney world. He’s really out here living all of our childhood dreams. Crazy to imagine the first video I saw of him years ago he was just doing this TH-cam thing as a hobby.
Your enthusiasm is adorable! Here's some name suggestions: 1. The forified manor: Witten Hus (modern lower saxon tongue for "White House") 2. The tower: Blankenstein (essentially the same: litterally "bright rock", but more in the sense of "White Keep", if IDR there is a castle in now Hungary of this name) 3. The roofed tower: Altavista "High Viev", there are many watchtower and watchout places with names like that, this one has an alpine vibe to me, there are similar styled places all over the southern alps, so an italian inspired name) 4. The big castle: Chateau Romanaise (For similar reasons, interestingly, this one looks more like the romantic chateau renovations of the 19th century, which tried to emulate the original "romanic" looks by incorporating as much elements as possible and in the end mostly going wildly overboard, distorting our image of knights' castles forever. This adaptation, which is quite decent in comparison, though, strongly resembles the chateaus of the french Loire region, hence the french name.) 5. The smaller reminiscence to Honorgard: Ehrenberg (german translation of "Honorgard" - now THiS strongly looks like something that might actually be found somewhere nowadays in the Rhine valley, in Bohemia or elsewhere in the lands of the medieval Holy Roman Empire. "Ehrenberg" - or "Ehrenfels", "Ehrenburg", "Ehrenstein", if your aussie tongues finds those variants more pleasing" - is a name that is not so uncommon indeed.) 6. The feasting hall: Shadfrid Hall (The normannic aesthetics of this one is crying out for a norman name, and I guess you should have yourself honoured for your dream, somewhere ..
The fortified manor should be called "Oakeshott manor", firstly because it would be a nice nod to the Oakeshott typology of swords, and secondly because the walls are 'shot through' with wood!
Shad I know of a company in the US that builds pretty accurate Castles called Castlemagic Castle Builders they have been doing it since the 1980s they can build Drawbridges, Masonry Heaters Arched barns, Battlements, Keeps, Portcullis, Stone Towers, Arrow loopholes and more. Maybe you can get some tips and tricks from them.
8:36 Makes sense. If you don't have enough stone to drop a castle, you can substitute a tower in a pinch. You can still fit 5 villagers inside to fend off small raids.
Shad, if you want to build Honorguard, make building Honorguard your final goal for Shadlands. Don't worry yourself at this early point on how, the means will likely come up as you get closer to it. What you're building will definitely turn into a good tourist attraction and attract people from all over, and probably attract film producers to use them as sets, so I think the money will come.
I agree. I would rather see that than the smaller castles, although I understand that he needs to start small. I think he should make it a bigger priority, doing it after the watchtowers, with maybe a smaller castle in between. He could drop some of the castles in between. He could even drop the giant tower and the big roof and window if he needed to. I don't think it would be such stretch to do Honorguard without those parts instead of the big king's castle with the large main hall. What I would really love is for it to have the curtain walls and gatehouse. Now that would be amazing! I hope he gets to that someday.
@@dallenhumpherys7911 Many of those smaller castles would be the potential revenue and financing sources that would make it possible to build the big one. Especially the castle with the large banquet hall in it, having a restaurant and special events venue, combined with the right marketing to get people to come, could finance his big dream. I expect if Shad tried to go right to Honorguard, straight away, he'd just bankrupt himself before he was 1/4 done and we'd just end up with a pit in the ground and a very sad Shad. Nobody wants a sad Shad!
@@Seriously_Unserious That can make things more complicated and expensive. So if they're mainly shells, it's just getting the visuals right, and the structure being mostly safe. If they're going to be used as events venues, then there'll be a lot more paperwork. So everything needs to be safe, disabled access, lavatories, fire safety, elf & safety compliant commercial kitchens etc etc. Then all the other boring stuff like staff costs, dilapidations, insurance, public liability and more. Basically a whole lot more cost & paperwork involved in venue vs home. But it'll be fun to watch the process. I've also wanted to build a proper castle. Here in the UK, we had a fine tradition of folly building that needs to be restored. But we also have councils and planning departments that tend to get in the way of non-standard structures.

More importantly, an ACCURATE living history museum. Living in the UK where there's lots of living history things (Romans, Celts, Vikings, Mediaeval), I don't think I've ever been to an accurate one. Some are pretty good, but there's always annoying things
@@jmcc4566 Even most actual castles aren't really historical (I mean medieval by that) most of the time, as they changed throughout history. So it's either you have something that was "modernized" in the 16th/17th/18th/19th centuries, or something so damaged you could call it a ruin as well. In France, there was around 40,000 castles by the end of the middle ages. Nowadays, outside of those damaged I think I managed to see only one totally medieval-looking (from the inside and the outside) castle (the Haut-Koenigsburg castle), and even then, it's a castle rebuilt in the 19th century and there were things that were changed to make it prettier (even if thankfully, it's not much, as opposed to Pierrefonds castle which was changed a lot in the same process). The alternative would be Guédelon castle I guess, even if it's very recent for once it's 100% medieval, I guess you really can't find anthentically medieval castles in great shape nowadays.
So happy for you, Shad. Been watching you for probably over 4 years now, and it's amazing to see your progress. The book, the surgery, the show, your inventions, and now this! If I ever visit Australia, that's the first place I want to visit. Godspeed, sir
I think you could make a historicaly "accurate" coat of arms for one of the historically accurate castles in the future. I understand that your Shadiversity one is meant as a logo, but it would be cool to have a realistic one and put it above the gate or something like that. I live in a country full of castles and I love walking inside and seeing all the coat of arms of the different historical houses that ruled there.
8:38 The first thing I though of when looking at this tower was a sword buried with only its grip and pommel sticking out. I feel that a name such as the Pommel Tower or the Lone Hilt Tower will be a good name for it. If you ever call it the Pommel Tower, there will definitely be some people coming to tour and shout "POMMEL OF MASS DESTRUCTION!" in front of it.
Watching these lands come together is going to be an incredible multi year journey to follow. If I could suggest one thing it would be to monetize your building quickly to fund the construction of more. Even one of the small accessible towers with a small market or military encampment could pull loads of groups of LARPers. And given your vision I think people would be proud to put their money towards the bigger and better castles while getting experiences you can’t get in your local park
I'm excited, like really excited, for you Shad! Imagine being able to host HEMA tournaments, Jousting, general renaissance fair things, AND have a general historical museum site! Absolutely. And don’t forget renting it out to film crews as sets, especially as you get to add more castles. I can see this project being able to pay for itself over time. Best of luck my friend!
What an incredible plan. It’d be incredible to go to a medieval festival with friends and hang out near full scale castles. I’ve seen cool things before but the only word I have for this is incredible
Some people just don't have that mental block that prevent them from taking action towards achieving their dreams. Shad just decided he wanted to build a castle and he's actually gonna do it.
Such a wonderful idea and a great video. As for the wheelchair access: i don't know what the laws in Australia specify, but maybe you could have a wooden "draw ramp" or a drawbridge connected to a stone "bridge" ramp. You could maybe even get away with adding a side-access elevator or something that can be covered up to look like an extension on a castle. For castle names, considering the Karlings were among the most common family of nobles, and fortified manerhouses were one of the most common type of castle, I submit that the manor should be called "Karling Manor" or something to that effect.
Had a sudden thought. If Shad opened a GoFundMe or something and added reward tiers, like a stone with your name on it at 500euro/dollar, how fast would the full project be funded?
Commit to building those guard towers or one of the smaller castle 'properly' with real interiors maybe you would get the funding, but I think the larger ones are too out of reach - as really what does any of Shads European friends want to with a castle that is one hellishly long plane trip away when there are real castle on the door step, you'd get a few backers of course but still... Note I am not suggesting going with pure traditional Guédelon style experimental archeology construction, as then it will take decades and cost much more - use modern mechanical assistance, cheating concrete blocks for internal structural stuff etc, but really sell the look inside and out I think you could get enough support for the smaller stuff.
@@foldionepapyrus3441 but in the US going to Europe isn't that much more accessible than going to Australia so there is a decent population he could pool from. And funding the smallest tower would probably already be a huge leg up.
@@garethbaus5471 You keep it expensive so that you have a core of a few people that can become regulars and continue to shell out/invest money as needed. If you're going for 10,000 people then you will have to accommodate 10,000 people, which sounds exhausting. Get some Bitcoin billionaires on board and you'll have all the funding you need. Create a community of castles, you all can play Lords and Ladies and eat your Bitcoin like croutons on salad.
Now what would be super cool is to have disabled access camoflauged as seige towers that you can roll up to different castles. Sure it would be an expensive piece of kit but it would really fit the theme and could probably be disguised quite proficiently.
Alternately/additionally, he could lean in to the fantasy aspect and have it be part of the story for some of the locations. Like say, the fey decided to hold an annual festival in this human-made castle but they needed a way to get the giant tortoises upon which they built their houses to higher floors.
Bell towers, siege ramps, *turtles*, the list goes on for fun stuff you could make to help people in! Though personally I think it’d be better to incorporate disability access into it’s design, so people can explore the fort inside and out without siege kit lining the walls.
YO YO YO YO YO YO!!!!!! This is so fricking cool! I remember about a year or two ago when you made that video right after you purchased the land, so cool to hear about this.

Building my own home on a large plot of land has always been a dream of mine. You’re very lucky/blessed that you have the opportunity, and the availability of land in Australia must certainly have helped!
For the castles that need wheelchair access, a lift to the side might be better than turning the staircase into a ramp. You could even make it aesthetically match the drawbridge
I think it would be cool if you built a gate house near the front of your property if it is feasible. Ether way, I can't wait to see how this turns out!

It was the housing of many Danish Monarchs and is a renaissance-style castle Still owned by the Glucksburg family, although owned foundationally to keep it protected. It has a fascinating history, seeing as it had survived both world wars and many lootings during that time period. Although outside of your favorite time period sure but still a magnificent sight! I can imagine having a "The Great Shadlands road" which will start in the entrance of the Shadlands and it will go through, every time you arrive in a new castle/village around it there would be a sign "Welcome to -name of the castle-, typical early medieval castle, etc..."
The fact that your entire family supports you in this endevour is just so beautiful and so wholesome. Love it!
i mean, to be fair. of course the kids are excited about it lol.
They were fine with it once Shad promised to do all the vacuum-cleaning.
ME TOO
As a future medieval archeologist who wants to renove an old french castle and to live in it and to make full historial event in it (artisans, medieval fights and more), I will watch carefully this video! I hope that my dream will come alive, and I'm happy to see that others people do that kind of kid's dream for real!
Good luck in your adventure!
That’s what I want to do too
I hope you invite me! I would like to be architect for classical and traditional orders. And also interested in gothic and castle architecture. Gonna see you there hopefully!
@@rao2398 Yea I hesirtated between architecure as well! We can stay in touch if you want to!
There was a show on PBS about a family that did something like that and it talked about the costs as well as problems that need to be resolved in doing so. Maybe check it; was called Escape to the Chateau (something like that).
I would also love to live in a castle. If not an actual surviving one, maybe a symmetrical fortified manor house, something like the one Shad showed in this video. Thats a design i find very appealing.
Can I just say shad: you've inspired me to learn more about history and I just got accepted into college of my choice majoring in business and minoring in archaeology.

Shad, if you ever need a clever handicapped access rout for a more complicated castle, you should consider a siege tower. :P
that's actually a brilliant solution
Lmao
That’s actually, unironacially a brilliant idea. They could hide an elevator shaft within to keep authenticity.
I recommend that too, it's the perfect solution!
Guedelon castle in France for example will be whitewashed.
That makes sense.. I grew up with images of this cold, white marble-faced Greece.. that we now know was painted :P
As an Artistic Blacksmith who is a big fan of the medieval period, this would be my dream. To work with a castle backdrop, forging away. Shame im in the UK. Chase your dreams Shad, become the Lord of the Shadlands :)
Is the joke that you have lots of actual castles?

Shad is just building medieval Disney world. He’s really out here living all of our childhood dreams. Crazy to imagine the first video I saw of him years ago he was just doing this TH-cam thing as a hobby.
Your enthusiasm is adorable! Here's some name suggestions:
1. The forified manor: Witten Hus (modern lower saxon tongue for "White House")
2. The tower: Blankenstein (essentially the same: litterally "bright rock", but more in the sense of "White Keep", if IDR there is a castle in now Hungary of this name)
3. The roofed tower: Altavista "High Viev", there are many watchtower and watchout places with names like that, this one has an alpine vibe to me, there are similar styled places all over the southern alps, so an italian inspired name)
4. This adaptation, which is quite decent in comparison, though, strongly resembles the chateaus of the french Loire region, hence the french name.)
5. The smaller reminiscence to Honorgard:
Ehrenberg (german translation of "Honorgard" - now THiS strongly looks like something that might actually be found somewhere nowadays in the Rhine valley, in Bohemia or elsewhere in the lands of the medieval Holy Roman Empire. "Ehrenberg" - or "Ehrenfels", "Ehrenburg", "Ehrenstein", if your aussie tongues finds those variants more pleasing" - is a name that is not so uncommon indeed.)
6. The feasting hall: Shadfrid Hall (The normannic aesthetics of this one is crying out for a norman name, and I guess you should have yourself honoured for your dream, somewhere ..
Name one of them Corrigan Hold. i had a teacher named corrigan who was OBSESSED with medieval literature and it's such a medieval name.
An even cooler idea to me would be name 1 of them after King Brien Boru or Queen Boudica or some other famous good King/Queen.

The fortified manor should be called "Oakeshott manor", firstly because it would be a nice nod to the Oakeshott typology of swords, and secondly because the walls are 'shot through' with wood!
For the manor house you could name it after a noble family from your book.
Is, "the house of Shad" not noble enough for you? 😉
No it is called Honorguard. That was his first castle design he made in his earlier videos years ago.
Learned almost everything of stationary defense from Lord Shad, and seeing that he’s finally started building his castles makes me very happy for him.
When the Shadlands are partially built/officially opened, I bet it will become a place of pilgrimage to enthusiasts
I've never been to Australia, but the Shadlands will definitely be on my tour list for when I do go!
Once there's a waiting list, I'll be on it.
I can imagine it could become a tourist destination as the only medieval style buildings in Australia.
Honestly, I’d go to Australia just to visit the Shadlands
Man's making history right here.
I want to see the negative comments now.
That is right Honorguard, which was the first castle design he was thinking of should be the final castle to build.

I love Shad's enthusiasm! You are an inspiration, sir.
I do appreciate that not only are you doing this for yourself but also making it into a living history museum. There arent nearly enough of them for this kind of thing.

@@taylorfusher2997 are you asking on TH-cam for an history test mate?
Pommel Tower? Australia? Maybe something else. The Giant's Hilt? I do really like "the Rangers' Tower" though
"End 'em rightly!!"
I really like the name Lone Hilt Tower, I was thinking of making a medieval style inn called "The Bloody Black"
You'll have your own thriving business that people from all over the country/world will come to see! I feel like insanely great things are coming your way, and I am totally HERE for it!
As a fantasy guy, I'm drawn to calling the smaller stone tower(s) Whitestone Tower/keep if they technically qualify as keeps.
On the original video about the castles, I nicknamed the last two as "the white throne" and "the mermaid hall"
LET’S GOOOOOOOO I can’t wait for the Shadlands to be a proper settlement! LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOO
Some Name Ideas:
1st - Yeoman’s Tower
2nd - Knight’s Redoubt
3rd - Alderman’s Manor
4th - Castellan’s Keep
5th - Baron’s Bastion
6th - Viscount’s Citadel
7th - Duke’s Redoubt
8th - Jarlheim
So awesome Shad, just can't stop smiling see you talk about this
Such a wonderful idea and a great video.
Extremely quickly I'd bet
No, lifetime memberships..... $100,000 each.
Create a community of castles, you all can play Lords and Ladies and eat your Bitcoin like croutons on salad.
i already know grandad jack is going to be a legend on this channel
Now what would be super cool is to have disabled access camoflauged as seige towers that you can roll up to different castles. Sure it would be an expensive piece of kit but it would really fit the theme and could probably be disguised quite proficiently.
Thats a really nice idea, though I maybe would put a fixed siege tower on it.
@@katharinaschnuulze3709 A Castle mid Siege would also be an amazing Place to explore.

If things go well, then I'd imagine in the future Shadlands could potentially become THE place for historical and fantasy faires and conventions... Located in Australia of all places. Even people who really don't want to visit Australia ever (it being well-known for its terrifying critters and pests) might reconsider their choices.
I do hope that things go well though. This would be a fabulous gift to the modern world, one that it might not deserve, but one that it needs nonetheless.

Shad you have been a true inspiration to all of us. You taught me so much about the medieval period and I have fallen so much in love with it. You have our support! I remember when you first showed us the large property that you said you wanted to build castles on, and I thought to myself we have to pray for Shad that this definitely becomes a reality. Well here we are! I want to continue to pray for you and your family that all of your dreams and then some become a reality because you have educated, and touched the lives of so many people.
Yes make it like a Conan elevator, and just as slow. :D
A (more expensive) option could be to fake-connect the lift to a medieval-style crane.
Maybe have a side tower that functions as an elevator but looks properly part of the building?
I think it would be cool if you built a gate house near the front of your property if it is feasible. Ether way, I can't wait to see how this turns out!
17:50 is the best in my opinion
Ok, here’s a name for you: “Künic Shâdesheim”… In Middle High German that basically means “King Shad’s home”… I’m by no means proficient in Middle High German, but I’m pretty confident in that name.

Shad your dreams are rooted in reality, after all whats more "rooted" in reality than a freakin castle.
Storytime: When visiting family in Flensburg, Germany, my mother, sister, and I went to Glucksburg Castle which is still standing and is a major museum. Many restorations have kept the time-specific style in mind down to even the dungeons, with the old torture devices put on display. The old man-catchers are still there as an educated reminder!
