Ironically, the black contestants had complained to the media that the photographers covering the pageant ignored all of them in favor of the white contestants. And Janelle felt that she was named Miss Photogenic to appease the black girls. And when she won, I remember reading that one of the Caribbean girls said that her win"recognized black is beautiful. Something that we've known all along".
I remember watching this when I was 12 and so was my cousin who was here visiting from Harrisburg Pennsylvania. As soon as her name was announced, we jumped up and down for joy! A very magical moment in history!

I saw a picture recently of Trinidad's three international beauty queens miss Universe 1977 miss World and miss Universe 1998 . And Janelle who have to be 60 by now still look very good at that age.

A Colombia le perjudicó su traductor quien paso la respuesta al inglés más sencilla y olvidó parte de ella Austria 4 meses después concurso' en Miss World, donde no logró llegar a las 7 finalistas.

Cuando ella ganó el Miss Universe en Hong-Kong en 1976, lucía radiante y muy bella pero su rostro, al entregar su corona en 1977, se veía muy cansado y sin ánimo y lamentablemente el peinado y corte de cabello no le favorecían para nada. Tuve la oportunidad de conocerla cuando ella visitó mi país, Chile, en 1976. Yo era muy joven y sinceramente era una mujer muy bella y recuerdo muy bien lo impresionados que quedaron todos los que la conocieron ese año.

I don't know about Miss Grenada being the first black miss world as there were other women of color before her, including Jamaica's Carol Crawford who bears a striking resemblance to Vanessa Williams who I understand is of Jamaican heritage. I'm hoping she thought she had it in the bag because miss Trinadad/Tabago botched the final question. Of course they all gave terrible answers but she made up a fictitious country then again the judges were probably to stupid to notice it.
It’s possible she didn’t want to win. The same happened in 1987. The first runner up, Miss Italy, reportedly didn’t want to win and was happy she didn’t.
