  • Steve Fuller is the Winter Caretaker of Yellowstone National Park - one of just a handful of hearty souls who remain in the wilderness long after the summer tourists have gone. He's stuck out the solitary existence of the position for 42 years, ever since the winter of 1973. Lee Cowan reports.

My mother died almost 40 years ago but she went to Yellowstone in her early 20s and while, I have never been there, My memories of my mother is that she talked about Yellowstone the entire rest of her life and what an incredible place it was. Great video!

I remember saving a Nat Geo Magazine from those early years with an article about Steve and his family which I read and reread. My husband and I were close in age and I sooo wished we could do that! Steve has indeed been fortunate, but he is also fully aware of that, and grateful. And he is doing such a wonderful job of sharing the beauty! Thanks you , Steve!

    Awesome!! It’s now January 2024,
please do a “follow up” on Steven & the National Park!! Even though, I just watched the documentary on Steven in the National Park. We need a very indept interview with him & exactly what he’s going to do if he retires!! I suggested he create several large Coffee Table Photo Books!! The few photos he shared, so far, are beyond spectacular!! We need another video record of his life, work, & future hopes for himself & his beloved Yellow Stone National Park! There needs to be an amazing BRONZE statue of Steven, along with an incredible tribute to his dedication of his entire adult life to his career as a Caretaker & Historian!! What an incredible man!!

How can anyone be lonely in solitude?
It is so soothing to one's soul to be surrounded by nature.

    Lucky man..
Years ago we visited Yellowstone & my wife being a nurse inquired if there was a health facility...
    There was...
We stopped in & spoke with them & they encouraged my wife to apply .
Seems nurses were very hard to keep ..
So we took a more serious look into moving to the park..
I was told I would be given a job doing park maintenance .
    Our girls were young , 7 & 8 & so were my wife & I...
But in the end , I just could'nt come to terms with the pay..
I had recently finished my engineering studies & consequently landed a high paying job...
Looking back I wish we had tried it for a couple yrs...
My wife loved the park & particularly the winter...
As for the solitude , it would'nt suited my wife very well...
I didnt mind the solitude at all , but I worried my girls would miss out on socializing with kids their age ..
That was 30 yrs ago ..
If I could live in the park today I would jump at the chance..
Im getting up in years but my health is great & I think I would love the experience.

I wish we had a world were more of us realized this soon in our lives, away from the corporate slavery, what a better way to live than to live like we were meant to be. And that while nurturing a wonderful family. We would be better human, the planet would be more livable, and there would probably be more peace. I hope his vision and life makes it to children's books so every kid can learn about this form of life, early on.
