I love how after the GIANT boosts, the enemies seem to take a second to realize you're there after landing right next to them. Like "wait, when did you get here?".
Hey Connor, amazing video, thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you out with the video, i appreciate it :). I didn't light up the test maps and i think they were without -dirtdebug (a feature that does some slight automated lighting for map testing), i always get overfocused or focused in what needs to be done, nonetheless, the purpose was fulfilled, i love watching videos on Quake speedrunning history, you are amazing, keep flying higher with the help of the Voreballs, rocket boost or with your own will. A message to all of you who read my messages : Never give up on your dreams, the best is always yet to come, and you are always capable to do amazing things, hugs for you and all of the Quake community, i love you all! You deserve what you dream! PD: The test maps were uploaded for testing and speedrunning purposes into Slipseer as "Chuma's Experimental Archives Vol 1" with one very short map i've made a while ago for Copper 1.3... Enjoy! :)
Thanks for putting your UDOB 3 run in a video, it's always been one of my favourites. The exit actually needs 3 keys in a normal playthrough, not two - there's a set of horizontal bars in addition to the vertical ones. I myself once made a map for sm213 - Low Gravity that requires a vore boost at the start in order to get out of a pit, which of course can be abused for speedrunning. Low gravity is its own entire category of cool custom map speedruns, now that I think of it. On the question of terminology: - They are definitely called vores. "Shalrath" is used in the game code, and therefore the entity definition files used in map editors, but it's an outdated reference to an earlier version of the enemy - the final game and the manual both call them vores. - Their projectiles are called "firepods" in the manual, but since people don't read (or in many cases, even have access to) the manual anymore, no one knows what that means so I like to compromise with "vorepods" whenever they need a somewhat "proper" name - in conversation, or speedrunning videos, "voreballs" is fine.
Argh thanks, I don't know how I managed to make that goofy mistake about UDOB3 :/ Appreciate the added info, and of course thanks for your awesome maps as well!
Revenant projectiles are much easier to avoid; you can sidestep them and buy a few seconds or send them into a wall. But Quake does also have much tighter player controls than Doom.
I'm team "Shalrath" If I search for "Shalrath art", I'll probably find the character. if I search for "Vore art", well, you better have safe search on. Anyways, shalrath sounds more mystical to me, even if it was someone blindly typing on the keyboard =P
I'm glad you are producing this content. Hopefully a big name channel that covers speedruns gives you a shoutout so you can blow up. These are so perfectly presented and relaxing. Keep it up I watch every single thing you upload.
ill take this encouragment in the end to say that it is wierd how in many gaming communities there are that one youtuber whose style draws people who have 0 connection to the game, like this channel, like Wirtual in Trackmania, like klikphillip in CS and like xLetalis in Witcher.
I have suggestion for such videos with custom maps, I'd like to have map list in description, interesting how that map with giant tree is called, also winter map, I recall I played it in some jam, but forgot how this whole mappack was called.
Not gonna lie, from the thumbnail I thought somebody had made a Quake sports game called Voreball and I was friggin hyped. Be like Dead Ball Zone on PS1 but with guns
I was shaking my head at diminished prospects from new Copper - pleasantly surprised you covered that too! And that Tronyn map looks incredible, I don't think I've seen it before and yet I'm a huge fan of theirs. What's its name? (A list of links to all the showcased maps wouldn't go amiss!)
What is the name of that absolutely beautiful map at 9:38? Despite picking up Quake in 1996, I've never played any custom single player maps/paks. I'm thinking I should change that.
It's called "Koshta Belorn" by Tronyn from Func Map Jam 2. Yes Quake's custom mapping scene is absolutely incredible. Check out Arcane Dimensions, Dwell, Alkaline, etc etc
Unlike speedrunning, mapping, modding, and multiplayer, people don't really use Quake for machinima anymore. Total conversions are scarce too, but I'm not aware of any machinima at all in a decade or longer. I think the people who would be doing that nowadays are probably using Source Filmmaker or Garry's Mod.
All this talk about vores and their balls has me in shamblers

These runners really made those Vores bust their balls.
Just wanna say, I have never played quake, never searched for vids about it, etc. But got recommended your channel and am enthralled.
Same for me about 6 months ago. Subscribed and watched every one since.

10:37 That map is not mine, it is by Pinchy. Great tricks!
Ahh thanks for the correction! And sorry for the mistake :(
Speed is stored in the balls
Mostly empty, huge full-bright levels made to answer some obscure item of one's own curiosity. Very nostalgic.

I hope youtube bans comments like this. You couldn't be more cringe and unoriginal if you tried.

I never related the two, but I suppose the Vore's homing-projectile game mechanic predecessor was Doom 2's Revenant.
The end of the video gave me Nuts 100% vibes for sure.
I guess Quake has balls, Doom has nuts.
Revenant projectiles are much easier to avoid; you can sidestep them and buy a few seconds or send them into a wall. But Quake does also have much tighter player controls than Doom.
Your funnest video yet. And also a surprisingly good map showcase. balls

Awesome run Jaakko!
This all video is about the joy of jumping on balls.
given radiatoryang's body of work, having balls involved in his level is appropriate

I get unreasonably excited with every new QSE video! Hugely enjoyed this one. Balls!
I don't have any jokes for you, but I love your videos and the music you use for them. "Pixel Perfect" is in my regular playlist.

This music is so awesome, plz keep it on your vids it makes me fully committed to this video😊
Fun video! I was expecting more about the base game, but you did a good job still making the custom maps stuff interesting! :)
Great content, please keep it up. I did some quake speedrunning back in the day, and i get a warm feeling from these videos

Also, time to re-binge all your stuff. Hell, may even play some Quake sometime
So excited for a new video! Thank you!
I love this channel.
Even when it’s just a guy….playing with his balls.

What map is at 3:28 ”wireframe textures”?
I haven't played with my balls since way back when Quake was new.

It's Koshta Belorn from func_mapjam2
You're right, I really should list the map credits as well. Will keep a list of them in future videos.
I checked earlier today after some time and what a coincidence lol
is it a bird? is it a plane? no! it's a quake speedrunner!
Weird, in all my years googling "vore balls" not once did I ever get any Quake content. Just years of therapy to show for it...

Yeah. Quake 3 was a good game.
If Quake speedrunning videos look like this, how eye popping do Quake Machinimas look in Current Decade? (not rhetorical, recommend Machinimas ITT)
Unlike speedrunning, mapping, modding, and multiplayer, people don't really use Quake for machinima anymore. Revenants also fire balls but DOOM community calls them rockets. This is unfortunate and hilarious.
What's the name of the overgrown tree map by Radiatoryang? Is it from a jam?
it's from Coppertone Summer Jam 2 and is called Breakfast Under The Balloons
