This is probably one of my favorite mods on Quake. Compared to Doom, Q1 doesn't get enough love, custom content-wise. I'm also very glad that the mod devs are okay with people using their assets for their own purposes.
Mods are on the lower side there because large mods like this, Quoth, and Drake (which sadly only Tronyn seems to use) all provide enough for the Quake SP mappers these days. AD alone provides so much for new and old mappers who are learning or know how to design classic Quake maps but want something unique. I kind of feel AD obsoletes earlier mods just because of how much it incorporates from Quoth, and it's just got so much more scripting potential built-in. The people who developed AD (led by Sock) poured years of experience, know-how, and determination into this mod and it shows. My only recommendation now is that more Quake fans/newbies play the older maps and mods on Quaddicted since there's always a good reason to try out the beginnings of custom Quake (packs like Beyond Belief still rock), or the silver-age period through 2012 when the scene calmed down but hit a high level of quality. Since 2012 we've had it even better, with releases like Rubicon Rumble Pack and Func_Msgboard map jams which give you bite-sized chunks of awesome level design.
AD is very easily one of the best gaming experiences ive ever had. my GOD is this thing well made. i feel like it took everything i loved about quake and just ramped it up as far as it could go. the level design, ambience, monsters, weapons. what an incredibly well made piece of content. ive straight up seen people call Arcane Dimensions their "favorite quake game" and i get why, despite that not technically being correct.
Level design looks top notch but why is it that few mods know how to handle or add new weapons? Vanilla Quake weapons alone are sparse as hell. Satisfying, sure, but they need more variety. And this mod? The only new weapon I saw was the other shotgun. Oh look, guys. It's a shotgun but it's got... FOUR barrels now. >_> And then they nerfed all the shotguns and nerfed the RL and probably the GL, which overall, makes the already bullet-spongy enemies of Quake even more annoying to fight.
Thank you for covering AD. I genuinely consider it a masterpiece. If nothing else it certainly shows up a lot of modern game releases for the soulless corridor shooters they are. This mod deserves as much attention as it can get.
One of my favourite things about this mod is that all the new sounds included are downsampled to fit the original Quake sample rate :) Great review, as always.
I'm so glad you got around to playing AD. For me, it's the pinnacle of fan love for a game. It takes all the best elements of Quake, turns them up to 11 and it's free! It shows up the AAA games industry to be the money-grabbing-safe-betting-suits they really are. Profit chasing gets you Battlefront 2 and community gets you AD. I know where I hope the future of gaming lies. :)

Arcane Dimensions is FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Whoever made it is a hero in my owns lmao. It's literally a rebirth of Quake 1 and honestly better than most FPS's today. TOtally worth playing, whether you have or haven't played the original quakes.
OH HELL YES ARCANE DIMENSIONS. SPREAD THE WORD, BROTHER. I was more of a DooM than Quake fan before playing Arcane Dimensions but man, this isn't just a good Quake mod, it's good gaming period.
You should see how it looks in the latest v1.8 release now! Its even better and an unbelievably awesome achievement. The level creator's involved in the project are true artists.

I think AD also modifies Ogres to aim vertically so they're a lot more of a threat than in vanilla Quake. also if you want really annoying monsters there's also Quoth, it has the Flying Polyp which is basically a Spawn that flies and can disappear and go through walls, it has a projectile attack that fucks you up really badly.
does anyone know if there's a way to add the Projectile Shotguns from Arcane Dimensions mod into the regular Quake maps? for me they enhance so much the gameplay feel, so good lol
same! I just played through all the episodes of vanilla quake again. I still own my original Quake Disc and Mission Packs 1 and 2. I even found another copy of q1 at a thrift store and bought it without question.
I rather the Stroggs be the villains in their own game rather than a sequel to Quake. Its kind of like if DOOM 2 wasnt a continuation with the Demons from Hell attacking and focused on something completely different like fighting a Robot uprising or something like this was in a different universe.
I love how the pump shotgun's gunshot sound has a bit of the original Doom's sound hidden in it as a little nod, but it's beyond jarring to hear poison headcrab sounds in Quake, though.

This mod looks nuts; definitely something to check out. EDIT: After playing a single level (the snowy temple one) I can safely say that if this is the level of quality I can expect throughout the entire experience, this is the best mod I've played in a very, very long time.

I gave Arcane Dimensions a first try a few months ago, really enjoyed it. Making the shotguns projectile-based instead of hitscan adds a whole new level of challenge to using them, and the WIdowmaker is awesome. The level design is superb, the new monsters are fun and interesting, and it's just a really solid mod.
Talking about favorite levels, Tears of the False God might have been the best FPS map I’ve ever played. 1000+ monsters, two boss fights, one of which is secret that throws you into a complete slaughter, and amazing level design that makes sure to repopulate areas constantly so when your scouring the map it never feels boring. I’m actually not entirely sure that it doesn’t just infinitely spawn enemies throughout the map. This mod was my first time playing Quake and it’s absolutely incredible.
i'll be checking this out next week during my week off...thanks for highlighting it...spent so many precious hours as a kid playing Quake...can't wait to get stuck into it again. Imagine if Bethesda did a new single player Quake just like they did with Doom....WOW!!!
Probably should point out that this mod relies on the QuakeSpasm source port rather heavily, it claims to support other ports like Darkplaces but after trying that myself I think you are better off using the QS port. It seems this mod was built with that in mind.
I would absolutely LOVE one of these on Quake Team Fortress . . . I feel like I'm the only one who remembers it all people ever talk about are Team Fortress Classic and TF2 X/ . Keep up the good work your channel is awesome man!
If you think this is hard, you should check out Nehahra. It's a really advanced mod, and really difficult. The enemies are modified to strafe and shoot very quickly, and the vores are modified to attack you from standing on the ceiling. Besides the difficulty, it's still a pretty impressive Quake mod. Arcane Dimensions feels like it was designed with a similar spirit as Nehahra.
I remember your comments on Dusk Shaka12 ;) , and aye. Mixing the Q1 engine main games together with ye olde baked lighting in gorgeous Gothic maps is some chew-able tasty eye-candy.

HOWEVER, in DOOM 2, if you want my Blood to Boil and REALLY want to make me hate Lost Souls, introduce as Lost Soul Spawner in the form of the Pain Elemental, then congratulations, my ass is NUCLEAR RED. I HAAAAAAATE Pain Elementals more than people hate Archviles, and I find Archviles easy to take down.
little hint for painelementals: they onlyspawn lost souls when they can see you. So in some situations you can just take your time when you have cover, instead of rushing them in hopes they won't spawn as much,
last time I played Arcane Dimensions it was 2019 and I remember Quakespasm running it very well in my old 2009 dual core laptop... no slowdowns at all, no issue, game ran fine... Quakespasm 2019 version 👍

Holy crap i love these arcane, middle age looking environments, this certainly kept me interested. As a big Half Life 1 mod fan and looking at the bad mods for that game that take part in this environment, this makes it look really good. That's also why I loved Thief Gold, these old dungeons and temples, Cathedrals and old buildings are really nice.

Q1 and Hexen 2, doesn't get enough modding love - there was a good one for H2 a few months ago with new enemies. Nice to see a Harvey Birdman fan btw.

the shotgun projectiles is a feature from 1.5 release this year just before the sepulcher map and you can turn it off if you so desire.
