Chun-Li's move set was changed because it was a prequel e.g. she doesn't have spinning bird kick because "she hadn't mastered that move yet", so instead you get that spinning uppercut kick. and kikoken is pulled off the same way as hadouken instead of "hold back and then press forward and punch". and it's the small things like that that make me awesome with chun-li in the alpha series and completely suck with her on SF3 & 4
This is an amazing game IMO - remember being quite shocked when it came out in the arcades "A NEW STREETFIGHTER?!?" Got into it straight away and love to this day - that Q-Sound was great, new chunky cartoony look, reversals, the characters fit well too (all being ex SF/SF2/Final Fight).. The PS2 collection is good to get hold of - all 3 games, plus Alpha 2 Gold and Gem Fighters as a bonus! Plus it plays in 60hz regardless of region. Get it!
I know that playing videogames with commentary between two friends is very common now, but I'D LOVE SEEING A MARK AND DEREK LET'S PLAY. That Super Color Volley X encounter was pretty sweet, same with the multiple fighting games that Mark have reviewed in the past. MAKE IT HAPPEN! :D
I had this on Japanese import back then. It was awesome. The Saturn rocked hard! So under rated! Also the pad was so much better for beat'em ups than the Playstations was.
The reason why SF2 was such an amazing game is bc the learning curve was off the charts. You didn't just master the game or beat it. The depth of the mastery was unbelievable especially if you lived in NYC where kids would spend hours after hours playing each other.
To be honest, the ultimate Street Fighter Alpha experience on the Saturn is the third installment which used the 4mb ram expansion cartridge to make it pretty much arcade perfect.
Although most people remember the Sega Saturn for 2D games, I kind of wish you could review some more 3D Saturn games just to show how the Saturn was really better at 2D games than 3D games.
The Saturn was somehow 'the' console for fighting games, Capcom probably made a nice chunk during that run, becasue everyone knew if you wanted 2d sprite fighting games, you got a Saturn. Sadly, it's chipset didn't allow for certain things, like phase thru( ala Castlevania SotN), so it had it's weaknesses. If it was stronger, maybe SEGA would still be here..that, and not drop a console on retailers out of no where and offseason, Saturn was launched in like early summer, I think w/o warning.
That is weird. I was planning on defeating Montezuma in Civ 4 with a friend tonight. Wishing I still had my Saturn with me right now though. Could use some Panzer love.
Yes, look it up on Wikipedia. The Saturn nearly always wins over the PS1 when it comes to 2D, sprite-based games. The Saturn's Street Fighter Zero (Alpha) 3 is even superior to the Dreamcast version, in that the expanded RAM allows the game to be pixel perfect. The DC version added some 3D effects to cover up its shortcomings. So, I bought only the Saturn version of SF Alpha (Zero) 3.
Everybody loves the Saturn and has great things to say about a great system. Sega have you got the message from fans..... Make and release the Dreamcast/Saturn 2 for gods sake!!
*shows character select screen* Me: Wow that looks a lot like Street Fighter Alpha. "Street Fighter Zero is more commonly known as Street Fighter Alpha in the West." Me: Oh...
Yes, it is a good feature, but I don't think it would be enough to save it. If you read a little about the Sega history, for example the book The Rise and Fall of Sega, you will understand that there were lots of reasons why the Dreamcast failed.
I think after Champion Edition Capcom started crapping up the games with too much "crazy" and really difficult AI and the Alpha games didn't get any better. Street Fighter 4 was the game that I think got the "crazy" right but kept the game balanced and beatable.
I agree the PS1 version is very good. What makes the Saturn version superior is simply the Saturn's controller. Questionably the greatest pad ever for 2d gaming.
Yeah fair enough everyone has differnt opinons when it comes to the subtletys of street fighter as to why each versions the best :) Vega as your main? As is claw Vega that jumps around alot( charcters were renamed in differnt regions but that who I know as Vega) thats pretty intresting I dont know how to do anything particularly well with Vega :P Do you have SF4 for PS3?
I've heard that one the technical side it was hard to program for. Which may explain why a lot of cross-platform games always look worse on the Saturn.
I don't think the Saturn is really 'underrated'... nobody has ever said anything bad about the console except how Sega handled its release. It was 'undersold', if anything, but that was the marketing's fault... not the wonderful Saturn's.
Alpha had Vega which is my main, but on the other hand got really annoying with all the extra characters. 3, I just don't like any of the characters in it. Yeah, being younger I got into SF2 well after everybody in my family stopped playing it (though they were pros at it). I felt 4 went back to the basics but had the right amount of spectacle and balance. Still looking to get the 3DS version of that.
These spin off games were hit and miss for me. I think SFIV has the best of the best when it comes to Street Fighter characters, with only one real omission - Rolento!

"I suck at fighting games"
"All I ever do is mash buttons anyway"
(*insert smug-face*)

Street Fighter Zero, great Street Fighter taste, no sugar.
Mark, please teach Derek volume control... The guy is louder than Sindel from Mortal Kombat.
lol.
I check CGR like 40 times a day looking for a video update... when it comes im sooo happy :D...
thanks marks for my daily game dosis :D
I also produced an alternate music patch for that game as well. You'll be Street Fighting with iconic 90's cartoon themes when you do.
Nice to see the coliseum backdrop with the cats used from the Bruce Lee film, The Way Of The Dragon

Agreed, I preferred the most recent prior intro logo myself.
DAT INTRO!
With the squirrel and everything. Thanks for listening, Mark :D
I love that sound. It's like cleaning your ears with a SONIC BOOM!
Hey, Mark? Did you know that there was a Sega Saturn version of Street Fighter Zero 3?
Dude, awesome videos! These are taking me back to Nostalgia-Ville. Funny commentary, great production value, thumbs up!
i love your reviews. you sold me demons souls a few years ago.
Awesome I would love to get my hands on a Saturn Console soon.
Your know what I mean, the whole dreamcast, Saturn presentation of what games came on the systems. A new console from sega would be great.
Mark, have you ever considered becoming a voice actor? That intro was glorious.
Gotta love Chun-Li's Alpha/Zero look!
The squirrel is back, WITH BEER ? Best fucking intro ever.
Yea, he mentioned in the video that Alpha is what it's called in the west. I think Zero is what it's called in Japan.
Although most people remember the Sega Saturn for 2D games, I kind of wish you could review some more 3D Saturn games just to show how the Saturn was really better at 2D games than 3D games.
That intro was perfect
Tthe intro of the 2010-2011 season was the best
Good review keep them coming please! Some turbo grafix 16 would be BOSS!
just bought it on the PSN and now playing it on my PSP a really good game :)
Mark, you need to review Ehrgiez.
I bloody love this game! Please review Alpha 2 as well :D oh and Alpha 3 is great on the saturn you'd love that!!

Thank you. Can we watch the video now?
It's high pitch Derek
Can someone telle whats up withbthat video in the intro of CGR videos? Whats the story behind it?

I used to have this game. :(
Awesome. Best SF of all time!
Mark should do a review of the Japanese "spokesman" for the Sega Saturn - Segata Sanshiro
You can get Street Fighter anywhere, but its ALWAYS better on the Saturn!!
Every 2d fighting games are better on saturn !!
I liked it a lot, personally, like an improvement
Hooray for the squirrel, now with 20% more awesome (I mean, beer)
I agree. And Panzer Dragoon should have one week all to itself.
Best intro. Perfect.
Looks great arcade perfect I have it on the ps2 on the street fighter antholagy disc
I have fond memories of playing my PSOne version of the game.
Everybody loves the Saturn and has great things to say about a great system. Sega have you got the message from fans..... Make and release the Dreamcast/Saturn 2 for gods sake!!
"see i just mash buttons right here" haha made my day : ) I have it ^_^ on the sf alpha anthology : )
the street fighter zero(alpha) series is before street fighter 2 im talking about the story of street fighter
Holy shit! I never knew you could fight in the Colosseum where Bruce Lee fought Chuck Norris! It Fei Long even in the game?
my favorite youtube channel ever!
fine thanks for asking
The Capcom Play System 2 hardware?
It has a Saturday already.
You are right
I'm obsessed with your voice!
think you were referring to the sega cd or 32x. not the saturn.
Derek is such a humble man =)
This was my first Saturn game :) epic times.
Seems like the Nintendo fan is hating having to bask in the glory of a SEGA console!
Derek seems like a cool dude!
YES. Yes it is.
You know there's an American version of this game also on Saturn right?
superiorgamedude yes he owns one
He brought back the squirrel :D
Sega Saturn needs a "Saturn Month", not a mere week :)
*shows character select screen*
Me: Wow that looks a lot like Street Fighter Alpha.

Classic games and a classic tv seems to make more sense.
I think after Champion Edition Capcom started crapping up the games with too much "crazy" and really difficult AI and the Alpha games didn't get any better.
Street Fighter 4 was the game that I think got the "crazy" right but kept the game balanced and beatable.
Hey cgr, have you reviewed all of the myst games yet???
still have this
Hi CGR have you played predator concrete jungle if so could you do a review thanks.
Big back Ebaysibly! and Stella the Wonder Dog!
... And now that I've actually seen the review, how is everybody tonight?
que grandes juegos de peleas dio la Saturn la verdad
This is Classic Game Room. This is Videogame history. Take notes children!
I agree the PS1 version is very good. What makes the Saturn version superior is simply the Saturn's controller. Questionably the greatest pad ever for 2d gaming.

Geez how many versions of SF 2 Mark review?!
dude Zero 3 on the Saturn is like 99% arcade accurate . ITS THE BEST!
HIGH PITCH DEREK
I've heard that one the technical side it was hard to program for. Which may explain why a lot of cross-platform games always look worse on the Saturn.
Sodom isn't using swords?! :o
This was my first Saturn Game :)
Amazing game, the PS1 version was balls by comparison.
well yea but its a seperate console you cant connect a sega cd thing to it can you? its a seperate "handheld/console"
I think he meant that the Sega Saturn wasn't a big commercial success. Not the game. =X
This game was a huge success! What are you talking about???
that thumbnail makes me look good
Every one of your Videos is a good one.
I don't think the Saturn is really 'underrated'... nobody has ever said anything bad about the console except how Sega handled its release. It was 'undersold', if anything, but that was the marketing's fault... not the wonderful Saturn's.
Memories :(
The console was under appreciated in the West
i think he refers to the sega saturn
This game bears an uncanny resemblance to Darkstalkers.
Alpha had Vega which is my main, but on the other hand got really annoying with all the extra characters. 3, I just don't like any of the characters in it.
Yeah, being younger I got into SF2 well after everybody in my family stopped playing it (though they were pros at it).

How do you lose with guy?
Those school girls were so impressed.
Adon's my main in SSFIV
Yay the squriell is back.
Why would Frank get rid of all these games? He donated Mark's 32X too.
These spin off games were hit and miss for me. I think SFIV has the best of the best when it comes to Street Fighter characters, with only one real omission - Rolento!
