    Hi James, question for you on in ear monitors for bass player, I play in 2 piece and we use mp3 tracks, and edit out bass so I play live bass. Do you think in ear monitors are necessary with this set up?

    • @ebassguitar
      @ebassguitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They’re not necessary… but could help. Especially if you’re playing very loudly… quiet stuff should be fine

      You’ll need to buy some sort of headphone amplifier...

    Hello I tried watching your video but a lot of it went over my head. What do you recommend I do?
    I play at my church. We just started using in ears ( not sure which brand ). I think shure. Anyway we are eliminating all instruments amplifiers and stage monitors. I am not happy with the bass sound coming through the in ears. I run a Active Jerzy Drozd bass wirelessly into house. Only pedal I use is volume. Person said they also didn’t hear any bass in the house mix either. But that is a separate problem that will be hard to fix unless we have a better sound person. Thanks for reading this 🙂

    • @ebassguitar
      @ebassguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The critical thing is the sound of a bass in headphones is quite different. That takes time to get used to... so you need to figure out if there’s a tone issue or you’re just need to spend the time getting used to that sound...
      Hope that helps :-)

      Do you think I should invest in a 2 speaker style in ear set?

    • @ebassguitar
      @ebassguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The more suited the headphones are for bass response the better the experience you’re likely to get as bass player. Mine are triple driver

      I know this is a year late, but I wanted to respond to your question if you didn't find a good solution as of yet. At my church, they added what's called a Buttkicker, and it completely changes the dynamic of playing live there. What it is, is a small transducer that you can attach to different mediums to produce a vibration that's tied to the subs. So, for ours, we have about a 4ft x 5ft platform that's about 2" tall that I stand on (I think they might have built it), with the buttkicker bolted to the back. It allows me to really feel the vibrations of what I'm playing, along with the kick drum. The drummer has one under his seat as well, and so we both always get a smile when we have it turned up a bit and I hit a low D on my B string and it shakes us both to our core. It makes you feel like the sound system is much larger than it actually may be. They're not crazy expensive (you can get them for under $200), though I don't know how much it costs for the amp to run it effectively. Just make sure you do your research on the amp, because I know we blew one when we used an underpowered one, and my brother that runs audio at his church, I believe, also did the same thing. Hope that helps!

    What's the name/model of the IEM's you use ?

  • @Doctor__M

    Hi James, I'm in the process of working out all the equipment we'll need to convert my reggae band onto IEMs. I've discovered that there are quite a few headphone amps with two inputs: a mic 'thru' input, and a line input, so that the user can adjust the level of their own mic versus a monitor mix supplied from the desk. Do you know if you can get headphone amps with a DI 'thru', so that a bassist could pass his instrument output through the headphone amp and also receive a full band monitor mix, and adjust the two inputs independently? Thanks.

    • @ebassguitar
      @ebassguitar  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not sure… the best way to do it in my view is mic everything, use a small digital mixer, then send an independent monitor mix to each musician…

    • @Doctor__M
      @Doctor__M 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ebassguitar yeah, that would be ideal, but our band's current desk doesn't have enough auxes. However, with the kind of headphone amp I'm talking about you do get an extra level of flexibility as you can adjust your own level in your IEMs without having to go back over to the desk

      @@Doctor__M Got it, that makes sense. It sounds like you're exploring some practical options for your setup. I wish you the best of luck with your band's transition and hope it enhances your performances. If you ever have more questions or need further advice, feel free to reach out.

    At around 6:46, tip 3 you mention dynamic range and frequency in the same sentence but they are completely independent aspects of one’s sound or timbre and sounds in general. Dynamic range specifically refers to the amplitude of the sound waves, as in how loud or quiet those sounds are. Obviously, the volume of a sound/note has nothing whatsoever to do with the frequency of said sound/note.
    I’m just mentioning this as your site and lessons are specifically aimed at beginning and intermediate bass players and as such what you said is somewhat analogous to a photographer saying that their camera has great dynamic range in a particular colour range. Once again, dynamic range refers to the difference between the lightest and darkest tones the camera can capture but has nothing to do with any particular colour or range of colours.
    So, I’m not trying to be a dick about this but as an educator, you should be careful to use not only correct terminology but also that what you’re saying actually makes sense and is logical and consistent. I come from a physics background and am also a photographer and musician, two forms of art which very often make extensive use of dynamic range.
    The following is nothing to do with you or your lessons but far too many people who are trying to learn something which takes quite some time to master (as opposed to, say, learning a new word or the name of a new colleague), must be conscious and cognisant of the fact that practice doesn’t, and never has made perfect. Only perfect practice will ever make perfect. Something practiced incorrectly or the wrong way for 15 hours per day, every day of one’s life, and all that’ll be accomplished is being perfectly wrong.
    Just my 2c worth.😊👍
