Very handy video! I currently use a bass amp, and we often play small venues where I don't even go through the PA. But the whole band is looking to get in ear monitors and a mixer - instead of monitor speakers.

I prefer playing through a bass amp and with stage monitors on small stages because of the feel i have onstage and hear the respond of the public. Also it is still possible to communicate with your band members. On greater stages in ear monitors work very well as long as you can mix the bass with all other instruments and vocals to create your own mix. But i love playing live with a back line and floor monitors.

Is it possible to use monitors and still hear my amps tone without having to have a convoluted MXR setup?
Edit: I just want to be able to hear my bass whilst playing with friends in the garage. I can’t hear over the drums and just want to know where I’m at so I can catch myself if I’m messing up. I also don’t want to blow up the house or my amp if I turn it up too loud.

    Amp, the feel is crucial.
I use both for our live gigs, rehearsals I’ll often go minimal. By that I mean I’ll go from my guitar to a powered DI box into the mixer and just keep it lower and use our 15” PA’s without a subwoofer. What can I say, I’m the sound guy so I can get away with it for low key rehearsals.

Hi Jaz...once again, a very useful video. Thanks.
However, one thing I find frustrating (perhaps even annoying) is that the mic placement hides your mouth. This will be an issue for many people. I have noticed that, with increasing age, I tend to lip read much of the time. Any chance you could review the mic position please?
    Love your stuff! Cheers.

Great suggestion Mike thanks for letting me know I’ll bare that in mind for future videos 😊

Bass amp every time, 500W. Began my musicianship on the 70ties and there were no in ear monitors then. Back up second bass guitar.
