The fact alone that the RAM is soldered to the board in many new Synology boxes did let me choose a 918+ over the 920+ when i had the chance to get the 918 relativly cheap. I absolutely cannot understand why Synology chose to do that instead of going the traditional way by using 2 Dim Slots. I hate the soldered RAM shit when used in Notebooks already, even though i can partly understand it when used in Notebooks, but come on, nobody needs that shit in NAS Boxes.
If the blog I've read today wasn't mistaken there is another point here about "software is better for the older devices". Today Synology launched DSM 7.0 preview and a bunch of the newer devices (1520,920,720,420 and more) are not supported for this preview. I'm sure they will get the upgrade everntually but they are so new that they won't even offer a preview of the next OS version. Consider that as well.
Just purchased both a DS220+ and DS920+ (opted to return the 2-bay for the 4-bay) mainly because I actually couldn’t find any older models for much cheaper in the US. In fact, I mostly found the DS918+ available for MORE $$ than the DS920+
Great video, but how far can we go back in time? So if someone looking for a basic home NAS for back up and maybe create a personal cloud DS216 or even DS211? Thanks
Someone was selling a used Synology ds212+ for $40. I was really considering buying it but figured it's just too old, not enough ram/cpu to handle modern needs, no less something like a plex server imo.
Good question! Short answer, NO definitely not. Long answer, NOOOOOOOOO! To be frank, I'm fairly certain they HATE these particular videos. If it was published AFTER a leak, but long before a new product release - that is something they would approve of I'm sure. But after release? Nah. Most brands hate comparisons between 'new' and 'old', post new product release.. harms new unit sales (thereby harming the R&D budget that a new device has already cost) and draws the eye to areas where it appears they didn't innovate further on a new generation. Also, this isn't hypothetical. It was something a brand marketing manager practically yelled at me last year in Taiwan (not Synology, to be fair)... Ultimately, they are not big fans of any of the comparisons on here... Damn shame really...
Im looking for the 1819+ currently because I need 10gb and Dual Nvme Support with that new extension card without occupying extra drive bays. I want to make as few as possible compromises on speed but still consider the noise level and form factor, so I can't go larger that that. Utltimately I want this machine to replace my local harddrives on 2 PCs but for the OS one of course. Since one of them is used for Video Editing and pretty large files I need all the reserved that I can get.
Actually, today Synology started the DSM 7.0 preview and it's the newer devices like DS1520+ and DS920+ that are not getting the preview. I would think all "recent" models (~3-5 years of release) will get the upgraded OS. Just a guess from a noob though.
Good information again. Thank you for making these videos.

I did some looking around and saw the same thing, where the DS918+ cost a few dollars then the FS929+
Great video as usual, I wish they added a pcie to ds1520+

Love the vids...Good info... but is Synology giving you a back hander to plug the older versions??

Will the older Synology devices like the DS918+ still be able to run the new software that will be released closer to the end of the year?

I advice buy the latest synology nas, for me the biggest investment is on the HDDs, often cost more than the NAS
