  • Homelite chainsaw won't start. I bought some new parts to try and get it running again. Working out in the garage!

When testing for a spark, doesn’t the metal part of the plug need to be in contact with the engine block?

I bought a 38cc Homelite. It won't start either, in spite of replacing the carburetor. The problem is in the muffler, they stuff too much steel wires in the buffer. I drill holes on the buffer and remove all the wires. It now runs.

The spark plug has to be grounded by having the tip have contact with the piston cover

How did you determine that there is or is not spark? The spark plug metal body has to touch the metal on the engine block as you crank, not out away from the engine. Try a different spark plug or insert a screw driver into the plug cap and see if the spark Jumps to the engine block when held close as the gap of the spark plug. The on off switch wires to it does not matter which wire goes to which post. If you do not have spark after a correct determination then go to the kill switch and remove the wires. If you then have spark the switch is bad if you do not have spark then go to the magneto and remove the ground wire that goes to the switch. If you then get spark there is a ground out in the wiring to the kill switch. If you still have no spark then check the magneto. Remove it and make certain there is no rust/corrosion on its mount. Put it back on with 20 thou clearance. If sparks you done, if not get a magneto
