  • Hope this video helps you when you need to clean and lube your motorcycle chain. This is an updated version 2 with help and good feedback from the awesome very experienced guys below. Thank you, guys, very much!
@dennisgibb7958 - Recommending WD40 to save money. Also recommends cleaning the front sprocket area for each chain cleaning. Makes good since!
"You don’t need to buy the expensive cleaners. Wd-40, contact cleaner, even brake cleaner (careful on which you buy, some are like industrial solvent)
No WD-40 WILL NOT damage anything, it was designed to remove water and protect billion dollar nuclear missiles, use a soft tooth brush to scrub if needed, wipe the chain, if you want, use the contact or parts cleaner to make it dry, use a high quality chain lube, 3 levels, spray on the top of the roller at you sprocket, then the inside and outside o ring tracks, roll it through about 20-30 full rotations, then wipe of the chain.
Gotta clean the dirt collection hole first, otherwise the grit and grime just melt back onto the chain."
On the rollers on the inside first, then left and right on the link plates as you roll the chain through
Then, on the rear sprocket, lube the rollers top side, then do the left and right link plates. Roll in through 20-30 times ensuring the lube is even. Grab your rag and let the chain drag on it to absorb any excess. Clean up and ride. The red dust in the countershaft hole is rust from the sprocket and chain, caused by water and improper lubing.
STOP using that brush. The bristles are too hard for O-ring chains. Use a soft or child’s toothbrush if you need to scrub. For most street bikes the scrubbing is not needed, an application of WD will dissolve the grime, a rag will pick up the crud suspended by the WD, then you use a contact cleaner to flush it all out while rubbing with a rag. No need for expensive cleaners, hell vinegar and dawn dish soap are good enough, and cheaper. Remember, you are not lubing the chain, you are lubing the contact surfaces and rollers. The O-ring holds grease inside the pins that the rollers ride on. Do your lubing/cleaning and adjustments like I described, and you just might never need replacements. My chain has been on my R1 since 2016 and even sat for 5 years, no kinks, no stiffness, nothing. Only thinking of replacing it all because the newer chains are new tech with more strength and less weight.
(The cool thing about WD as you cleaner is that you can wipe off any overspray with ease. )
The chain lube you have is one of the best. A real cleaning involves chain removal and soaking. This is just maintenance cleaning.
@BlackArroToons - Highly recommending WD40. Used for over 20 years!
"I used to use chain lube spray on the motorcycle chain but found it was making the chain rigid and not flexible, and tried another can, same thing. Then tried WD40 and have been using that exclusively ever since 2005.
My last Ninja 250R I got in 2008 and traded it in 36,000+ miles later with the factory installed chain. That's also from refusing to wheelie though, but WD40 keeps my chain flexible and clean after every single ride back home into the garage.
The Ninja 650 is a faster bike, but hopefully this chain will last 36000+ miles too. I almost never needed to adjust my chain due to not wheeling. On my first Ninja 250R, I wheelied and had to tighten it often and eventually replace it after only 14,000 miles."
@KROWARIZONA - Let me know I did not remove my address from the cardboard box. LOL!!! It won't be the last time I have screwed up!
"Nice tips. I’d just remove the home address from the cardboard before making a video lol "

3rd time is a charm as they say. ;) Good tips and you got the chain nicely cleaned there. WD40 is my favorite for the chain after every ride.

LOL that was painful. This one will stay. I will probably become a WD40 man once this Motul lube is used up.

      Man,
You are still using that o ring destroying brush. You don’t need a brush in all reality.
You also have not adapted your lube section to what the real way of ensuring proper application.
Oh well, you can lead a horse to water……
