While the original is among my favorite B-52's songs (and favorite songs ever in general), I didn't really expect much from this cover, but was pleasantly surprised - Sinead did a really good job here, she gave it a different 'feel' than the original, while still being loyal enough to the spirit of the original lyrics and music. Great cover :)

A voice both pure and haunting. Like a person singing in church and yet like a long dead banshee wailing across the heath! Dumbasses had a meltdown when she tore up that photo of the pope on TV in the 90's. She was just ahead of the curve; now the corruption and abuse within the church is common knowledge. The world owes Sinead an apology or at least a reappraisal but I've got a sinking feeling she's not gonna get it. Now that we're on digital format, I wish this album was available on mp3. Until then, I'll keep coming back this video to get my occasional fix of this song.
I was listening to the B-52s 'Nude on the Moon' & thought I would look up the lyrics & saw it listed as a Sinead O'connor song & figured someone made a boo boo & was getting ready to submit correction but figured I better check first and HERE IT IS! The funny thing is, I always used to think of Cindy Wilson when listening to Sinead's MANDINKA especially near the end of the song-the final lead vocal ('I doooooooooo mandinka'). Of course Sinead no longer appears to use that strong vocal style that resembled Cindy. Kind of like Bjork used to shout piercing vocal tones then changed to more of a whisper. Great Cover.
Sinead O'Connor's cover here surpasses the awesome B52s original, just like her "Nothing Compares 2 U" bests the Prince original. Weird to say, as B52s and Prince are possibly my two favorite artists of all time.
This is great but Cindy's voice on the original must be one of the most stand out female vocals of all time. Only my opinion though. The B-52s are like a form of therapy to me.

"Mandinka" has some kind of angry "Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland" vibe.
